No such thing. I can understand people thinking they have problems, which is usually why you go to the doctor to get checked. But that's what a diagnosis is: when someone diagnoses you. Saying you're a "self-diagnosed [disorder]" is just obnoxious.

I had been attending a child psychiatrist for depression and anxiety, then I grew up and they stopped caring about me, but my parents were worried so I went to see my GP. He referred me to someone who I think is a social worker, and she referred me to another psychiatrist. We had a talk and he suggested I might have Asperger syndrome, so I was then referred to an autism specialist. We met and she asked me some questions and we had a talk, then a few days later I received a letter saying I had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.

IF I DON'T THINK ANYTHING IS WRONG, THEN OBVIOUSLY I WONT ASK SUCH QUESTIONS IN THE FIRST PLACE! That first step to diagnosis is to actually do some fucking research yourself. Do you think people with cancer get diagnosed all of a sudden. No, they get sick and then go to the doctor for further testing. THAT MEANS IF I READ THE WIKI, AND SHOW THE SYMPTOMS, I SHOULD PROBABLY DO FURTHER TESTING.

This has been debated for decades, but you really do need a professional to do it for you. Go download a copy of the DSM or ICD. Read the criteria. If you take it as gospel, you will have most of the anxiety disorders, one or two of the dissociative disorders, a few of the sexual and gender identity disorders (which includes paraphilias), and at least half a dozen mood and personality disorders. In fact, most people would have at least ten mental disorders. But this obviously isn't the case, and professionals know this, which is why there is a lot of research and testing outside of the canonical lists of criteria themselves.

To be fair, the most common autism quiz (the Autism Spectrum Quotient) is actually grounded in real research and is sometimes used as a diagnostic tool. You can easily find it online[1] and it often serves as a good precursor to a proper diagnosis. Of course it's not a diagnosis in and of itself; getting a high score doesn't mean you definitely have an autism spectrum disorder.

Then you should consider it might not be Asperger's. The characteristics may have "clicked" for you, but you should widen your horizon a bit. Everyone on /jp/ probably thinks (or has thought) they have, say, dysthymia or bipolar disorder, but it doesn't mean they do (but they could have something similar).

Check some other "social" disorders, like social anxiety disorder. And forgive my stereotyping here, but being bad at socializing doesn't necessarily mean you have a disorder. I see too many fucking people who are shit with people so they decide they have autism.

The human mind can be pretty fucked up, or to say, there are more outliers than regulars. I don't even consider most "mental disorders" actual issues, I consider them personality traits - it's only an actual issue if there's neurological causes behind it, if it's just psychological, it just means your learned thinking patterns are less likely to result in "normal" behavior. In general, most humans suck at it, the world is full of magical thinkers (which don't understand logic and instead only think by association) to full-blown delusionals (see most of today's religions; although I don't mind /jp/'s delusions, they're quite cute and if brings people enjoyment, why not?).
Nature "designed" a rather general piece of thinking machinery and it's not hard for it to vary much between individuals and groups. Some ways of thinking will work better for certain tasks, others not so much, some will result in different internal states and so on. There is no "perfect" way to go about this, there are no objective goals or drives which should be maintained no matter what. If you are in some way, that is 'you', that is your personality and you should either keep it if you want, or change yourself if that's what you want. Most psychological disorders that have no neurological basis are merely personality traits taken to the extreme and all that means is that you're not a "standard" human mind, but then nobody is, some people are just closer to this average, but nobody is exactly that perfect average.

You can actually get diagnosed in one session, depending on your circumstances. In fact diagnosticians use their own "quizzes", for example here in the UK we use a test called the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO). The key thing about a proper diagnosis however is that you are a real person and the diagnostician can adapt and understand based around you and your answers. Your parents/siblings are usually brought in to answer some questions about your childhood and relationships. It can be quite involved.

Before anyone asks: no, I have no idea how "Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders" abbreviates to "DISCO".

>I don't even consider most "mental disorders" actual issues, I consider them personality traits - it's only an actual issue if there's neurological causes behind it,
But that's where issues spring up and where there has, again, been a lot of debate by people much smarter than myself. However you need to realize that disorders are just that--disorders (think about the word and its etymology). There's no magic thing that makes something a disorder. I'm sure diseases and other physical illnesses have carefully defined criteria that makes them what they are. It's the same with mental disorders, though it's all "in your head" (but if you want to argue that there can be physical causes/symptoms or that the brain is ultimately a physical entity to begin with, there's that too).
One of the big recurring criteria in DSM is that the problem severely limits or damages your everyday life in some way, or over a long period of time. All people get upset, but it doesn't mean they have major depressive disorder. Everyone has mood swings, but it doesn't mean they're bipolar. There's no one-or-off "schizophrenic gland" in the brain that can tell us whether a person is schizophrenic, but we know schizophrenia exists because we've identified and defined it. We're ultimately the ones responsible for deciding what a mental disorder actually is, and although it's kind of scary and a bit overly bureaucratic, people usually get it right.

That just means that if a personality trait can be harmful to themselves or others, it could be considered a disorder, although some of the disorders that I've read about don't quite fit that definition exactly.

