I play the guitar (I'm very limitited though).

If you don't want to be limited then learn musical theory around the guitar (google it)

Also, the best way to learn is having friends that play it and/or seeing tutorial videos on youtube.
And you can too try to play the songs you like, just make sure you are at the right tempo. Tabs(or power tabs) can help you play the right notes or tunning.
