Not to say either hell or heaven exists, but that the nervous system is 'essentially just a bunch of neurons' says nothing about the existence (or non-existence) of a 'soul', which isn't a physical concept to begin with. There might be ways to prove souls don't exist, but your argument isn't.

We don't understand the brain well enough to explain consciousness. Coincidentally, most religions link consciousness and the "soul" or "afterlife". I'm not trying to support religion, but you apparently don't understand what you're talking about outside of being able to list a few scientific words relevant to what you're talking about, one of which is now used almost exclusively in a machine learning context and which shares only a few basic characteristics with the brain's neurons in that usage.

Ah, right. Usually when I'm up for more than two days, I just start going in and out of sleep. It can get kind of scary, but I've never really had any signs of death. I do sleep for a very long time, however. And my ability to do anything other than sit down is greatly effected.

So you are saying we can't have an afterlife because our mental processes are of physical nature? What if your brain, with all your habits and memories encoded into it, was recreated at some point in the future or the past or simulated on a computer by another conscious being or a random process? Wouldn't that be an afterlife?
