So, what do you think about this game? I've been playing it and it was superb. The complexity, the aztec things... amazing.

I loved it, but whenever you look back on it, it's with a strong confirmation bias (?).
You remember all the great things about the game, all the things that creeped you out or that you found interesting, but you forget that 90% of the game was holding one arrow key or wondering how the fuck you get through stupid fucking mazes only to arrive at some stupid place where you're supposed to psychically know to leave and re-enter for a 1 in 8 chance of some event you NEED to progress because the faggots who made the game didn't know shit about game design and fuck a game that literally requires you to have a walkthrough just to be able to complete it kldfjlJKFLDSFJLKAJJFD

So yeah, I loved it.

I wouldn't call Yume Nikki a game, so much as it is an interactive art experience.

As a game, it's boring, uneventful, directionless, repetitive, and pointless. It has no story or characters or gameplay mechanics of note.

As an artistic piece, it's moving, thought-provoking, interesting, and subtle. The lack of story and characters is grounds to create them with imagination, and to see how you can fit it together mentally.

Madotsuki was raped by a car on the way to the Aztec Museum.

Where did all of XJR1250's Madotsuki images go? He only has 20 images on his Pixiv now, and they're mostly the lewd Sanae ones. He drew some really good Yume Nikki fan art that nobody had submitted to the *boorus.

Is it lost forever...? ;_;

It always amazes how artists can extrapolate scenarios from games like this. Like in >>8472840 how he drew Madotsuki and the Toriningen together and they're just having a meal and the Toriningen are having a laugh as usual and Madotsuki's slightly nervous and such. I mean that's not something that occurred in the game. The Toriningen were just characters who chased you and made a few noises. But this guy has created a whole scenario around that.
I don't know, maybe I'm just easily impressed.

>> No.8472869

>>8472862
I believe that little scenario came from that one desert, where the Toriningen had a spread laid out and were dancing. I'm guessing the guy who drew this figured that those Toriningen were more into dancing and eating instead of chasing lil' Madotsuki around.

I think it is. Like if I sit down now and try to come up with something, it's stupid or just a sequential rip-off of other things.
Like, "Madotsuki has the Witch effect on and she is sitting with a cat outside of a building." That took me a good 30 seconds to type and I kept deleting parts of it. To go ahead and flesh that idea out (decide on the building and the cat and the facial expressions and everything) would take me weeks or even months.

>> No.8472895

>>8472884
Maybe that's your problem, you say its stupid. What if it isn't? Whatever comes to mind, put it down. Decide later if it sucks or not, and even then? Keep it. Put it in a different pile. But no matter what comes to mind, put it down.
Then come back to it, think over your original idea and let it kind of evolve, for lack of a better word.

No, I mean it, I can't. If I went through with my cat idea and even if I was an amazing artist who could draw, I wouldn't know what to draw, if that makes sense. I can't form the picture in my head. I would have to look at a picture of a cat and just hope the angle works, then draw that cat. I might even have to copy and paste things. It would all have to be very formulaic otherwise I would not be able to do it.

I think you might be a bit too hard on yourself... I mean, we all have little ideas that we'd love to bring out. Most of us, I'm willing to bet, fall short on what we really see in our minds. That happens to me all the goddamn time, and I get so frustrated that I'll start throwing things away... before long, I have a mountain of crumpled up dreams. But you try and try again, hoping that with each attempt, you get closer.

Though, some of us have natural talent. And I hate them.

This is not a difficult concept. I am not being hard on myself, I literally cannot form these ideas in my head. Not without some sort of external influence that guides me. I might be able to follow a tutorial or whatever but I could never draw something from scratch. I cannot imagine pictures in my head from scratch or from a thought or written idea. This is a fact.

It sounds like you are harbouring a few good ideas though. Write them down. Hell, share them with 4chan, toss some things around. I'm sure every /jp/ regular has a serious lack of motivation (myself included) but actually having an idea is the first step. Just gradually take more steps forward. Invest in something to keep yourself going, e.g. buy a book or tablet or whatever it is you need, and convince yourself to carry on out of obligation for the money you've spent. Or start a blog or something and figuratively put pen-to-paper there. Write an announcement post and promise your readers something tangible, even if you're the only reader there is.

Yume Nikki was pretty much the reason I kept living. Was kind of a nihilist, and this game made me really think, and intrigued me. It was the only thing that sparked my interest a really long time. I ended up reading about fanfiction, theories, etc.

Now I'm in college, working part-time, and I'm working on a non-related fan game in sort of the same vein. Just have issues wondering how I'll code my game, and of course, while I'm artistically inclined, working in 16-bit is going to be complicated I think.

Tips? Programs on Ubuntu I can work with 16 bit?

Ohgoditsyouagain.
Learn C/C++ and SDL. There were some C++ tutorials by a guy called lazyfoo that I've seen a lot of people recommend (I read them but I can't remember them). SDL lets you use all sorts of whacky colour maps and such, so you can use "true" 16-bit colour and it'll even be faster than using, say, 24-bit colour (though not by any measurable amount because it's 2012).

If you want something a little more high-level to whet your appetite, try RPG Maker (it's what Yume Nikki was made with), Allegro or SFML.

What's the difference in 16 and 24 bit? I'm a total nub with those kinds of things. I just know the SNES/Genesis had limited color pallets.
Also what about RPG_Maker? The people at Uboachan, that is, the admin, is creating a superior, powerful RPG_Maker like program where you can make YN like games.

Also what do you mean by "true" 16-bit color? I think if you're the same past replier, you said there's around 16,000 diff colors.

FC world (8 bit with the house) is almost exactly inspired by Mother 0. Earthbound was Mother 2, in Japan. We never got Mother 1.

If you play 1 or 2, there's J2English translation patches which make them worth playing. Really reccomend them.

Yeah, could we hold a discussion on that? What's your theory on 16-bit art? I would plan to make a game on the comp. I have so much ideas, I end up staying up late and not getting any sleep. I just don't know if I have inspiration to do any because the ideas don't really seem to grow into something that would make me want to create a game out of them.

As for art, I'm not sure what to do. I know there's not much limits since 16 bit on a comp you can do almost anything. Idk. I'd possibly have a GUI at the bottom where you see the character's face in more detail and reactions to things. I plan for there to be text as well.

Sure, but I don't know much about it. My personal idea is that 16 bit is just a simpler "tool" to make games, so games in 16 bit have less potential. But if we are talking in a less professional level, this facility will be welcome.

I would suggest to keep it as simple as possible and evolving the project from this base, so it wont give you too much headaches.
