Revival thread #4
Copied from the last OP:

about GoS
/jp/ has discussed this game before, a rather long, difficult touhou rpg, translated. Awhile ago it received some updates that greatly improved stability and performance, the game was rather crashy with the English patch before these patches, so it's worth updating.

The whole game prepatched with the translation and game manual (5 parts)
http://www.mediafire.com/?a8c1by6btaid7

If you already have the game it's most likely at version 2.06. You can get the 2.07 and 2.08 patches here: http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/game02/update.html
and the 2.09 patch here http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/update.html
After updating to 2.09 the game task bar will still read 2.08 for some reason.
The english files to copy over for 2.09 http://www.mediafire.com/?hwfe9kaur3d08c3
If you updated your game you'll need to run the exe in your save folder to convert your saved games to work with the new engine.

I don't see why it wouldn't be, really. If anyone wants to talk about Labyrinth or any other doujin Touhou RPG they should be welcome as well, but I guess the focus of these threads is mainly on the Ichigo Bose games.

Probably Tentacle, sitting at 75 power/550 magnification. Not that I understand the damage formula or the skill damage specifics, but that's the biggest number I saw on the page about skills on the Japanese wiki. Vacuum Wave seems pretty strong as well, with 80 power/300 magnification and ignoring defense.

Hell if I know. I just redownloaded the whole thing; patching doujin games never works out for me.

That Aya strategy from the last thread works fairly well; I can get through the first two stages consistently. Last stage is pretty damn tough, though. A lot can go wrong very quickly. I was certainly not expecting it to use the sister's spellcards, and if Sanae dies I'm pretty fucked. I got her down to 50%-60% on the first try though, so I should probably be able to do this.
I also completely forgot about Youmu's new last word. Is it good? It just looks like Slash of Eternity with a longer cooldown. Is it more accurate or something?

I don't think Skydance would work out to well on that boss. All that AoE...

That was a perfectly buffed Youmu for the most part. She had Doujigiri, rage choker 4, strength ring 3, ribbon, demon shield, and master fencer's clothes. She was level 67-70, don't remember exactly, in Asura mode, and was buffed with dark sword, PATK buff, and amplifying scroll.

Also Hinotori Skydance only reduces physical defense I think, but I'm not exactly sure. I'm the one who wrote that long strategy near the end of the previous thread and the magic attacks honestly didn't bother me much. There are a lot of AoEs, but my party had a lot of magical defense.

Also, going with a skill that is shorter cooldown can be nice compared to a more powerful one with a longer cooldown, but when the skill with a shorter cooldown procs double attack, it's not much of a difference. When a skill with a longer cooldown and a lot more power activates it however, it can mean a world of difference.

Her level went up fast compared to the rest of my party due to her being pretty much necessary to beat some mobs consistently in the Gorgon Barrier.

Due to this Alice, Mokou, Youmu, Byakuren, Sanae and Aya were relatively more leveled than the rest of my party being in the 65-70 range while everybody else was in the 60-65 range due to me using them more when grinding.

I ended up grinding a lot before my first serious try at the final boss. Which kind of made it feel a bit disappointing when I beat the final boss the very first time I got to her second and third phase.

>> No.8785463

>>8785400
It should be fine as long as you've got the right skills. I probably overleveled considered I beat the last phase first try, I think I was trying to farm every normal mob drop, but gave up when I cleared the Gorgon Barrier 100% free of monsters twice and didn't get a high ribbon even after like 50 mecha dragons. Also didn't manage to get a plasma knife either. I ended up getting both of them after beating the final boss in just a couple of fights strangely enough. I was level 50-55 by the time I beat Lithos so I'm pretty sure I did way more leveling than I needed to since I ended up with everyone being at least 10 levels higher than they were.

As long as your Youmu gets a double hit proc while using Paschal when buffed then the last phase should go down pretty easily.

>> No.8785563

...apparently that consistency I mentioned was a lucky break. Ugh.

Is there any pattern to Minus in the second stage? Like...they cast it every X turns?
Stage 1 takes awhile and is pretty iffy with the summons and whatever Lithos manages to do, not to mention that luck needed to dodge everything and for people to actually target Aya. I really don't need bad Minuses killing me after all that when I haven't even gotten to the final form yet.

>> No.8785879

>>8785563
There's no real pattern I think, however there's really only one chance for her to hit you with it assuming optimal circumstances.

First turn: Have Mokou use a spare Fujiyama if she has one, your first party should still be fairly alive assuming the first phase went off without a hitch. Also have Aya reset her EVA field one last time.
Second turn: Switch parties and use little legion. If Alice gets minused, simply revive her.
Third turn: the sisters chant, simply hourai doll or revive Alice here depending on if Minus happened or not.
Fourth Turn: Alice can either little legion or survived, if she can't then use Nitori's Optical Camouflage.
Fifth Turn: If Alice did survive and used little legion the previous turn, then simply Optical Camouflage here.
Sixth Turn: Another chant. Now would be a good time for Patchy to set land to neutral.
Seventh Turn: If you've been doing enough damage you should be able to kill the second phase on this turn. Save Alice's bomb if you think you can. However she can still little legion on this turn if need be.
Eighth Turn: The second phase should be dead already. But if isn't, it's most likely near dead. If you little legioned the previous turn then your only option is to use Nitori's commander spell again if you think you can't kill it this turn either.
Ninth Turn: Kill it already.

Assuming the optimal situation, minus only has a chance to hit your party and not Alice during the 4th or 5th turn assuming you can kill the second phase before it acts during the 8th turn. However remember you can use optical camouflage with Nitori to give your party perfect dodge.

Also for the first phase, my Satori also had leaf shield so she was able to plug up holes in the starlight barrier on the off chance a party member got hit. However that's only really needed to keep the frailer members alive like Aya, Marisa, and Satori herself.

There are some enemies, who can, apparently, inflict stop. Any way to get through that level without running away? (They'd attack once anyway, and it would need way too much luck to actually run away)
Sanae's RES buff doesn't do anything. And her buff-tree is maxed and she wears the best IND+ item I actually have.
It's kind of stupid how this game spikes so heavily with its difficulty. And more than a few times it actually features way too hard and annoying random encounters. The bosses are all fun, but the way to them.. not so much.

shit, you are excluding running away? No fair Anon!

