Translation is about making something understandable in another language, so that they can get the closest experience to a native speaker enjoying it in its native language.

I'm sure the joke was of a similar nature to this, and if it isn't exactly the same, then it wouldn't have worked if the literal meaning was simply translated to English. They went for something that worked. The Japanese players weren't asking "What does this mean?" nor should the English players.

Bad translators translate, good translators localize.

Bad translators shit all over the original work and treat their readers like prepubescent children that need everything they don't immediately understand to be Americanized and localized into epic 4chan memes like saged, reported, and called the cops.
Good translators translate and leave it up to the readers themselves to figure out the nuances, because they know their readers are mature enough to understand that not everything stemming from a different culture can be so easily Americanized without taking a giant steaming dump all over the original writing.

I agree with this documentary's stance. It fits >>8619262,5 (not overly explaining or changing foreign references) while also fitting >>8619262,2 (giving the viewer the same experience as a native-language viewer).
People who insist on literalness for the sake of it are dumb and don't know what they're asking for. Even if you passively understand what "Kenichi-sama" means, "Mr Kenichi" registers in your brain closer to the original Japanese intention.

I used to not mind translations or localizations but then someone made me watch a kdrama and now I realize why not localizing is dumb. I speak Japanese now, and even when I started watching I was already ``trying'' to learn Japanese but I have NO interest in Korean. I had to sit through 18 episodes of subs using words I don't know and don't care about learning (and sometimes for entirely different situations, what the fuck does ``oppa'' even mean?). Just localize for the casual watchers who have no interest in learning other languages.
