Like %98 of time the distinction in Japan between "Japanese" and "non-Japanese" is purely genetic. You'll come across that with any country that you go to, aside from places like America and Canada which has foundations built on being the go-to country for Europe's rejects.

Generally speaking, every country has a higher population of people who are accepting of other people and cultures. The only reason why you hear so much about people getting flak from the Japanese is because Japan as a very rigorous social system that doesn't really appreciate loud obnoxious assholes.

The real (and oddly enough, easiest) way to make it in Japan is to speak Japanese and to not be loud and obnoxious. Apparently this is really hard for a lot of people from not-Asia.

Because we like Japanese culture despite the Japanese tendency toward xenophobia. The Japanese have a long literary culture including The Tale of Murisaki, Murakami, and Mishima. Their films include Kurosawa and Miyazaki. They essentially reinvented the home video game after the death of Atari and allowed the creation of a new medium from its infancy.

But yeah, they can be pretty fucking racist sometimes.

Well, there is some truth to that as far as day to day life is concerned. But Japan has been an isolated country for centuries, only allowing foreign trader in a few ports. They are hesitant to trust anyone who is not Japanese. Even now, they have few immigrants. Sure European countries do have ethic identifiers unlike the Americas, but because of their long tradition of colonization, not to mention the EU, which has allowed much more free movement from the eastern European countries, they also are much more accepting to immigrants and people of different cultural backgrounds.

Best answer in this thread. I too have a passing interest in Japan, but I think the problem with many nipponophiles is that there is no hope to adopt the culture and in turn be adopted by it. It just makes me sad how passionate you all can be about a culture that at some level will never accept you.

That's true. A part of it is due to the fact that they have high standards for their immigration policy. I think that has less to do with the fact that they're xenophobic and more with the fact that they're trying lower the amount of unskilled workers coming into the country from surrounding nations that have very low GDP.

Did the law just appear one day with no provocation from the culture? Was it a spontaneous thing? Or did Japan decide not to let in many immigrants because they're xenophobic.

This will have to change in Japan soon, because with their low birthrate they'll have to expand their labor pool. Maybe then Japan will change their opinion on immigrants.

I'm pretty certain the laws started out because of some pre-war/post-war sense of national pride and xenophobia, but by now that really doesn't mean much.

It's like the whole segregation thing 50 years ago in America. People and views change, the only difference is that the laws haven't because Japan is REALLY BAD at changing their laws (which is one of their more annoying cultural traits). To assume that because it's somewhat the same now as it was back than is the result of carryover cultural ideals rather than a lack of political drive because of an expectation of status quo and "not rocking the boat" is kind of ridiculous in my mind.

Being third in GDP means that they're just as affected by globalization as the rest of the world. They're obviously going to adapt culturally to that. Just that politician in Japan are awful.

Not true. My cousin who is half Vietnamese/French studied in London for a year overseas and was shocked at how racist some of these people were, even towards her despite her being of mixed race. It's certainly not a language issue either, since she speaks English very well.

I'm not going to say this of Europe as a whole, I'm sure a lot of them take it easy, but there seem to still be places where race is a sensitive issue.

Japanese culture (post WWII) is an amalgamation of about half Chinese and half American, but personally, I still find it to be fascinating.

I particularly love the attention to detail and focus on minimalistic simplicity in their design, food, art ,etc. It's also the only place you can find otaku media which, for me, is the only media I partake in nowadays.