Sonic Stream/Illusionary Dominance + NUKE NUKE NUKE. Forget about buffing, just use your strongest sweeping abilities and run to the circle to reload bombs. Also, your Alice should have Little Legion by that point, she can take the heat...
Also, if you're feeling paranoid about surprise attacks, max out Aya's Air War tree. Pic related.

>> No.8787484

>>8787438

I'm excluding running away because it wouldn't work. Like I said, those fairy thingies would attack first anyway, and that would most likely mean immediate death.

Also, there is no circle for reloading bombs.. except you split your party again and go to the respective warp again. Which sucks. Although it's at least possible. (Do enemies reset if you change stages, but not the dungeon?)

Anyway, luckily I never had problems with those enemies of your picture, although I never encountered that many. But I have quick enough elemental AoE attackers, so those 100hp a pice thingies would probably go down quickly enough. (Although they have some evasion.. and we all know how great theories work in this game)

>> No.8787488

>>8787484
hold on, what party split? You don't need to do that if you want to enter stage 10 through the warp in the entrance screen. I don't mean the circle inside stage 9, but elsewhere. You should run outside often anyway, risk of losing loot and all.

>> No.8787545

>>8787488

I know, but that does reset enemies. Which isn't exactly a good thing if some encounters simply kill you. If you backup a save next to a magic circle, there's no risk in losing anything. Well at least not more than with leaving the dungeon.
Except you actually care about the lost pex/exp, which I don't. Grinding isn't that terrible if you have magic circles nearby. And usually it's best to fight at the very beginning of dungeons as well. Enemies there give good enough exp and die without giving too much trouble. The further you go in, the more problems come up.

Good example is that damn angel/demon combo, which can 1turn kill you, if the angel decides to do two of his hit-all light spell. But I guess that's part of the bad balancing in this game. Bosses are less of a threat than quite a few random encounters are. And that shouldn't happen. The RE encounter monsters might only have a fraction of a boss's hp, but some hit way harder.

>> No.8787575

>>8787545
only bad luck+poor preparation can kill you.

About the respawning, I've done everything: visited Kourin, Akyu, human village, the shrine, circles in dozens other shrines, none of these respawn enemies (by themselves). After all these hours, I still can't say what exactly makes enemies respawn. But yeah, just staying in the stage guarantees that there will be no respawns at all.

>> No.8787646

>>8787575

You don't even need bad luck. If a heavily buff specialized Sanae can't even prevent stop from some random encounter, then the problem is somewhere else. It immediately afflicted 2 out of 5 characters. I don't even want to know what happens without the RES buff. My RES isn't even that bad to begin with. (Well, not on everyone at least)

And some encounters have so strong monsters, they DO 1-turn kill you, except you blow several actually damaging last spells out. Which shouldn't happen.

I already gave an example, but "earth" in the garden of the sun (stage 8) is another good example. His earthquake HURTS. And he gets 2 actions per round, as far as I know. If you don't have him dead in at most two turns, you will be dead. And he has high hp, high defenses and only going really all out with very high mp-cost skills will kill him. It's not as bad as with the Angel/Demon combo in the same level, but.. if he actually has some decent allies you might as well reload, or pray you can run away somehow. Earth itself is quite slow.

>> No.8788257

>>8787646
you just need to become familiar with the enemies, that's all. This is true everywhere. Can't be seen as cheap difficulty in any game, if you ask me. Or do you rage at Koopatrols one-hitting Mario just because you didn't see their attack coming?

Even if you abuse the weakness of said Angel, you still need long to take it down. And if you don't abuse the weakness of earth you can say goodbye as well. Knowledge of enemy weaknesses is obviously important. And knowledge what they can do, and what to use for a counter.
But as soon as the counter isn't strong enough anymore, it's getting cheap. And that's what happens quite a bit. RES buff not helping against status ailments, weakness abusing being not enough to bring the enemy down "quick enough" and so on.

I don't mind if bosses can break through Sanae's Res Buff. But random encounters? Really? It's already a war of attrition, so counter-spells not even working anymore is just too much. It's similar to attack-spells which deal pitiful damage, even with hitting weaknesses. So I'm dealing 500damage with a single-target weakness hitting spell. That's not enough if there are 4 enemies with more than 1000hp each.

The shin megami tensei games actually show how random encounters should be. They are dangerous alright, but the right strategy kills them quickly. In GoS encounters always take several rounds if you don't blast through your bombs. And weakness abusing helps, but is not nearly devastating enough. It would also help if there'd be some more information about status inflicting. I found out that some enemies can be relatively easily paralyzed (with the stun axe skill I like to use). Would help to know such things, for some more strategy. Because status effects are actually way more devastating than weaknesses, except if it's an "X" one. (700% damage or something)

Res of my party is fine. Or at least I'm using the +20Res item I have. Can't really do more.
Team is: Mokou, Nitori, Aya, Marisa, Sanae.
Mokou for tanking and physical damage (axe), Aya has a good axe as well, Nitori and Marisa do the elemental stuff, Sanae buffing/healing.

The RES formation is probably not useful, given that it would give a bonus percentage. Also I don't even have one anyway.

>>8788442

I thought about the Reimu thing, but she is useless in that part, or at least pretty much. Also always using a bomb just to survive one turn would be.. not a good idea.
Alice is pretty much the same. Both she or Reimu would heavily reduce the damage my party could deal.

I'm seriously annoyed about Sanae's Res buff suddenly being so damn useless. NOTHING went past it so far. It might even be a bug. I'm fine if Reisen is able to berserk three of my characters, even with them having res+. It's a boss. AND her signature skill. (And all her "normal" status skills never worked) But some random encounter... weird as hell.

Might as well try just again and see if it happens a second time. People make mistakes, who knows, maybe I'm just a huge idiot and buffed PATK (or PDEF), or the game somehow screwed up.

if it's any consolation, later on characters gain strong enough skills which don't require bombs and still plow through enemies, like those heavy elemental attacks Patchouli gets somewhere in the 40s.

