I'm new to visual novels, all I've played is Katawa Shoujo and I'm not sure if that's approved of around here. But I like it, and I want to play more. I'm looking for something rustic and slightly creepy, maybe set in early 20th century? But aside from that, what's some general stuff you would recommend?

I know /jp/ moves super fast, but please try not to shit it up any further than the usual shitpoting, I know the thread is sincere, but there's just about always a vn general thread up. It, along with touhou, is the bread and butter of /jp/,

>> No.8653404

See, VN, particularly Japanese VN, have a couple common traits that make them a bit hard to get into by some people.

If I were you, I'd play something like Yume Miru Kusuri - it's not the greatest VN out there, and it definitely doesn't meet your criteria, but it's a good measuring stick - if you like it(or at even if it just leaves you unimpressed), you should be able to enjoy most VN, and then you can come back, lurk for a bit, and read some actually good ones.

Which is the bread and which is the butter?

I'm saying Touhou is the butter.

Katawa Shoujo isn't that much as compared to most Japanese VNs. If you want creepy, you should try Saya no Uta, the most popular creepy visual novel there is. If you liked that, you'll like majority of VNs including many strange ones, excluding some seriously niche stuff.

No, I didn't. But it's slightly better than saying "I'm completely new to visual novels and have no idea what they might be like, do you know any with such-and-such a mood?"

>>8653384
I'll bear that in mind, but since this thread's already going...

/jp/ is a shitty board. If you want good advices you should ask on /vg/, they are more helpful.

>> No.8653484

Maybe you could try using google to find popular VNs and playing a few more before posting a recommendation thread.

>> No.8653656

I thought true remembrance was really beautiful. It's set in a secluded village where patients afflicted by a disease-like melancholia called "The Dolor" are attended by "mnemnocides" who are tasked with gently erasing the traces which underlie said melancholy.

higurashi seems like it'd fit the rustic/slightly creepy genres quite well, and I liked it a lot--it really brought out the characterization much more vividly than when I first read/watched the anime/manga. along with narcissu (same author as true remembrance), those are probably the ones I'd recommend.

I haven't played that many vns but I prefer ones which are more "atmospheric" or ones which might be described as "psychological"

No, it isn't. If you'd spent time on jp for more than 5 minutes you'd know why.

>I'll bear that in mind, but since this thread's already going...

You can delete thread you know.

Read Swan Song.

OP, check out Kara no Shoujo.
http://vndb.org/v810

As other anons said, use the VN general thread. Also ask for some VN recommendation charts there. I'd post them but I don't have them on my phone.

use fuuka.warosu.org/jp to fund the VN general thread.

Seconding Saya no Uta. It's a very entry-level (sorry) VN but it's pretty damn good. Especially if you like the whole Lovecraftian madness thing.

There's this recommendation image, you can have it.

I was also going to say Kara no Shoujo, as well as Cross Channel. The original Higurashi should be fine too.

I'm not one to usually point out this kind of things just for the sake of it, but
>A Profile
>Scenario: 4/5, Visuals: 3/5
>Kazoku Keikaku
Scenario: 5/5, Visuals: 3/5
>Muv-Luv Alternative
>Scenario: 4/5, Visuals: 3/5
That chart is laughable.

>> No.8657616

>>8657529
Kara no Shoujo and Cross Channel? More like Goreshit and Moreshit.

>> No.8657646

>>8657572
MLA's character designs are horrible and as the setting in the VN kis presented is really underdeveloped.

>> No.8657664

Cross Channel is a retarded choice for someone's first VN, unless you want to put him off the medium.

Most of good VN require being used to common VN tropes to be enjoyed properly, and those that don't are a small majority that would set up unreasonable expectations.

In other words, play something mediocre like YMK or F/SN.

>> No.8657682

>>8657646
I'm not saying Muv-Luv should have 18/5 or anything.
But to put the scenario of A Profile at the same level, and Kazoku Keikaku's scenario above it... it's ridiculous.

>> No.8657691

>>8657682
Yeah, A Profile and KazoKei should be at 4/5 too probably.

>> No.8657695

>> No.8657697

it's somewhat understandable if he's very biased towards SoL and poorly thought out twists (I'm looking at you A Profile lol illness is plot), but that doesn't change his objectively bad judgement for categories.
at least if he just plays the games he reads the names of on the list, he'll get through all the popular shit and the general must-plays.

It's not my list though, and I've not played many vns myself just a few otome/bl games. I mean... Rance was my intro to vns, so I don't really give advice.

But I thought the image might be a good idea for the OP to get some idea of what he might like or titles that may interest him.

Just want to tell you how fucking old that chart is, Symphonic rain isn't even translated according to it, and that was out in fucking 2009.
