What

I'm no native German speaker, but the last time I checked it's definitely pronounced. Dunno if everyone writes it as ss on the internet nowadays though.

>> No.8464605

>>8464602
well it is technically not used any more. The germans just use ss instead of ß nowadays but it is still accepted in writing and such. It's just not required anymore.

It's interchangeable is what I mean. It will still count as correct if you write Fuß or Fuss.

But what I was asking earlier was is it the same case as the character ゐ. Is there another character that is replaced by it that people use or its just obsolete. If so why is it not used anymore?

>> No.8464642

>>8464605
I have a feeling it's just a case of people not bothering to write it properly anymore rather than it being "still accepted". It has the useful function of differentiating between long and short vowels.

Anyway, it's not the same. ゐ is used in neither written or spoken language modern. "Wi" is pronounced as "i". Same deal with ゑ, "we", pronounced as "e".

As for why, I forgot.

>> No.8464658

>>8464642

Also, I probably didn't forget as much as was never taught the reason. Might be nobody knows. Maybe it happened like with any language that loses a phoneme, the language just doesn't have a use for it anymore.

>> No.8464669

>>8464633
>It will still count as correct if you write Fuß or Fuss

But that's wrong, one is wrong and the other is right, the problem is that some retards who are responsible for making dictionaries keep changing it back and forth all the time so nobody knows which is the right one

ゐ represented [wi] in middle japanese, but sometime in the last thousand years changed to [i]. Up until the cabinet reformed kana usage in 1946, declaring ゐ obsolete, it continued to be used in spelling in much the same way that we still spell "rough" with a "gh" even though we now pronounce it with [f] rather than [x]. Likewise, ゑ used to represent [we] but now represents [e].

The [wi] and [we] sounds have since been reintroduced into modern japanese through loanwords but are written as うぃ and うぇ, respectively. Some older speakers still do not distinguish those from い and え.

So, Tewi is pronounced [tei].

I'm curious as to whether "Cirno" has an etymological basis or if ZUN just stuck random letters together.