>So I'm dealing 500damage with a single-target weakness hitting spell. That's not enough if there are 4 enemies with more than 1000hp each.
what do you mean, one pathetic single-target spell? Obiously, Marisa can't just strut over and slap any monster's shit with a single Stardust. What did you expect? John Matrix badassery? Some guys have low M-DEF and fatal weaknesses, others have less of a weakness and rather of an... allergy. Those guys are which you unload your bombs upon. With team work. If your stuff works well, you won't "need long to take it down". No matter who it is. Yes, even those hordes of angels in stage 21 fall like ninepins as soon as the touhous with trascendent slayers enter the bowling alley. Perhaps it's just a matter of wrong equipment or level difference

I'm ranting too much. I RECOMMEND you (if you value your time and sanity) to disregard all thinking of damage/HP min maxing bullcrap, leave behind traditional "hit fire with water" thinking and resort to the really underhanded shit like Satori's Wail + Murder World, Byakuren 3-commander bomb, anything Lithos and Reisen do in the expansion etc.

It's just that it has a rather high chance to work - but even that is not much of a problem, because the moongirls aren't too fast, they're weak to Dark and they're pretty weak to being silenced. Know who has access to dark spells and can silence them with ease? Satori. Also, Mokou's silence fist, with 16 or 20 points in its growth tree, will shut them up about 80~90% of the time. If there are too many of them on screen at once, fire Satori's mass silence, Mokou's phoenix thing and you should get at least half of them that way.
By the way, Sanae's RES buff DOES help - it's pretty much the difference between having our entire team stopped or just one or two.

Given how much mp Marisa has and how much you have to fight, those 3mp spells are pretty much a must. Big spells for big enemies. Small ones instead of normal attacks. ~500damage isn't bad after all. (Thanks to the slayer effect against those moon rabbits and other stuff warrior/magicians in that dungeon)

I still think stuff weak to her element should at least almost die with one shot. You just don't have the mp to always cast the bigger damage version. (which already costs 12mp and my Marisa just started learning those. They aren't even that much more powerful.)
It's not fun to always run back and heal, and if the dungeon doesn't have an accessible healing circle, monsters even partially respawn.

Anyway, does someone know if weapon-effects actually trigger more often with higher IND? My Aya wields an axe with a death-effect.. which is pretty powerful. It actually triggers quite a bit. And she even has her piercing + hit-all physical attack which will also carry the death effect. It's nice if you fight 5 or so dragon maids and her hit-all instantly kills two of them.

You actually do, if you have crafted any of her brooms and put 20 points in her broom growth. Restoring 6 MP per turn? Oh god YES.
>Anyway, does someone know if weapon-effects actually trigger more often with higher IND?
Yes, as they have a set chance to trigger those effects, which is then affected by your IND.

To optimize this, have that character be knocked out until the final Amplifying Scroll has been cast and have Sakuya use her IND buff on the last few casts.

>>8791119
Also, you're just making things difficult for yourself, however every tree besides Mokou's, Nitori's, Sakuya's, and Youmu's are ignorable for the most part. They're the only ones with awesome weapon trees and their armors are also pretty great too besides for Mokou's. Notable weapons outside those trees are rainbow greaves(which you can substitute for two particular swords found in chests), Byakuren's IND scroll, and Aya's EVA Fan. Everything else is unnotable. Honestly My Marisa never had MP problems compared to other characters and I never used brooms. She always ran out of bombs first and when her power gets high enough her stardust spells are incredibly spammable and her MP is huge.

It's not really a matter of character specific materials. It's a matter of iron, rocks, and tiered material drops like those sunflower seeds.

Throughout my game I crafted Automatic, Carbine, Autocannon, Magnum Steel, Invincible Punch, One-Shot Glove, Stardust Fan, Arondight, Vyse Sword, Deva Scroll, Sugatta Scroll, Rainbow Greaves, Kashasetsu, Matsusei, Doujigiri, Philosopher's Robes, Improved Optical Camo, Elegant Maid Uniform, Fencer's Clothes, and Master Fencer's Clothes for character specific equipment.

The only character specific material I ran out of by the end were rusty blades. As long as you're thorough with chests you'll generally have character specific materials to spare. You'll very likely run out of tiered drops first.

During my playthrough I scoured every area and checked the JP wiki to find every chest. I was also a speedy player and got to the Gorgon Barrier by level 50 so I hadn't managed many lucky drops character specific material wise.

>>8791119
They're not as rare as you may think; you get around 10 of each from chests on a full playthrough. If you're worried, take a look at the wiki and plan how you could use them to make weapons and armor.
>>8791085
Nope, because buffing a stat that is already buffed doesn't do anything - unless you have a certain amount of points in her buff tree, and then a new buff will only overwrite the previous one.
>>8791258
>Guess she just can't cast hyper trigger on herself
She can, and it's amazing to inflict statues with a buffed Byakuren. I don't think your idea would work, though.
Something that could work would be getting the IND buff, then the scroll buff, and then using Sanae's Wind of Miracles (she learns that at level 70 or so) to strengthen buffs.

>> No.8791577

>>8791521

If buffs are replaced(!) it might work, if their duration is only refreshed, then not.

The reason is simple:
Step 1: Base IND -> IND+
Step 2: IND+ -> recast, thanks to higher IND -> IND++
Step 3: IND++ -> recast, again thanks to even higher IND -> IND+++

And so on. It doesn't work if only the duration is refreshed, or the old status is taken away internally before the calculation for the new status is carried out. However if the old buff applies to the new calculation and the new buff then replaces it, she would be capable of getting max IND that way. Probably.

Marisa's broom skills actually does very good damage, despite her how patk. If you consider that she does aoe damage with her broom skills and the fact that they drain mp and have huge regain, her broom skills usually does more damage than her single target magic skills.

Also character specific items are more common post game. They aren't super common, but you don't need to save up.

Patchy's melee skills are good too. If you never noticed, she has a ton of str growth and her melee skills lets her deal with things that are resistant or immune to elemental magic. Oh god, stage 11, boss fight. So damn close. Well, first time I instantly knew which element Marisa should prooobably use on nineball. Worked out well. Together with Reimu's "nu-uh, you ain't freezing shit". They even warned you when nineball wanted to freeze you again.

