>> No.8656941

>>8656934
I wish it was slower. Slower usually means longer posts and people putting more effort into what they type. Admit it, /jp/: most of you sit there refreshing the front page or have some script to do it for you. It would be nice if /jp/ was somewhere I could just check up on every few hours, but it's too damn addicting and I would feel like everyone is moving at a faster pace than me.

The text boards are more at that speed. The posts are different also, since they last forever.

When it gets too slow though, people tend to get disheartened and not reply as much, which only makes the board slower, and it ends up with the board constantly hovering over complete death.

I keep coming back because /jp/ is my home.

I've been in many communities; forums, IRC channels, virtual reality worlds, tons of them. I've been an active community member in many of them. But, it never lasted forever - often I left the community in mere months, sometimes it more than one and a half years. My contributions became less and less, and eventually I always left the community, for some still checking up on them every couple of months.

But not for /jp/. I made my first posts in August 2008.. And now, three and a half years later, I still visit daily. I'm in many IRC channels at all times, all but one /jp/-related. I play games /jp/ talks about. I keep up with what's happening and what people talk about on /jp/.

/jp/ has changed me in many ways:
-/jp/ has influenced the fact that I make music, and encouraged me to continue making it
-/jp/ has gotten me into writing, and I've written a lot of stories for /jp/ and communities directly related to /jp/
-/jp/ has caused me to read the best stories I've ever read
-/jp/ has caused me to play some of the best games I've ever played
-/jp/ has influenced the games I make and continues to do so until this day
-/jp/ has involved me in multiple projects, which changed my life in various ways
-/jp/ has helped me get over the illusion of 3D love and made me embrace 2D
-/jp/ has changed my opinion and opened my mind on many, many things
-/jp/ has gotten me into more kinds of weird porn than I could have imagined

Simply put.../jp/ is an important part of my life. It is my home. Even as it's overrun by newbies who understand none of this, even as the meaningful content increasingly becomes drowned in the posts of bored kids, it remains my home. I am cursed to remain here forever, even as the sight of my home decaying only depresses me.

I hate you guys. But at the same time...I love /jp/.

I agree, partially. The people that use non-retarded smileys at least do it consciously, unlike the ^_^ kids who use it instead of punctuation.

In my opinion, no one who uses smileys is worth listening to. Their words are worthless, thoughts meaningless, and heads empty.

Still, smileys, even the ones used on newsgroups are a crutch of sorts. Why would you use smileys when words would do? If you need to resort to smileys to express your thoughts, you're admitting your inadequacy in doing so.

Using smileys to denote sarcasm is self-defeating because, then, what's the point of it in the first place?

I agree with you for the most part. There's some people I respect / look up to that are much more knowledgeable than me, that also use smileys, though, so I can't say this is a solid rule. Though these people tend to be from the long lost 80s/90s BBS scene, so I guess it has just stuck with them for all this time.

>Otaku, Noun; (in Japan) Young people who are highly skilled in or obsessed with computer technology to the detriment of their social skills.

>Otaku (おたく / オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga or video games.

Isn't Otaku the basically the Japanese word for the autist quality of having an interest into which you heavily devote a lot of your time and effort?

So, in reality, this place has always been a board for random content, with 2D theme.

>> No.8658713

>>8658685
People like you are part of the problem. Why bother with quality threads when you can just dump random images from danbooru?

However, I think /jp/'s main problem is the lack of direction. There's simply nothing to discuss. VN people stay in their 2-3 threads; the 10 or so Touhou threads cover almost every subject.

So what does that leave us? A vacuum ripe for shitposting.

>> No.8658854

To expand on my previous post a bit.

Let's say moot creates a vaguely defined board with vaguely defined topics. Called, let's say, "Thumbs.db - Paperclips/General". From day one, it will have the same problem /jp/ has. It will stagnate, and rot.
However, there immediately appear people who will claim it as their home, claiming that they belong there. They, however, will be liars, because it doesn't belong to anyone, and the board itself is about nothing. But their behavior is completely natural, given a power vacuum like that. Groups who don't have a home board will flock to it like Jews to Israel, claiming that it is their promised land. Then they will say that their promised land has been tainted by outsiders, (be it /a/, /v/, or /b/, in the case of /jp/). But the truth is, it's a wasteland, that was always this way (shitty in /jp/'s case).

The problem stems from that fact that there's simply nothing to discuss anymore, there never was, "Otaku Culture" is a bullshit definition pulled out of moot's ass, and those who claim otherwise are fucking Jews trying to grab whatever land they can get their hands on.

>> No.8658910

>>8658713
Pointless yes, but they're at least productive. Only a little discussion perhaps, but at least it's honest. And look at /m/, they've got precious little to discuss besides ancient mecha anime and they deal with it just fine. The board's just slow, not actively terrible. Although a few /jp/ migrants are doing their best to change that.

>> No.8658920

Used to be there was a general admission that "Otaku Culture" didn't really mean anything, it was just an umbrella for Touhou, VNs, and stuff like dakimakuras and figurines.

/jp/ was created specifically to get touhou, VNs and other extra stuff out of /a/. They didn't have an on-topic board to post to so moot made them one. Japan/General didn't describe the board at all so it was renamed Otaku Culture which I think describes it just fine.

This is partially a response to that post >>8661290

The circumstances that /jp/ was created under are not at all similar to the circumstances you describe in your post.

I thought /jp/ was created to house the mentally ill posters separately from the rest of 4chan.
