What visual novels do you find are much better than their vndb/egs rating would suggest?

Pic related; Aoishiro is freaking awesome, yet not even an 8 in vndb

I started playing this when the translation patch was released... still haven't finished it. There were a bunch of things that just didn't make sense. For example when everyone finds out about the ghost sucking the girl's life-force at night, no one freaks out, as if they were used to seeing paranormal things.

Syouko casually walking off a cliff and noticing the fact mid-fall was the best part of the game. She survives thanks to Kohaku, though.

In fact, Kei casually walking off a cliff and noticing the fact mid-fall was the best part of Akaiito, too. She, too, survives thanks to Yumei and this I think leads to the nose blood drinking scene.

Asairo. Because only one heroine and no routes together with previous butthurt is the perfect mix for people to get mad at it and downvote.

Aoishiro never manages to keep my attention. I play it for a while, then I never feel the incentive to pick it up again. Then I try again, but I never keep playing. It has too much slice-of-life, and that slice-of-life isn't interesting enough to be interesting on its own.

Not truly a VN, but still listed on VNDB at a mere 6.53 is Crimsoness. For a short game you can fully complete without a guide in less than 30 minutes it's fucking awesome. I personally rated it 9/10. Definitely worth playing, only takes a bit of your time: http://www.insani.org/releases/CrimsonessSetup%5Binsani%5D%5BAT2008%5D.exe

Quartett! (VNDB rating 7.67) is a difficult one to rate. I personally rated it 8.4, but I would recommend it more strongly than the rating suggests. It does revolutionary things with the visual novel medium, to the point it seems more like a 'visual comic' than a visual novel. Presentation-wise, I'd give it a 10/10. My only problem with it is that the story never really does anything truly interesting. Still, the presentation is amazing and the slice-of-life is very interesting, so I highly recommend it. And rating it only 7.67 is bullshit, it deserves an 8 at the very least.

Suika is pretty underrated.

うちの妹のばあい
I'm guessing its mediocre egs score is because of the NTR.

for translated eroge MOON. by far takes the crown.

I had to do a double take when I saw that MOON hadn't even cracked 7.0 in vndb

Aoishiro is evil in that they give you a flowchart. It makes you waste so much time trying to find out each and every path.

>> No.8589474

People rarely talk about Higanbana, let alone praise it. However, I found it pretty damn good, at least better than Umineko.

>>8589981
Definitely. I think quite a few people on /jp/ like it but its rating on vndb isn't very high.

Aoishiro is one of the few games that make FSN's slice of life scenes seem exciting.

I was really put off by how the first chapter revolved around the sexual/mental abuse, brutalization, and death of a loli without significant payoff in the end to be worth it.
I'll give the Second Night a shot, but IMO it's already the worse R07 thing I've ever read.

>> No.8590662

>>8589474
Well, R07 other works are translated.

Once it gets translated, we'll see how it goes. Given the bad taste Umineko Episode 8 left, I think less people are going to try it out.

>> No.8591275

Aoishiro is one of the few VNs that makes you really work not to die.

>> No.8591291

>>8590662

R07 planned from the start not to release the Truth behind everything and instead give it this kind of ending. He said it in an interview. If you don't like it, then you just don't like Umineko as a whole.

He also said he doesn't want to write a story like Umineko again, in the same interview, so why not try out other things he writes?