But after she was dead I was surprised that Marisa's fire-attacks still worked just as well on Momiji. And I was even more surprised that her Ele-spell was weaker than her fire spell. Should be the other way around with her wielding Bardiche. (No not an axe, which it should be. Raising Heart is fine, but Bardiche shouldn't be a staff) It supposedly amplifies electric damage by 20%. Makes no sense.
That said, the battle progressed and at some point Momiji decided to use some weird physical raping attack, which hits multiple characters a random amount of time. (I'd guess 1-2hits)
She killed of most of my characters (Reimu, Mokou and Marisa), at which point she was already pretty dead. So Youmu did one last attack, Sanae revived Marisa and then both of them died. Apparently another fireblast was barely enough. Couldn't have been any closer.

The boss-fights in this game are really nice. Good thing I won though. My Alice is a bit underleveled by now. (And Mokou as another heavy damage-source is very welcome, always)

Beat Momiji first, Cirno can't do anything alone if the fire land is high (and it should be, if you're spamming Patchoulis and Marisas). Their combo only works because frozen targets can't evade attacks, so Momiji's low-accuracy nuke will always hit frozen characters.

Nah, Alice is pretty much never really necessary. I'm already through a good deal of that part.
The only real problem are, like always, the "foreign god"-type enemies. I don't have any dark-magic on my team and while Reimu can use light attacks, they aren't that strong. I defeat them once and that's it.
A boss-setup would work better on them I guess. (i.e. I don't have Sanae's mdef buff equipped for random encounters, but I tend to take it with me against bosses. And Marisa is completely elemental, except that doesn't work in boss fights. And Reimu has a bit more offensive stuff on her, unlike in bossfights, where barriers and healing is more her job)

It works. Especially because I have a nice healing-circle which enables me to not needing to leave the dungeon ever. I can save there, heal up and monsters don't ever respawn. Isn't that nice. And should I ever get wiped out, I load my backup save. Though that doesn't really happen much. (maybe once every 10hours in very unlucky random encounters) I mostly use that backup system in case the game crashes. It once did and took the whole pc with it. (a weird graphic"bug" all over the screen, not just the game-window. )

Alice is by far the best tank in the game. You'll really want her later. As for the foreign gods, you'll want someone who can use hard hitting melee against them. They're not that hard at your level, but you'll need a team that can deal with them later. They drop good stuff.

I actually had that encounter. It wasn't too bad. Used Reimu's "nope, no physical damage" for Marisa (who promptly got focused down by those three things), and well. It worked out. One goes down with the 12mp single target ele spell from Marisa + a good whack from Mokou.
And Aya can luck out and instantly kill them as well. (Though it's relatively rare with those things)

Sure enough, Kanako seemed to not have a very lucky day either. That death-axe is so damn useful on Aya. Oh man. Big random encounter? 7mp+bomb hit-all -> something is most likely instantly killed. And now even a bossfight...
Suwako wasn't much of a problem either. Whenever I could I used Reimu's "you know, elemental stuff is overrated" barrier, which apparently completely shuts Suwako down for a turn, and hit her. Again and again.

Does anyone know of a good method to reset the random encounters in a given map?

>> No.8811981

Hard facts.. I don't think they exist. Except that nothing ever respawns if you don't go back to the worldmap.

The game probably just keeps only x monster groups "away", which will be refreshed every time you enter the worldmap.
So if you want to have ALL enemies in one dungeon, you have to get the "missing" enemies in a different dungeon. Though most dungeons are easily big enough for things to respawn without doing that I guess. Just leave every now and then.

That's nothign compared to FF4's Adamant Armor. Finding it requires you to find the Pink Puff randomly in a single room in the final dungeon, win the Pink Tail from it which drops very rarely (combined with the puff's rarity you have less than a 1/10000 chance to get it) and then trade it for the armor.

Now that's annoying.

I love how buffs actually do things in this game, to say the least.
The support systems in most modern RPGs are criminally useless. It's like they just put them in there "because an RPG must have buffs", and as they don't want to mess with the balance, they just put skills that give you +5% damage and shit like that.

I'm still not sure. I know that going in and out of dungeons adds to some counter related to the monster spawn rate, and that it's possible that some dungeons have higher spawn rates (stage 18, for example - monsters there respawn after you go out of the dungeon three or so times), but I don't really know if it's like that. I remember noticing how some monsters will almost always respawn just by going to the Hakurei shrine (or its healing circle), and that the guys at stage 21 are like that, but don't quote me on that... I need to test a bit more once I get there on this new save file.
>>8812297
That actually isn't that bad - the final dungeon scared the shit out of me the first time I got there, so my strategy consisted of escaping from every encounter, grabbing every chest in the dungeon and leaving it often to save those items. The problem is that escaping is harder there, too. Ugh.

The white kedamas give large amounts of power as long as they're in the same level range so you get 70-150 power each fight easy as well as some mats most of the time.

To reduce searching for them I simply save outside the dungeon and run in, through the warp into the latter part of the dungeon into that small area that's an S tetris block down in terms of direction from where the warps heads to. Not from the beginning, but it quickly becomes like that. Running also becomes quickly an important option. It's usually fair, with the exception of some very unlucky encounters. I'm a bit confused how shields work in this game.

They only activate when you actually use Defend in battle, right?
What's low/high activation?
What's pre-defend? (some formations have this)

>> No.8816760

>>8816662
Shields can activate when a character is struck by an attack. They wont activate if the character is casting a spell at the time, or prepping for using a staff, or a weapon that states it doesn't allow for shields.

The activation is the EVA stat of a shield, the shield only has this percent chance of activating for its listed attack elements. These are modified by the element resistance symbols. e.g the full circle ● is 50% resistance means that those marked elements have +50% to the shield's activation chance. (elements marked with no symbol use just the EVA)

Post and pre-defend are for if your character has done its move yet or not. Thus more pre-defend is better for slower parties since the foe will attack first, and post is better for faster parties since they'll take the enemie's attacks later.

>> No.8816804

>>8816760

Ah great, thanks for explaining!

So by default all characters are post-defend (they only defend after they made their attack)? And you have to put them into a pre-defend formation to change that?

And does the 'Defend' command just decrease the damage further?

>> No.8816863

>>8816804
Pre and post defend are their own special effect granted by various formations. They give a chance of the character taking only 50% of the damage if hit before or after their move, depending on post and pre of course. This is why there is a formation that reduces your party's speed, it also gives pre-defend.

The defend command is just a 'pass'. It lets characters who are using two handed weapons have a chance of their shield activating by not attacking/not casting.

