It's a spaced repetition program. Basically it shows you digital flashcards from decks that online losers compile. Every time you see a card, you rate how well you remember it. Based on that, an algorithm determines how soon you'll see that card again. You generally do a review once per day.

How do you guys get the on'yomi down (if there is more than 1-2 kun'yomi, I usually skip those readings)? I mean, there are so many on'yomi readings that are the same, especially something like し. I'm already mixing myself up on a few kanji on'yomi.

Do you guys study mnemonics, or just brute force it? I found mnemonics do help but I don't think I can do it for 2000 Kanji straight. KanjiDamage's mnemonics are too.. lewd? And they also mix me up after a while. Mnemonics even slow me down because I have think for a few seconds about the mnemonic itself before I remember.

I create my own cards, based on information from Genki, if that helps. (meaning on question side, everything else on answer side)

I tend to memorise readings according to how much I see them used in everyday speech. Talking to Japanese people and watching a lot of Japanese TV helps with this.

I do still have trouble with a few words though, the silliest and most basic of which is 中 which for some reason I just can't get myself to automatically recognise as anything other than "naka" regardless of the context. This makes me hate myself a little.

Okie dokie. I don't use mnemonics at all anyway. I should make a deck for vocab though, since I only end up studying how to recognize a Kanji and it's on'yomi and some ku'nyomi and skip other information I note.

But, damn, there are so many exceptions to remember. Most recent one that is kicking my ass is paper, 紙. So many exceptions for a bunch of words with that in it. Only 和紙 and かみ seem to follow the rules.

>>8859145
I don't have anyone to speak, nor do I really want to. Odd you mention that though, I'm fairly grounded that 中 has なか and ちゅう. So far any words I've come across with 中 I can guess the pronunciation of it, so I love this Kanji.

I learned a couple of the (English) vocabulary decks. I'm a native English speaker, but I wanted to make my writing more interesting. It helped quite a bit, actually.

Spaced repetition is apparently the best method of learning that psychology boffins have come up with. It lends itself well to learning jargon and vocabulary, so I think using it to learn French or German words would be a good idea.

Coon, coon, black baboon
Brutal, worthless, thieving goon
Often high, thrives in jail
His welfare check is in the mail
Some 40 offspring have been had
But none will ever call him dad
And yet he hollars, day and night:
"I blame the white man for my plight.
He spreads his trash around my shack,
It's him who makes me smoke this crack
He pushed my kind to burn and loot
And sends the po-lice that we shoot
But inch by inch we're taking hold,
Like when the white bread starts to mold
We'll overrun your homes and soon
They'll only be fit for the black baboon"

Beginner: Cannot learn Japanese without English. Starts out knowing no Japanese and ends with the ability to use Japanese as a language.

Intermediate: Doesn't need English, but doesn't know enough Japanese to be self-sufficient in Japanese. Starts knowing only how to have simple conversations and ends with ability to learn Japanese like you learn your language your whole life. Universities often call intermediate "advanced".

Advanced: Knows Japanese, but speaks it as a second language speaker would and cannot express things in Japanese in an impressive way. Their Japanese sounds unnatural. Starts out not sounding very intelligent in Japanese and gets better. This never ends for anyone who speaks any language.

>This never ends for anyone who speaks any language.
What.
I mean yeah of course you'll always pick up new words and find new ways to express yourself, if only because the language will change over time, but surely once you know 5000+ kanji and you're more eloquent than most native speakers you can just say "fuck it, I'm done learning Japanese"? Unless you want to be a PhD. in Japanese or Japanese literature, in Japan.
I really hope you're not implying that a non-native speaker can never achieve native-level fluency because that's certainly false.

Tae Kim's. I downloaded the most popular one and completed it months ago. I've been getting all the cards right but there's always cards for me to review everyday.

>> No.8868185

>>8868126
There is no "native level fluency". There is only advanced. People learn things about their language for their whole life. What you mean is when you don't think about your language learning. You could still sound/write like and listen/read like an ignorant even if you think you've learned the entire (living) language.

>> No.8868265

>>8868146
Well, simple texts are great if you want to pick up stuff like particles or a general feel of the language. More importantly, the sooner you start learning the most common jukugo the better.
Knowing 当 and 然 is well and good but if you don't know 当然 it's not going to help much.
If you learn through kanji damage or one of the core vocabulary anki decks you're probably learning some jukugo already, but it's definitely better to see them in varied contexts.

If your grammar is very basic you're not going to read a serious novel anyway, so it's kind of a waste to wait until you've learnt 2000 kanji just to read some children's stories. Which are probably all in kana anyway.

Really there's zero reason not to start learning grammar and read shitty texts as soon as you start learning kanji.
If nothing else it's kana reading practice.

I learn at least 5 jukugo of that day's new kanji and I have the most used ones down. I don't keep track of my overall vocabulary so I can't attach a number to it.

So, do you know of a good place that has low level books that has a decent amount of kanji? From the way your putting I didn't let my knowledge of the language grow naturally.

>> No.8868310

>>8868185
Even if you sound like someone who dropped out of high school, you wouldn't be ignorant of the language per se. You'd have an excellent grasp on the popular manner of speaking and you could express yourself like a proper white trash slob, with the appropriate mispronunciations and grammatical flaws expected of someone of your social standing. You would thus be perfectly fluent in that tongue.

The biggest problem people who learn languages academically tend to have is that they can't express themselves casually enough, or basically don't say what native-speakers expect them to say, so their speech sounds inappropriate. Once you can express yourself in a manner that native speakers find natural for you, you can consider yourself perfectly fluent in the language.
The only reason to keep going past that point is academic or professional considerations.

>there's zero reason not to start learning grammar and read shitty texts as soon as you start learning kanji

Yes, there is a reason. Not everyone is motivated enough to read shitty texts. I, for one, can only keep up practicing if what I'm reading is interesting to me in the first place.

>Sure, but two times out of three*, knowing kanji X and kanji Y is, in fact, going to help you understand the word XY.
It's going to help you remember the meaning of word XY and how it's written, sure.
Deducing XY from X+Y doesn't work well if you care at all about the precise meaning though.
Basically knowing the kanji isn't at all a substitute for having a real vocabulary, but it's a tool for building one.

You probably want to leave the core vocabulary deck for later, because it a) has example sentences showing how the word is used in context, which requires some grammar knowledge to appreciate and b) IT USES KANJI, and in my experience you're going to run into unknown kanji in your vocab deck pretty often.

But it's still feasible. It's just smarter to grind kanji for at least a month before.
