Lots of PHP additions to the code were written by Pyonta-kun (the upload mechanism, dedication icons, skiplist etc). That's not to say it's Pyonta-kun's fault since SAM is a rickety construction even out of the box.

Personally, if I knew programming I'd use something more sensible, like Ruby on Rails for the web + backend with mpd for playbackpiped to icecast.

Apparently, we have different definitions of 'working fine' then (I had seen enough borked tags on my fb2k-tagged uploads during several months before the box mobo died). >Skip Silence and Advanced Limiter

Skip silence is pretty useless.

Advanced limiter is only needed in conjunction with other DSPs to prevent clipping introduced by them, and it's positioned at the end of the chain. The waveform coming out of the decoder is already limited to 0dB FS and cannot be "unclipped", while FB2K's DSPs operate at 32bit floating point and during the process of converting the bitdepth to the soundcard's format, clipping may be introduced.

No DSPs, no processing, MP3 V0 or V2.

>really THAT weeaboo

Yes.

>what made you not go with this?

We (as in Pyonta who's actually in charge of the stream)'re not interest in going with "anything", but suffice to say it's too different from the current features in the stream (mostly the uploading that's not free-for-all, and no request icons) and also has a boatload of dependencies.

I'm personally interested in alternatives and before even proposing a switch to Pyonta I'll be testing it extensively in a virtualized environment (BOX runs Windows and that cannot change).

I'm not sure how well-supported mpd is on Windows, and haven't tested the cgi scripts themselves on Windows at all.

>boatload of dependencies

That's pretty much par for the course for scripting languages; mine, too would require you to install Perl and make a bunch of cpan invocations to install modules.

Though, if Pyonta's actually interested in using something besides SAM I've been looking for some kind of project to keep busy with. Long ago, I was considering scrapping most of the current version and rewriting it in Go as Perl was starting to get on my nerves, but I didn't really have any reason to follow through before. Go would compile to a single executable with dependencies baked in, for the most part.

Originally I was looking at hosting the current version myself while the actual radio was down, but got paranoid about finding safe hosting for it. It's mostly for fun, so I wouldn't be heartbroken if he turned it down after it reached a working state if I were to reimplement it.

>> No.8886860

>>8886835
>Perl

I was ready to make a joke about it but then decided against.

Anyway, there are not even any talks about replacing SAM, even if it is a pain in the butt, mostly because it has grown semi-organically and we're kinda used to its quirks (but then it's still a piece of shit that locks a dual-core CPU on track-changes and doesn't support UTF-8 extensively).

Anyway, take it easy and if you feel like it these threads will (hopefully) be around.

Well, that's disappointing. Anyhow, here's a link to the current state of what I had written, bugs and all (just the one, mainly):

https://code.google.com/p/jpsr-perl/source/browse/

I never really meant it for anyone else's use so It still has a bunch of hard-coded Unix paths and all the dependencies mentioned earlier, and so it's not really worth the effort to set up on your own yet for testing. Though, as I said, If I need a break from what I'm working on at the moment I'll consider re-writing it more portably in a (cleaner) compiled language for my own amusement and let you know in one of these threads when it's finished.

>No real need for a complicated framework.
I think they're neither complicated nor overkill for the task. Django's admin module gives you a lot out of the box. See screenshot for the result of 2 minutes' worth of work. I can see the whole manual adding/deleting of songs and icons, and the reporting functionally all done in this thing.

I was actually thinking of starting an alternative to the stream software this weekend, but I might not if someone else is up to the task. I actually have things to do.

SAM (and the rest) does need to be replaced though. Anything that chokes on UTF8 in 2012 is garbage. Crashing every hour doesn't help, either. There's also no reason why Pyonta-kun has to be Purveyor of Music. I'm thankful for his getting the thing started, but there's no reason why someone else can't host it.

If you are not as stupid as the average person on the street, you would realise the concept of "it's better to have distorted audio than audio you can't even hear".

Of course, this concept implies you know not to abuse it the function. I'm sorry you can't trust your intelligence level to do so.
