> Why wouldn't you be editing alongside translation?

I've only just started working on VNs, but it seems like a lot of newbie TLs like to skip around in the script (I'm not talking skipping by scenes, I mean like, only TLing every other or even every like 3rd or 5th line) because they can only understand the "easy" lines so editing would be next to impossible.

Also a lot of TLs just straight up suck requiring scripts to be heavily TLC'd or even completely retranslated before you can edit effectively. Somehow it seems like it takes twice as long to clean up an incompetent TL's script than it would to just translate it from scratch (I'm glad the idiots on the team I joined only got like 100 lines into the game before I signed on, because just fixing that much was extremely unpleasant).

>> No.8487562

There aren't. It's hard enough to get one actual translator on a project and going over all your work multiple times is a quick way to burn yourself out. Translators also have their own styles, especially good ones that translate tone and style of scenes instead of what's literally written. The best you can usually hope for are editors with a passing familiarity with Japanese to catch the worst errors. Everybody makes stupid mistakes now and then.

>> No.8487571

An entire season of fansubbing one show will be somewhere in the range of 3000 VN lines and they also use tone and context instead of words in text file. A VN translator that does 3000 lines over 3 months is probably working on FHA.

The only real parallel that can be seen from anime fansubbing to most VN fantranslations would be something like the group that did LoGH

You are translating something that is extremely long, complete so the full magnitude of the title is looking at you, and even if you finish, no matter how good your work is or how good the title is, because of the much smaller audience you won't get tons of attention.

>> No.8487627

A significant portion is mental too. Fansubbing is an hour's worth once a week (per show) for a quick hit of e-penis. Even a tiny VN is a month+ of work for maybe a week or two of attention, much of which won't be positive anyway.

>> No.8487670

Having TLCs for VN projects would imply that there is an abundance of competent translators with a ton of time on their hands. This, of course, is not the case. Most VN projects are someone saying, "Hey, I like this game, I should try translating it for others!"

You can't really expect that much from most of them.

>> No.8487680

>>8487554
>hiring translators
Hiring a translator is easy. Hiring one that a) knows what they're doing and b) doesn't disappear in two weeks is not.

Also, I'm fairly certain most completed projects had one dedicated translator. A project without a translator shouldn't even exist in the first place. On the other hand, projects looking for multiple translators are prettty much destined to fail. Why? They're looking for fallback plans in case their translator disappears. A translator would only start thinking about having backup once they realise they'll never complete a game by themselves.

I mean, why else would want to share the glory and e-peen of translating a game with someone else?

>>8487416
TLCs are for translators who attempt something beyond their level. If one selects a game wisely (based on their level of proficiency), a TLC would be a redundant job. It also follows that if your TL is a complete amateur, your TLC would probably end up doing most of the translating anyway...

>> No.8487724

>>8487680

Yeah, I mean, it seems like it's more successful when a translator starts a project that they picked because they liked the game and it was within their skill level, but I've seen several where one enthusiastic person goes HEY LETS TRANSLATE THIS VN! and takes any volunteer to start translating even if they're clearly in over their head. Though, then again maybe this is just a particular problem in the fangirl community which does seem to have an more enthusiasm than skill in most cases.

As far as TLCs go, I feel like it can be useful if there's an issue of specialization (ex. the primary TL can't into kansai-ben or something), but generally, yeah.

Gameplay is the main reason I waited for Kamidori to get translated before touching it, anyway.

Before I heard that it was Aroduc's project (and thus thinking no one had picked it up), I was thinking about playing it untranslated but wasn't too keen on the idea. Gameplay-heavy stuff always has so much image-based text that I can't hook (and is sometimes in fonts that make it a bitch to read even if I should know the kanji). There are 6, but there are more and more branches of every chapter, sequentially.

That is, there is one version of Chapter 1, something like 3 or 4 of Chapter 2, something like 12 or 15 of ch3, etc. etc.
Essentially, Chapter 6 contains half the game's content on its own. Hence, it should take much longer to test and edit.

There's six chapters? JAST is already taking preorders. What the fuck is up with these people? You'd kinda think if they decided to go Hollywood and do an official English translation they'd give the shit a bit more priority.

I was the guy who put that image up and my intention was not to troll (I only put it up because there was someone else in that thread who had messed around with the tools before), though I see it has been interpreted as trolling.

I went on IRC after that to get a project started, but I got told to fuck off and come back when I had a significant portion of the script translated. Understandable, considering I'm a complete no-name in this scene and the game being what it is. So I'm working towards that. You're free to believe what you want, but I'm deadly serious about it and this is happening, regardless of what you choose.

The problem as I understand it is that everything is indexed somehow, bytecode maybe, within the scripts. If the text changes, then all the references have to be updated too or it'll break the first time there's any kind of flag or goto statement. Xross Scramble is completely linear, so as long as it starts at the right part of the script, it won't 'notice' that everything inside it is in what it thinks is the wrong place. Duel Savior is very much not.

I learned hiragana and katakana 3 years ago and never bothered with kanji and procrastinated the whole time. I picked it up again 2 months ago and it turned out to be easier than expected, so about 2.5 years should be plenty to be able to read Baldr Sky.

I even tried the Material Brave demo, and while 80% of stuff flew over my head, I at least understood the casual interactions between the characters (so far). If you've been watching anime this whole time, you should manage.

Just wondering about the fan translation scene. How many of these TLs, both VN or anime fansub, actually have an academic background in English composition?

90% of translations reads like something out of a shitty newspaper. Not grammatically incorrect, but dull. If there's no problem with the actual J-E translation itself, there always seems to be some critical English pacing problems.

Is it just a matter of how literal the translations are? Are the editors just being lazy? Or do these guys simply not have adequate skill in composition, nevermind the actual translation theory?

From an editor's perspective, it's a combination of being lazy and not having a formal collegiate education in what we do. Of the editors I know, only Sheeta from Amaterasu is pursuing some English language degree.

All I have going for me in terms of formal requirements and experience is a high school level background in journalism and publishing, content mill writing, and three visual novels. I read contemporary-ish novels in between projects, and one of them is translated from Ukranian, which makes me feel better about how I'm doing.

Most fan translators for Visual Novels and related material (anime, light novels, etc) are self-taught or minimally educated in Japanese. There are exceptions like Takajun and Makoto, of course, but there isn't enough demonstrated money or interest in English-translated VNs to attract any degree-holding giants.