It's always good to have shields on everyone because if you get hit by something that interrupts or stops your moves the shield can activate if they are just standing around doing nothing. Though you want your best sheilds on alice since she can cover others with her's and increase her activation rates.

How amazing it is to get two 1% Eyeballs from Minotaurs when I'm hunting the 5% Muscle Belt III.

By the way, all this silly cheating I've been doing during this replay taught me that you REALLY don't need to upgrade your weapons or armor whenever you can, if all they do is add a bit more of attack or something. Those extra few points don't mean shit, and actually most of the effects that change from one to another are pretty much unnoticeable as well... I believe the only ones that really change something are most of Sakuya's two-handed swords and Nitori's gun that can slay transcendents (so you can kill squids more easily).

Anyway, for anyone starting on this - this blabbering doesn't mean you should completely avoid making more character-specific gear either, since you get 10 of each material from chests in the main game, 2 more from chests in the expansion, and pretty much every monster has a tiny chance to drop a character-specific material, so by the end of it you will most likely find one or two. The basic materials have a somewhat okay chance to drop even without the drop patch, hovering around 5%, plenty of monsters drop them and you get around 10 of them from chests, so they aren't that much of a problem either. Remember that the wiki has pretty much all synthesis recipes for you, so you can plan what you want to make during your playthrough.

>> No.8820208

Adding to this, pretty much the only material-related grinding that can really help would be for Iron (as you need 30 of that for the Kusanagi and 25 for Sanae's second ultimate weapon) and Youkai Mt. Rocks (because pretty much every equipment you can craft with those is good).

Codes. Check out the touhou wiki. It will also tell you how to get Mokou and Byakuren earlier.
The special weapons from the vending machine actually make the forest of magic pretty easy.

Speaking of which, I'm now in the "pipe version". I don't like this. I guess I somehow try to get through that area to the healing circle end explore afterwards. And when I checked the wiki it even said it has easier monsters than the stage before. Hah, yeah right. So those skeletons are weak to earth, alright. Well shit that Patchy, the only real earth user, SUCKS. And let's not even start with Light/Darkness weaknesses. So Byakuren deals with her single target dark spell about 400damage if I'm lucky.. AND exploring the enemy's weakness. And they have about 2000hp.

Damnit, why is Marisa the only useful magic user? I mean Patchy, buffed by a relatively high IND Byakuren, deals about 1200damage with her dark 30mp bomb spell abusing weakness. And not buffed about 700damage. Marisa easily deals the 700damage with her 3mp not weakness hitting single target spell as well. It's actually quite a bit more. (unbuffed) Well, she has a slayer effect against these weapon wielding weak to dark enemies, but still.

Some balancing of this game is pretty weak. I guess I could give Patchy a staff instead of a dagger, but then she would be slow as fuck. (Marisa doesn't need a dagger for being quick) Same goes for Byakuren, who is obviously more of a supporter anyway.

They player and overworld sprites might be a little more derpy, but the enemy sprites, backgrounds and scenarios are a lot more beautiful. If I'm not mistaken, they were drawn by the sprite artist of GoS, so that isn't too surprising.
As for your other concern, what happened is that the whole game revolves around the shikigami system (basically three living accessories you can equip, which give you skills to use), so there's less focus on the playable characters and the things they can do. Pretty much the only thing related to them that was kept were the Last Words. Also, character-specific weapons are gone as well, and your characters learn new skills during battle, making the game a bit more like SaGa (I think) than its predecessor.

You can do very well with just the basic single-target elemental spells, like Fire Arrow and such. She only starts shining when you have enough power points to put 20 in her Learning tree and 13 or 16 in her Third Eye tree, for the +40% learn attack power and +30PATK/MATK respectively.
Also, if you want to use spells, she's much better with rods than with eyes.
>>8833360
I suggest getting any of Marisa's brooms for the sweet 6 MP/turn regen, at least. Seriously, you don't need to completely avoid crafting stuff just because the materials are rare; as long as you don't try try making every single equipment you should be fine.
Still, Patchy's books suck when compared to rods, at least in raw magical power.

For weapons, I believe they add 1 damage per point in skill level, and you can learn new skills during battle by attacking if you have a high enough level. Obviously, stronger skills can only be learnt if your level in that weapon is high enough for it. Elements just add 1 damage per level.

I know Rodonii did a lot of the enemy sprites, most likely all of them. All he usually does is enemy sprites in these games. I haven't played the game in a while to see if I notice any other people that did some of them.

I also noticed he had that crab girl up on his blog for an EX version of the game but it was just an April fools day joke.

It looks like an addon disk or something else might be coming soon because Strawberry Bose was asking for test players. They were also showing some of the shikigami sprites for the contest winners. They've been quiet for so long, it's nice to see them talking again.

Aren't Patchy's 8mp spells WAY too weak? Even her single target 12mp spells aren't that strong.

Actually, let's make a little comparison. (pic) Patchy is 7 levels under Marisa (37 vs 44), but both have the same "stat-growth" modifier. +5 INT.

The problem is obvious. Patchy needs a dagger (+three points in its tree for +20speed) AND an item to keep up with Marisa's speed. As a result she has a whopping 100Matk less. Or, in other words, Marisa has about 70% more Matk.
Both are similarly focused on dealing magic damage otherwise.

>> No.8835793

>>8835674
Is there a reason you're placing importance on speed?

It has little relevance in battles that last more than one turn DPS wise. And in battles that last only one turn then overall effectiveness of the party probably doesn't matter at that point.

Also, damage is more dependent on the percentage boosts in the various growth trees for the most part. Marisa also gets slayers for a few monster types as well.

Patchouli has land and field spells. The field spells are a boost that can't be obtained elsewhere and the additional damage that occurs from other characters would count towards her DPS. However using field spells for this purpose usually only occurs in boss fights.

Patchouli also has the benefit of being magically tanky, she's a wet piece of paper towards physical attacks though. However Marisa is a wet piece of paper to both magic and melee attacks.

One of Patchouli's more main advantages over Marisa is that she has all targeting spells that don't use bombs as well as light and dark spells.

She also has the option of being built physically as well. Her melee build is very strong early game though tapers off as your progress.

