Is Rosetta Stone actually useful to learn Japanese?

Have you tried it?

Also, feel free to talk about other Japanese learning tools.

I've heard it's absolute shit for learning but useful if you need to practice speaking.

It's a fine tool. It just doesn't teaches you the alphabets, which is why everyone goes BAWWWWW about it.

All rosetta stone does is have you look at a word, then gives you multiple choice answers asking you what it is, and then that's it. You won't understand the grammar behind it, and you won't know what you're saying exactly because you won't know how to break down what you just said. You won't learn kana or any kanji either. It's worthless.

No, but it's not like you're going to pay for it any way.

This. It even goes so far as to put the words into random sentences and then doesn't explain anything else.

The point is that's how kids learn. Like you'll recognize the patterns between when a word is used to learn what it means. However this falls short because they use stock photographs not representative of what the thing is. Like they'll show businessmen in ties for a word and you'll think, "Well they're all men, so this word is 'man'." then it will turn out to be 'tie'.
It's a pretty good idea, but they do it terribly and you can tell they have not done enough research. I feel like they bought the patent, realized it was worthless, but then decided they had to use it anyway without realizing that traditional spaced repetition is much more effective.

Not only is the japanese version shit, but all other versions are too.
It's like a matching game that only gets far more convoluted. The actual creators don't even assure that you can learn the language.