One could go on listing cognitive biases all day long and conclude that those biases will eventually lead to incorrect decisions and thus eventual harm to self or others. The thing is, pretty much all humans commit these errors all the time - our thinking is quite flawed because our cognitive architecture is very general and malleable (both our strong and our weak point). Yet, we don't consider people commiting these errors mentally ill as such issues are the norm for everyone, while those that commit much less errors are very rare. The whole mental illness thing seems to be quite artificial and just tailored to apply to some class of errors that a group of experts decided on, in reality, almost all human thinking is sub-optimal and wrong in many ways. Instead of just admitting that we are flawed (and should improve, if we want to), we're just discriminating on only a small class of identified flaws and considering the rest as "fine" or "normal".

>> No.8787147

>>8787122
Of course it's all artificial. That's sort of the paradigm shift you need to have.

Anyway, the problem is when these errors you speak of are recurrent or severe. Yes we have all these crazy social norms and in some alternate universe everyone is depressed 24/7 so being happy means you're mentally ill, but for the most part we can actually identify and define what it means to have a disorder. Depression/melancholia for instance is a good one, because it goes back millennia and we can identify it in other animals in different environments. There's clearly something up there, so we slap a handy label on it, decide some loose boundaries and call it a day.
I think it'll always be in flux though. We'll never have a finished "model" of the vast spectrum of mental disorders, especially not one we can all agree on. It will be in beta forever. Big changes have happened (homosexuality, for instance) and are happening right now (DSM-5 is released next year, and it has a lot of changes). The biggest issues are that we'll never be able to have solid cut-off points for what is "normal" or not, or for what "matters".

In a way, there's no problem with classifying such disorders or traits. The problem appears in cases where treatment can be forced on someone or other legal issues involved - the way society reacts to them, usually not realizing that not all things that are outside the average are bad, or that society itself does not have any single person that perfectly fits that average. It gets even messier when a person might not be considered fit to judge if they have the right to accept or refuse treatment.

Another thing that's important is better understanding of causes and mechanisms that result in some disorders instead of merely lumping various different things that have very different internal states and causes into the same disorder.

When I was a teen my psych asked me to take a test for assburgers. I was very scared of what being diagnosed with it would mean so I did not answer "strongly agree" for anything even if I really did. Even after doing this, I was only 10 points away from being on the autism spectrum. The test looks similar like the online ones and asks the same kind of questions.

>the DSM-IV even explicitly prohibits a co-diagnosis of ADHD and an autism spectrum disorder, though a few traits can be similar (particularly in children).

Though again, it's possible that you were misdiagnosed. A lot of autistic children can be quite hyperactive, and most autistic people in general have weird obsessions and strong compulsions. However it doesn't mean they have ADHD or OCD.
It's tempting for any socially awkward person to look at a list of symptoms and say, "Oh my god that FITS ME PERFECTLY!" but really you have social anxiety or are just bad at talking to people. Look up some other common traits of Asperger's that aren't required diagnostics. Things like mind-blindness and hand flapping. Those are often strong indicators.

If I was you I would look into it, but do consider you might actually just have ADHD and OCD.

Really though, "self-diagnosis" is bullshit, but if you read Wikipedia and think, "Hey this might be me!" then do some more research. Read support websites and perhaps the DSM. If you're still worried, go talk to your doctor.
But remember that disorders are disorders. Plenty of people are shy. Just about everyone in the world has been nervous around people. However it isn't until it becomes pervasive or recurring that it becomes something like social anxiety disorder or avoidant personality disorder. Personality disorders and mood disorders are the worst for this. "Mood" != "mood disorder" and "personality" != "personality disorder". Remember that, /jp/.

>Have any of you been tested for asperger's or autism? If so, when (how old were you) and how is it done.

>Self diagnosed for aspergers here.

I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at the age of 24.

This is how to get a diagnosis:

Call whoever doctor you visit for check-ups and the like. Ask them to recommend you a psychologist. They will do so.

Call said psychologist and schedule an evaluation. Keep you medical insurance information on hand (should you have insurance).

Go to your scheduled evaluation. The psychologist may forward you to a testing facility.

Take assigned test at testing facility. It takes a while, so don't have any other commitments.

Take results from test back to psychologist. Psychologist will then explain the results back to you. At some point the psychologist will say, "yep, you sure are Autistic/Aspergan/ADD/fucking nuts."

You'll be given paper work saying that you have been proven nuts by a genuine doctor. Xerox these papers like twenty times and keep them safe.

You can skip some of these steps if you know what you're doing, but if you don't (and you don't) I recommend you go through all of them.

At some point you might be asked to see a psychiatrist, and said psychiatrist may proscribe medication if you're interested. Be interested. No pill is gonna cure all your ills, but you'll be surprised how much they help.

(optional step): post a picture of Kohaku holding a syringe.

>> No.8793099

But, this assumes that you already have a high chance of having the conditions behind that diagnosis in the first place.

What if you would wish to obtain a certain diagnosis, but are not entirely sure if you are eligible for one? If you fail to be diagnosed, are you still capable of being re-diagnosed with that same mental condition?

>> No.8793154

>>8793099
That's what the psychologists evaluation is.

After speaking with you for a while, they'll tell you what they think your problem(s) is/are. You can mention what problems you think you have and they'll tell you how likely it is you have that as well.

Don't be afraid to bring up anything at all with your psychologist. They are literally paid to listen.