I never used her books, I always focused on either rods or axes and fully redistributed power points whenever I switched between the two.

I also never used Marisa's brooms either. The MP regain never seemed necessary.

Speed is important to get rid of one or more very dangerous foes very quickly. Before they even act, or after they acted one time.

Forest of Magic (Stage15) has a few enemies like that. For example the skeleton. Lots of resistances, weak to earth. Patchy, buffed by Byakuren, can't wipe that thing, not even close. I think that thing is vulnerable to blind though. Blind might not be reliable as damage, but it completely and effectively shuts that skeleton down. Otherwise it has STRONG physical attacks, strong enough to instantly wipe several characters. Having Alice doesn't do much either, as you can't waste a bomb every turn.
Normally that thing could be Patchy's job, but she can't really do it.

Or those staff wielding enemies, only weak to dark. They appear in a lot of stages, but now, in stage 15, they got hit-all spells which deal 100-150damage a piece. Their single target one deals a lot less. It might even be a bug or something.. because that makes no sense whatsoever. Anyway, you CAN'T let these things act. If Alice can't block their attacks, you are very quickly dead.
Not sure if silence works, but you CAN paralyze them.. although I don't think they have a weakness for that. They are simply not immune to it. Their Axe/Sword/Spear wielding companions are similar, although not quite as bad.

Speed is very helpful. You don't know how much Aya's instant kills saved my ass because she removed a few enemies before they could even act. (for example 5 elite mind flayers, she killed 2 immediately)

Freefight, Thunder Line or Poison Shield -> Marionette Parrar. Everyone is now alive.

>> No.8836475

>>8836403

No. Everyone is now dead, because Alice failed to block. It's a gamble. At least until I get a shield which has enough eva so that the 140% boost actually means 100% eva. (meaning: 42 or more eva) Ideally a shield which blocks everything like that, but that's probably only available veeeery late.

Does actually someone know the exact way Marionette Parrar works? I only know that with a shield excelling against ele, I can always block the first hit-all ele attack, but never the second. I'd assume it has something to do with the "number of activations" or something. But I also think something actually got blocked after a not blocked second hit-all thunder attack.
Maybe the "+6 activations" mean that you actually have 7 and a hit-all attack costs 5, meaning the next hit-all can't be blocked, because of not enough activations, but a single target one could? I just don't know. An ele-shield on Alice should definitely block everything ele-related with a 100% chance, so it's probably something with how Marionette Parrar works.

>> No.8836504

>>8836475
Actually, 25 points in the Manipulation growth doubles the EVA of shields, so anything with 30~40 defense is going to save you most of the time. Medium and large shields work the best for her, at least until you can make an Autobarrier or that other shield with 60 EVA. You also most likely have a few spare Pretty Mirrors in your inventory, so you could make a Platinum/Ruby/Diamond Shield for a cheap way to have a decent chance of blocking everything.

As for the other thing, I believe the activation counts for every character that blocked an attack. It's pretty evident on later dungeons where everything spams area attacks, MP is not going to be enough to keep everyone alive, so you should either use Spectrum Mystery or Little Legion.

>> No.8836583

>>8836504

Yeah, I do have those shields. Also about Parrar.. I'm already where it doesn't exactly do a lot, even if it would give me 100% block rate as long as it lasts.

Kind of makes Alice way less useful then she could be. Again, I can't waste bombs too much with her, as she'll never recover any. Well, at least not without a healing circle nearby and returning there every couple of battles.. which would be beyond annoying.

Little Legion is really awesome, but that's really more a boss-spell given its bomb cost. And Marionette Parrar is actually a pretty awesome skill if you just fight one enemy or maybe two. Provided they don't spam hit-all attacks too much of course. And they usually will do just that... and have multiple attacks per turn. Poor Alice.

Alice using her Marionette Parrar is a gamble. I can't use her wrong. Every now and then characters ARE hit. It just happens. And, interestingly, hit-all attacks hit mostly Byakuren, who is on place5, Alice is on place1.

Also, I still have no idea how exactly Marionette Parrar works. Had two melee-enemies, one with Spear and one with a Sword, use their columns-attacks in one turn, and both were completely blocked. That's 10blocks.
But two ele hit-all attacks were never blocked, the second one always hit.. and Alice had an ele-shield.
It's just weird.

Some attacks ignores shields or the dice roll wasn't friendly to you. Also her shields only blocks the things that they can block, ignoring the modifiers from circles and triangles. Bakyuran is most likely to get hit because there is a limited amount of times parr can work. This limit is consumed starting from slot 1 to slot 5. If someone uses an attack that hits everyone and you only have 4 uses left, than the one in slot 5 isn't protected. Try using those elemental shields that everyone can equip. Remember that they don't block all types of attacks. The fire shield for example won't block earth and elec.

Yeah, everything important for shields is learned (pic).
And formations.. I don't think I have anything which would be better. Ideal would be one with alice in front and everyone else in one row behind her, with lower chance of getting hit.
Although Alice does also profit from Marionette Parrar's +100% Eva.

As for luck against physical attacks.. not really. That stuff is always blocked by her, if she can still block. Spells are currently a bit worse, because the Diamond Shield has some Mali on that.
That said, the +40% evade on shields and +100% for Marionette Parrar do also work differently than it would look like at first. The diamond shield has 31 eva, so with a 140% boost it would be 74. That's far away from reality. It's most likely on 100. (With elements being on 75% chance because of a 25% malus. Would explain the always unlucky Byakuren getting hit every now and then. Give Satori as many IND accessories as you can, craft her Green Eyes, give her a Poison Lily too, Venom Rune Clothes, then make Byakuren's buffs as good as you can with her growths, max Satori's Trauma growth, put the rest of the points in her Eyes growth and just to make it sure, put Sakuya in the commander slot. After all, the only moments when bombs are needed in the first phase are when when Anastasis or Lithos use charge. By just having Marisa and Patchouli attacking them with the respective weakness (although it's almost useless against Lithos with her skyhigh MDEF) with some decent land level, they should be critting, doubling (with their skill trees) to ensure the end of the phase before you run out of resources.

