Hey /jp/. Have you ever heard Touhou's music on the synth Zum composed on?
Obviously it doesn't sound BETTER (Since the synth is from 1997), but I think it sounds more coherent because ZUN mixed and mastered for/on this device.
Here's U.N Owen Was Her?:

I prefer the original because it's more aggressive but this one is more harmonic, things may be different if I had heard this first.

>> No.8497118

>>8497106
It's mostly a matter of preference. If you're going chronologically, the OP video is the "Original."
ZUN composed most of touhou's music on the Roland SC-88Pro (Playing in the OP video) and then went "WELL, LET'S THROW SOME FILTERS AND SOUNDFONTS OVER IT!"

And that's how we got the redbook versions of the songs.

>> No.8497125

Isn't this just the normal midi version played through an external synth?

>> No.8497128

>>8497125
This is true, but it's the exact synth Zun composed and mixed the song on.

The Roland SC-88Pro. It says so right in the init message of the midis.

>> No.8497140

>>8497136
Fair enough. I've never actually looked at them.

As a side note, the Shuusou Gyoku stuff sounds pretty cool on an SC-88pro, too.

OP here.
Obviously I'm not saying the SC88 version sounds BETTER, but, working in production, I've always felt the panning (and mixing on the whole) on the redbook versions felt a bit off-kilter.

on the SC-88Pro, the mixing is pretty balanced.
I'd bet ZUN sequenced for the SC-88Pro and then threw some soundfonts at the midi without adjusting the mix at at all.

>> No.8497176

How does it have any difference with the midi?

>> No.8497185

>>8497176
Each synth is going to have their own unique sound for each "instrument", as well as slight to significant differences in its interpretation before playing it back. I'm sure someone else knows more though.

>I'd bet ZUN sequenced for the SC-88Pro and then threw some soundfonts at the midi without adjusting the mix at at all.
Actually, this happened very often in games from the '90s that had MIDI tracks as music, and then they decided to add Redbook tracks wih the MIDI tracks fed through shitty soundfonts because the Audio CDs were the shit at the time.

wow! roland sc-88s sound awful

how did ZUN mess up so bad?

>> No.8497198

>>8497192
No they don't. They're just from the early 90's.

Also, you're a bit predisposed to think they're awful because you've been taught to believe that the default Windows synth is awful, and the Sound Canvas sounds somewhat similar because Microsoft threw money at Roland until they gave them a little bit of the wavetable.

I had the same problem. I got over it.

All of PCB, EoSD, and IN. Pick a song.

Final Fantasy 7's music was composed for the SC88 too (In fact, I believe Nobuo Uematsu used an SC-88 to compose for the Final Fantasy games all the way until like just before XIV development began because it had clear instrument positions and didn't muddy up the audio.

Certain parts of that actually sound better, particularly the repeating notes at the beginning. They sound a hell of a lot loli-er.

OK, so to find it I just search the song in question followed by SC88? How is this obtained, does someone play the Redbook through the synthesizer?

>> No.8497237

>>8497231
The redbook version is the wav version that was distributed with the game. To get the original version, you have to find the midi version, buy a roland SC88 on ebay, attach it to your computer with a midi cable, loop the synth audio out into your line in jack, and record it.

If no version exists, just give me the song name and I'll do it for you and post it here.

>> No.8497240

This sounds a lot like Standard MIDI. As in, how you'd hear .MIDs through a SoundBlaster or whatever. I'm clueless about SoundFonts and such things.

This isn't very...synthy. It all sounds sampled, whereas "traditional" synth music generally sounds more "generated". I think it's called additive/subtractive synthesis.

Someone who knows more than me, please try to arrange my post into a coherent argument. Thank you.

>> No.8497250

Have you heard the music CD versions, OP? They sound smoother and I'd like to know what you think he did with them.

>> No.8497256

>>8497240
It sounds a lot like a midi file because Microsoft threw money at Roland until they sampled their synth and handed a bit of their wavetable over.

As for the organic, "Generated" sound, you're thinking of the Roland MT-32, which sounds FANTASTIC (It has some of the best drums I've ever heard, and I like it a lot more than the Sound Canvas)
But ZUN didn't compose the midis for the MT-32, so you can't listen to them on the MT-32. The MT-32 isn't a General Midi compatible synth.

That makes sense. Thank you.

It is when you're ZUN. Listen to the mixing in the wav versions. It's obvious he was jus ta lazy motherfucker and didn't edit the midi data AT ALL.

OP here. In case you're wondering, the SC-88 isn't my favorite synth. The Yamaha DB50XG is. It was a computer midi card that was like $150 at the time it was released in 1995.
It sounded better than everything on the market up to $2000 and had FULL GM, XG, and Roland GS support (about 950 patches total.) It was a total world-beater.
The SC-88 was released at the same time as the DB50XG for much, much more money.

Here, have a comparison between the two:

There is only one synth you'll ever need: The Yamaha MU-2000EX
I've been trying to find one locally for YEARS. I call it "The AllSynth," because it supports GM, GM2, GS, and XG. It can play every kind of midi file ever made.
