We're what made up the VN and Touhou discussion on /a/ back in 2007.

Although back then the only VNs we had to discuss was Tsukihime, F/SN Fate route, Ever17, A drug that makes you dream, Narcissu and Planetarian.

There was almost always a Tsukihime discussion everyday, and so Moot decided to split the Earth and thus /jp/ was born.

Were you really around on /a/ back then? They threw shitfits all the time because the things weren't translated, or not "anime/manga" enough.
I got banned for Type-Moon, Utawareromono, N+ and even English stuff like YMK.

/a/ apparently used to be purely for "Anime / Manga".
VNs, Doujin games/soft/music, Galge and Eroge all became a bannable offence.

So after tons of whinefests, /jp/ was created to hold and contain all the stuff that was frequently posted on /a/ but wasn't purely "anime / manga", meaning doujin stuff, VNs, Eroge, Galge, but also things like Idols, and believe it or not, Light Novels etc.

So in short, /jp/ is about everything that shouldn't go in /a/. People over there might have forgotten about that, and commonly use the same arguments that didn't suffice before the split. Though most argue as if it was always related over at that place.
Technically though, anything that is /jp/ related is by definition not /a/ related. They just discuss that stuff anyway due to almost being "/a/ - 2D / Random"

You can go on /a/ at any given time and there will be at least a dozen or so on-topic, active threads. Meanwhile on /jp/ that's only really true for long "established" threads (GUST, dolls, figs, idolfaggotry, etc) whilst everything else is just pure unapologetic shitposting with the occasional gem now and then. That'd be fine if the shitposting was actually funny, but it's just tedious.

The general sense I get from this thread isn't that /jp/ is better, but that they're both bad. They both have their reasons, in particular /a/ is bigger and more popular, which naturally means more trolls and idiots who fall for them cluttering the front page. /jp/ is smaller, and has shitposting, which while annoying is also unfortunately accepted in a way as the board's pacing is slow enough without it. Also the divide between the two boards is pretty thin, leading to a lot of overlapping discussion between them, particularly in regards to LN and VNs. I could go on but something something autism.
