The year I spent in Japan was mostly filled with awesome. I had a great time and made a lot of new friends. Sure, it's not all rainbows over there and yes I did meet some racist people as well. Overall though, it's not like they want to kill you in your sleep just because you're not Japanese. My positive experiences might also be related to the fact that I'm not Australian.

Currently in Japan and it fucking sucks.
But the reason it sucks has nothing to do with racism or their hate for you.
They have a horrible work culture and everyone in Tokyo seems to be in a rush all the time. It is also expensive as hell and it is almost like living in a prison cell.
It is great for vacation, just not for long term residence.
Kansai and Hokkaido especially are 100000000000x better than Tokyo.

But its really funny, it always comes down to this:

There is no in-between.
This is also true for people I spoke to.

I think a huge factor is if you can speak the language.
Otherwise you get lonely, depressed and most of all, dissapointed. And once you are in that state it will only get worse, because you won't attract new people anymore.

Another important factor is the attitute you have when traveling to japan.
Japan is very very different. Some things are obvious, others are not.
I found that japanese are very forgiving, even to long living foreigners, its the "will to adapt" that counts, similar to what >>8485411 was writing.

If you do the following:
>A. Learn japanese/Find people who can speak english BEFORE you travel
>B. Positive attitude / Know that you get to visit a foreign land, be respectful.
>C. Make shorter visits first. Maybe 2 weeks first. Then a month. Then 3 etc., otherwise there is a chance you get dissapointed.

While I've always returned, I've been for quite a while in japan and it was fucking awesome and I made friends that always help me out alot.
Some people might be suspicous of you, but they warm up quickly if you can start a conversation.
Of course there are also people that are assholes, but they exist in every country.

So to make things short:
Don't rush, get to know the language. And you gonna have an awesome time.
If you don't like the culture, don't travel there. Japan won't hopefully change for OP.
