As I recall, the newfag/oldfag terminology popped up and was used to troll actual new posters, that is to say that those that used it revealed themselves as gullible newcomers. It's a pretty recent term, I don't remember seeing it before 2010. It seems that they've become legitimate terms due to the large influx of new posters misunderstanding or simply being unaware of the original context of these terms.

alright, you got me, i don't have any graphs to back up this claim through solid evidence, as quality is subjective. he who discovered an imageboard yesterday is going to think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

it's no big secret that with mainstream exposure /b/ went down the toilet, and you can observe this trend with any of the more popular boards declining in relative quality in time. this isn't a 4chan problem, it's a flaw in imageboard culture in general. linear growth is healthy for boards as you can assimilate the newer users into the board's group-think, however once there's a surge you end up with a majority of fresh users who bring over their posting etiquette from other boards / websites.