First party:Aya, Mokou, Reimu, Satori, Marisa. Commander:Sakuya. Aya uses her field effect to increase evasion, and her bomb that increases evasion for a turn when Anastasis is on the field. Mokou uses Fujiyama Volcano on Biotopos and Lithos (same damage). Marisa uses her elemental attacks(no bombs) that need two turn of cooldown each use, and Double Spark if there's an annoying mini-boss on the field. Satori uses Starlight Barrier, Leaf Shield, Shield Wall, Area Heal and Refresh. Fire arrow for some extra damage. Finally, Reimu uses hyper amulet when she has nothing to do, and her no-physical damage barrier when Lithos or Anastasis use bomb reload.
Second Party:Alice tanks stuff, Youmu uses Slash of Eternity/Paschal Moon Reflecting Satellite Slash in Manussya Stance, Patchouli uses Silent Selene and Void Elemental to drain the land gauge, Sanae uses Wind of Swords, her buff buff, and heals and revives, Byakuren uses Amplifying Scroll and Dark Sword. Nitori uses camouflage as the commander. So far, I've never used this party because I've yet to reach the second phase.

I've just done some "testing".
Slash weapon on Mokou (such as Kusanagi): mediocre damage to all
Strike: only decent damage to Bio
Stab: mediocre to Bio, good to Ana and Lithos

I would recommend you to just take the Kusanagi and give it to whoever hurts the final boss in the other phases. It doesn't have Reptile Slayer, so it's actually not that overwhelming in the first phase...
Also, in my opinion Sakuya is sort of wasted in the commander spot. She can make good use of Kusanagi, too. Combine that with Private Square, and she can dick around a lot in the last two phases.

Yeah, I kept getting confused about what to do with Alice and Sakuya, since I wasn't sure if I needed a tank or not in the second phase or if I was going to blitz it. Alright, I'll follow your advice, so thanks a lot for all that!

By the way, the weapon Sakuya has equipped is Mambele, a fun little dagger. It has Reptile Slayer. Thanks to the higher stats, I found it more useful than the Claymore.
Mokou had dibs on Kusanagi, and Youmu has her katana...

Stage 26 had me by the fucking balls.
I was running out of MP with almost everyone, tons of picked up stuff on the way, Satori with two more spells in her head (do they get lost upon defeat?).... thanks GOODNESS I got to the end. Thanks Remilia and your 707 PATK.

>> No.8855245

I love you /jp/. Seriously. Thanks for all that, especially this >>8852890. And I somehow already had the Mambele, which was pretty helpful for the second part. I think this was the longest RPG battle I've ever done. Took me a full hour.
First phase was simple enough, with Alice guarding everything, Reimu healing when necessary and using barriers if a last word came up, Marisa and Patchouli using the elements and Satori healing, shielding and using Shadow Boom. Even managed to proc multiple last words, which was pretty helpful. The unexpected problem was when Patchouli ran out of MP. Suddenly, my damage output slowed to a crawl, because Satori soon followed and Marisa simply couldn't keep up. I was forced to switch in early but immediately got a Fujiyama Volcano off on Lithos. Next phase was pretty easy with Sakuya's time stop and messing around, but I rushed it and realized I completely forgot to use Dark Sword and Byakuren's buffs. And then the third phase...
I seriously messed this up. Did a few thousand damage, time stopped, and then ate a Void Cavitation after they absorbed Fire Land. No one died because of Reraise, but surviving two rounds in a row of Flash of Lightning+Flame was unusually hard. The most damage I did was 22000 with Mokou, and only once. By the end, Sakuya was out of bombs, Mokou was out of MP, Byakuren was dead and Sanae was on cooldown. And then Youmu pulled a multi-hit critical Slash of Eternity, and all was well in the world.

Not sure if it was worth it, but the game was fun outside of the last areas. Started it in back in September I think Sure took a while. Now, onwards to the expansion!

How do you guys use Mokou? I just got her up to my party's level but she seems weak. Had to slap a spear on her and even then, only regular attacks work well.

>> No.8860012

>>8859962

I use an Axe with her. Stun Blow or normal attacks for most random encounters, sometimes a bomb skill if it's needed.
Mokou is basically made for the Hinotori Skydance or the Hakurei Type formations. The baiting ones. You put her in the baiting slot. She can take more damage than most characters and does very well in that spot. Alice doesn't really like those formations because Marionette Parrar obviously doesn't work too well in them. Also, unlike Alice, Mokou can deal damage. A LOT. Her PATK can be insanely high. She has great strength and gets a very good attack-based growthtree.

She is basically the a tank which also has one of the best offensive capabilities. Which makes her kind of broken. My Mokou just learned Fujiyama Volcano. Well, yeah. Ouch. I think it deals more damage than Youmu's 2 bomb "Slash of Spring Wind in Saigyouji" Last Spell.

You don't need Alice for up to stage17 at least. That's where I'm now. You can use her, but don't have to.

I personally use Sanae as my "hard support" (with Mokou in the "bait" spot). It's her job to see the party through battles and let them win. And Sanae is usually a much safer bet than Alice is. Although there are stages in which Alice works quite well too.
Using both.. no. I don't like that at all. Two hard supports heavily cripple the damage output in random encounters.
The advantage of Sanae is that she can react to all kinds of situation. Alice can only reduce damage, but Sanae can also prevent status effects, raise Attack if you need to get rid of something FAST or raise ACC if there are some dangerous enemies with high EVA and high magic resistance. Also she can heal. Honestly, Sanae is enough for a lot of boss fights as well, you don't even need Alice. However, Sanae is awesome as a commander, especially if you like to beat things quickly. It's really insane damage, especially combined with Byakuren's buffs.

Alice.. she's good as well, but not in all stages. At least not without additional help from Sanae. There are some bosses which deal a ton of damage, especially later ones, those are true Alice moments. In this case you just use Mokou as a damage source.

I have been using alice the whole playthrough and have died only 3 times in a stage, of course I have died more times in bosses.
Alice has something that mokou doesn,t and it's her Decoy, that thing is only 5 mp, no bombs and makes all enemies 100% target alice, the only bad thing is it doesn't protect you from area attacks, but still you can use her together with Satori and cast Berserker on the whole enemy party. or you can have a glass cannon formation with character like patchouli and marisa in the backrow and sakuya and youmu on the front row to wipe the entire screen in the first turn.

> Youmu
> First turn
Sure.
You also want to keep a look at your MP. And Bombs.

