Draw every day.

Read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain first, then branch out to other books. Loomis's are among the best.

Sketch a lot of nonsense and try out different techniques quickly. Don't try to make incredible cityscapes or other advanced pieces because it will likely look really shitty, your confidence will go down the drain and you won't draw again for ages. The things you learn from the quick, as-you-go sketches help you more when you have little prior experience.

At first you will probably be intimidated and feel like it's no use, but once you gather a little portfolio and you see your work develop it'll get fun.

Keep in mind, however, I'm also still a beginner. It takes years to get good.

Boredom is a good catalyst for drawing. Draw whenever you don't have anything to do. It does not have to be pencil on paper. Just do anything related to drawing.

If you want to, invest in a cheapass drawing tablet. Does not have to be expensive, just something you can doodle on when you're wasting time in front of that screen.

Think of it as something you express yourself with at first, don't think of it as something you're working at. It'll make it less tedious. Hopefully.

For one, I can't even draw a consistent stick figure, two I get bored of things rather easy, so if I tried to draw it would go like

1. Practice/learn to draw
2. Draw a few things, get a bit better
3. Get bored, move on to another hobby

I've been wanting to start drawing for a while now, but at 26 years old, I really worry about not ever being able to produce anything worthwhile. I'm willing to put in the time, and I know it would take me probably a decade of constant practice to be able to make anything good, but part of me wonders if >>8474606 is right.

There are some things I think you can learn at any point in life, like languages and most academic subjects, but things like sports, drawing, singing, etc. don't seem that way.

Fun isn't the only goal though, we can't just draw dicks all day. This art rivalry thing won't work unless you're all willing to forgo your anonymity and hangout on websites you're not comfortable with. In my opinion pseudonymous posting is just as good as anonymous posting when it comes to protecting your identity.

Only one website as far as I know forces its users to use real identities and that's facebook. I had the misfortune of having to make an account there for a class project. Try entering a weird username in facebook and they'll automatically lock your account and force you to verify it by phone.

I practiced for years, and now I'm decent at best. Still can't handle anything more complicated than simple pen sketches. Just so you know, this'll only take you so far. Learning anatomy isn't copying what's in front of you. It's understanding how every single body part relates to each other.

Connect doesn't have a pen eraser. Fucking garbage if you ask me. Neither does Capture. Decent bamboo model starts at $199 called Create. It's pretty much better now compared to the old $199 model line. My old shit tablet is fucking tiny, designed awkwardly and cost $199.

I have poor control over my hands. I don't know why. My handwriting is absolutely horrible and very inconsistent; I sometimes have a hard time making some of the movements of certain letters. When I try to draw it comes out looking no better than anything I drew when I was 5 years old.

multiple layers make coloring very easy.

Learning is going faster when you are trying to do things you dont know. Like, try to shade without having a clue, or try to repeat some image or pose you dont have an idea about. Though, art and anatomy theory helps understanding as lot, without practicing you certainly wont advance.

This was more fun than I expected. For anyone wondering I was a huge gaiafag in 2006, and it devastated my art and creativity, or rather my enjoyment of both of those things in whatever measure you could judge them by. Afterwards was when I discovered MMOs and spent my time playing them instead of anything tangibly constructive. I'm trying to pick up the pencil again.
