Pirate bay adds 3d objects, immediately used to pirate warhammer
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/01/25/filesharing-website-pirate-website_n_1231061.html

>In a blog post The Pirate Bay said that physical objects ("physibles") represent "the next step in copying".

>"We believe that things like three dimensional printers, scanners and such are just the first step," the website said. "We believe that in the nearby future you will print your spare sparts for your vehicles. You will download your sneakers within 20 years.

>"The benefit to society is huge. No more shipping huge amount of products around the world. No more shipping the broken products back. No more child labour.

>"We'll be able to print food for hungry people. We'll be able to share not only a recipe, but the full meal. We'll be able to actually copy that floppy, if we needed one."

>And as soon as the Pirate Bay 'physibles' section launched, at least one company appeared to have been made a target.

>A model listed by an anonymous user as a 'Tabletop Wargaming Robot Model' - but identifiable to the Huffington Post UK as the likeness of a Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Dreadnought, which is a trademarked design of the UK-based Games Workshop Group PLC - was freely available and had already been downloaded by at least 23 people as of press time.

>The model, an official version of which costs £28 from Games Workshop, has been previously listed on a 3D printing community website, but the plans were reportedly pulled after a takedown notice was issued.

Because they can stil copy most mechanical apparatuses. You could model mechanical clock on your computer, print it out and the thing would work.
And in the future they will probably be able to print in different materials.

i'm interested how this pans out in the figure industry as 3d printers get more affordable.
sure you can print out the fig you always wanted but i doubt the quality will be the same. also its just not the same as owning the original.

on the flipside maybe fig makers will be forced to step up their quality or lower their prices.
not a shred of sympathy for GW though. their shit has always been way to overpriced.

Someone posted a 3D printed figure in one of the fig threads some time ago, the level of detail was ridiculously good.
3D printers are still limited color-wise, though, so it's more likely to be a substitute for garage kits instead of prepainted figs.

>> No.8484535

>>8484529
Isn't it supposed to get much cheaper soon as the patents are going to expire, though?

>> No.8484536

I wonder if people will still say that filesharing is free.
Cause that's far from the truth.

Storage media is expensive, and in the EU they even have a fee that they "tax" people when they buy storage media to give to artists or whatnot because of file sharing (even though its still illeagal to share said files).
Electricity, to have a computer up and running all the time to download said files also adds up for some notble sums by the end.
And the internet connection itself, ISPs require money.

Filesharing is allot more expensive than food or whatnot.
And 3D printing, the materials for that shit costs money too.

You would think such things, but then again I work for the government of the USA. Things like this have been around for a good 6 years now. There is no way on hell any one will be able to use one publicly for another 20 years, if that. Anything I make is under wraps until at least after I die, or at least that is the assumption I have come to hold.

>> No.8484575

the moment that this starts getting popular and the japanese start using 3d scanners to copy their figs, I'll buy one regardless of cost.
I can see it replacing some things, but many things are going to be a no go because a specialized factory is going to be able to print them far cheaper, and manufacturers get a far better deal on raw material than we will ever get on the spooled raw material.

Stuff that you only need 1 of? Maybe.
Stuff that you need 100s of, use very precise techniques or use specialized raw materials? No.
That includes things like cd/dvd/bdr, hard drives, etc isn't going to happen for a very very long time if ever.

Nope, we're used to this because nature have selected through milenia of evolution the most belicious, highly adaptative organisms to survive, we had always in ourselves the concept of: "if you lose something without obtaining a compensation you're getting penalized by the laws of existence, so you won't exist anymore" so only beings who avoid their destruction keep existing.

This forced the stoic nature to get pruned due to blah, blah, blag Darwin.
But being destroyed is nothing but peace for intelligent, not Darwinismic beings, I'd rather bet on they killing themselves rather than killing us.
Think about it, our gene scream: DONT FUCKING KILL YOURSELF, THAT'S NOT HOW ANIMAL WORKS,YOU SHOULD LIVE,FUCK,EAT AT ANY COST. Yet we still kill ourselves due to intelligence neglecting our very own nature.

Intelligence is not impronted with the desire to survive, hence kill anything that endanger your existence, only life is.

If the day when machines kill us comes is because we designed it specifically to happen.
