I did a horrible thing and joined a weeaboo club.

We had a shitty maid cafe.
Overpriced tiny slices of cake, watered down beverages, and may god help you if you were unlucky enough to come any time after the first wave, because they had to re-use plastic dishes. They were washed in an aluminum container used for cooking full of water. They were first dipped inside, washed with a nasty sponge, and then rinsed off in there, and finally wiped down with a paper towel.


Moral of the story: Don't leave your room, or think of going anywhere. You never know what's going on behind the scenes.

As someone that has purely retail experience, honestly, being good looking really isn't a demand to get employed in the sector. The only exceptions tend to be incredibly high end stores. Even then, it's largely down to a willingness to contend with customers. Us retail folk really can be a disappointment on the eyes.

Obviously, this is anecdotal evidence. But I'd still like it recognized that saying the girls are average or unattractive isn't improbable. Not every comment like it should be dismissed as unrealistic high expectations.

I've been to a few amount of them. Pretty fun. You have to understand that there's lots of different types and know what you are getting into though. Food, looks, atmosphere, service, entertainment, conversation... Every place will have a different balance of their priorities. Do a little research to find the right place for you.

My opinions in Akiba (I am far from an expert though.)

Usagi no Mori: Great food, atmosphere, and costumes. Little conversation, stage shows aren't that exciting and sometimes lip synced. It is fun now and then but I can't see myself becoming a regular. Only have gone once so far though.

Dearstage: Not actually a maid cafe, outfits will be different basically every day you go. Great entertainment from stage shows. Lots of conversation with a casual atmosphere. Lots of different staff members, many are very fun to talk with. Food is overpriced but flashy. My #1 choice.

Schatz-kiste: Great atmosphere. Good for relaxation, and I wouldn't feel awkward going there alone probably. Only ate a desert but it was quite yummy, and you get free refills on your tea. I have only been there once, but I think its more open conversations between the maids themselves rather than one on one type interaction.

mai-dreaming: I never went, heard its over rated.

Cos-Cha: Haven't been there in years but if you want the girls to slap you or something like that, they do it here, and wear sukumizu and stuff during events. Good for those who want that kind of touchy-feely service, or just want to shock their friends. The maids will kneel when they talk to you, blow on your food, that kind of stuff. I remember the atmosphere being very lacking, but I think it's changed since then.

Cure maid cafe: For those who want a "classy" maid cafe experience, I recommend Schatz-kiste instead, but cure maid isn't bad I guess. The maids mostly mind their own business.

I am visiting a couple places today. We'll see how it goes.
