I'm going to be taking a japanese placement exam in august and I'm wondering how much content the average japanese 101 classes cover. I've got the material in genki I & II down. Is that the equivalent to a 101 course? I'm hoping I can skip into the next level course.

Genki 1 is usually covers 101 and 102, from what I experienced. YMMV.

I feel pretty confident with the grammar but writing the kanji is a problem. I can read the kanji fine but I never really practiced writing them often. I did buy kanji kakitorikun, so that should help.

You need to learn how to write those kanji. And I'm assuming this, but you also need more speaking experience. That being said, August is a while away, and 101 is full of faggots. You'll probably test out of it. But for a classroom setting, you need to improve your writing and speaking if you're self taught.

For college courses, yes. You'll be doing a lot of speaking in class. The first Japanese course I took was 90% speaking. It is a language, after all. I'm not going to be a faggot and try to dissuade you from anything, but you should know that speaking and listening are just as important as reading, writing, grammar, vocab, etc. You don't have to be perfect, but you should be able to speak the sentences you write in genki at a reasonable pace. Get the genki CD of some torrent, get your pronunciation down a bit, and you'll be fine. 101 is literally chock full of faggots, so any somewhat serious approach will get you tested out, I think.

>> No.855971

Currently learning Japanese on my own, but will be starting in 101 this fall for my university's 1 year of language classes requirement. I've learned from this thread that it will be full of faggots. God damnit.

>> No.855979

>>855935

Oh, and when I say "reasonable pace", I don't mean "as fast as you speak English". You're only trying to place out of an intro class, so stuttering and pausing are probably still OK. Just make sure you're not saying things like "ganki" "deh-seat-a" and things like that.

I have the pronunciation down but I probably need to work on being able to speak a bit faster. I was thinking I should probably find a native speaker on skype or something.

>> No.855998

Don't ask us, look at the curriculum. I think my university covers genki I in the first semester...

Dude, don't bother. At least not yet. You'll be blown away and over-intimidated. Torrent the genki CD, make sure you can understand a good portion of it, and work on your writing. I think you'll be fine.

I forgot about those listening tapes. Never bothered to buy them with the books because they were too expensive. So now I'm downloading them at blazing speed. Also, for writing I have a neglected copy of 漢字かきとりくん for my DS.
