Autism is caused by that very attitude. It causes children to fear human contact and thus devolve into autism.

Most serial killers have a similar, though more extreme, style of upbringing.

He's right that it's a fraud though. The real cure is just holding them to popular standards, though with ample time and space to slowly adapt to regular behavior. Simply tossing them into the 'real world' will just make them to shut themselves off more.

Aside from that: I grew up with a genuinely autistic kid. I'm familiar with what the condition truly is like. That said, I do feel that there is a rampant over-diagnosis (especially self-diagnosis) as if simply being socially underdeveloped equates to the condition. There is a huge difference between people who just haven't properly/healthily developed socially and those who actually cannot.

I don't think there's rampant over-diagnosis in the sense that neurotypical kids are being misdiagnosed, but I think autism-like social/personality disorders are more common than thought.

Just think of all the physical conditions that are very heavily diagnosed - 1 in 3 get cancer at some point in their lives? and nobody bats an eye-lid. It's perfectly acceptable that there may be some neurological conditions which are A) Very common, B) Need time and respect.

Some people seem to fear labels, but there's nothing wrong with explaining why certain people may have certain difficulties. There's this awful right wing stereotype out there of using conditions like ADHD or Autism to excuse "Bad kids" when exactly why people act in any particular way in the first place is a mystery.