>Decoy
Enemies can still hit other characters. I learned that the hard way. Also it's no priority move, so Alice needs to be FAST. Which she usually isn't. At all.

>Berserker
Yeah, do it the hard way. Really, more than enough enemies can be shut down completely with blind. Other ones don't like paralyze at all.

Alice is a hard support, like I already said, and Mokou is not. She is an Attacker. With the bonus of her ability to tank a good amount of damage.

Of course, using Alice is possible. It's just not needed in most cases and only makes battles take a longer time.
Sometimes it just comes down to preferences. Stage15 can be done with Alice or Sanae. But Stage14.. uh yeah. You want Sanae. And don't need Alice at all. You can still use her, but why? One more damage dealer makes things faster.

until the expansion, there is no real method for defeating enemy-san in the first turn other than burn mana/bombs like crazy. (Then you get Reisen, who justs needs to sneeze on the enemies with a 12 mp attack)

>> No.8862768

>>8860136

Sanae's main use is for damage buff and res/hit buff when you need it. She really doesn't fill in the same role as alice. Also alice can protect the team with little legion and marriontee parr or whatever it's called. The team's damage should be fine if everyone has aoe attacks.

Alice's true strength comes out when you put her in a poison shield formation. That formation was made for her.

>>8862752

Until endgame, most battles can be cleared in 1-2 turns even with alice. Without her, you're just hoping that no one hits one of your soft characters every turn.

>> No.8862812

>Until endgame, most battles can be cleared in 1-2 turns even with alice.

so throw in another damage dealer and most fights will only go more than one turn because the paralyzed monster(s) take another round or so to melee down or just to let the caster melee it for 5 turns and get mana back so you don't have to run all the way back to the circle.

>Without her, you're just hoping that no one hits one of your soft characters every turn.

Unless you forget to swap out a character's level 1 inventory when you put them in your party, nobody should get 1-shot even if they are somewhat underleveled, with some exceptions.

the small-armor wearing characters (Marisa, Patche, Satori, Cirno, Remilia) are almost always floored by a single Tentacle or similar attacks. And sometimes middle armor wearing 2hus like pic related get shat over by physical attacks, too. (Aya herself though is less vulnerable thanks to her tree bonuses)
The thread is approaching its end, somebody wanna make the next one?

>> No.8862837

>>8862757

With luck, Aya needs 7mp and a bomb. Had that happen a few times actually. And I don't use that spell unless there are at least 4 enemies.

>>8862768

Like I said, there is no need for Alice in most cases. Again, you CAN use her, but why? Especially if you need Sanae anyway. She is enough. She can easily buff pdef as well, which is the most important defensive stat in most cases anyway. And it doesn't need to trigger upon enemy attacks. (Marionette Parrar is potentially way better... if it triggers)
It's nice and all if you can still burn through enemies with Alice, but is another Attack that bad?

I mean I'm not saying "don't use Alice at all, use always Sanae instead". I mean it works, but it's really a matter of preference.
Sanae is versatile and can do a lot. (Buffing pdef, healing everyone, helping against status ailments, make characters not miss the enemy or hit them for more damage..)
Alice can reduce damage. With a bomb for sure, with Marionette Parrar.. if you are lucky. And don't get bombarded with too much AoE stuff. Though the AoE thing really shouldn't happen. You need to shut down some threats immediately, if you can't do that it's not Alice's fault. Sanae can't help there either.

>> No.8862843

>>8862812

Most fights will take 2 turns whether you like it or not. Mokou, even though she does more damage than alice, still doesn't do much. The fact that she lacks mp/bombs and an spamable aoe moves robs her of damage dealing capability and there's always the risk of one of your guys dying and not being able to fight.

>> No.8862855

>>8862837

You're either early in the game or have a selective memory. Sanae should be casting a magic or attack buff, not physical defense. Even with the physical defense buff, your characters don't take hits well.

>>You need to shut down some threats immediately, if you can't do that it's not Alice's fault. Sanae can't help there either.

No, alice can keep your team alive through heavy aoe if you're also aoe healing with reimu, or with little legion. She will also keep your team alive from hard single target hitters which pdef buff will not.

>> No.8862891

All my fights with alice goes the same way.
Are the enemies very threatening (hardest of that dungeon)?
Yes
Marionette parrar / little legion first turn, decoy on second turn.
No
Decoy first turn, attack on second.
Can your enemy inflict permanent status on your party?
Yes
Use sanae RES buff or Reimu border.
No
attack.
And why would you need more damage output there? having Marisa and Sakuya can clear most fights in 1 or 2 turn up to stage 20, if you add patchouli even more, and if you are using Satori most of the enemies will get paralized, berserk, charmed, poisoned or petrified in the first turn.

>> No.8862965

>>8862843

Mokou deals a ton of damage. You shouldn't give her crap weapons. Give her a nice Axe, and stun blow away. When a big guy or a really big crowd comes, you can use her spellcards. It doesn't happen too often, so her few bombs don't matter. But they are damn powerful.

>>8862855

The pdef buff isn't as bad as you think. It doesn't reduce damage to 0 on your mages, but hell, it makes you survive at least one attack more. Which is more than enough. It's a safety rope.

And of course Alice can keep your team alive with little legion. (if you have the bombs..) Of course Reimu could heal. But IT'S NOT NECESSARY. That's the whole damn point. If Reimu can heal with Alice in her team, she can do the same with Sanae. Added bonus: Sanae can heal too! So Reimu could just attack. Sanae only needs to cast her buff once after all.

And those hard hitting single target guys.. they must come up a lot after stage16, because I remember exactly one enemy who liked to always attack the low HP mages. But I didn't use Alice there and it was still fine. And all those really dangerous physical attackers tend to somehow be weak to blind, paralyze and/or instant death.

Honestly, this game would be very badly balanced, if you'd really NEED Alice in all stages. (Or Sanae.. or anyone) They all have their time to shine.

If you think mokou does good damage with an axe you don't know what good damage looks like. 2-3 damage dealers with sanae's buff is plenty high while also being safe. You're don't need to worry about anyone dying before they get a spell off.

>>blind, paralyze and/or instant death.

It's faster to just kill them. Why complain about damage if you're going to waste a spot on your team casting status effects? Those status effects have a horrible hit on most strong monsters anyway.
