I think it's the best hat so far, then again I don't know anything about shadows. It looks 3-dimensional. The image would have been so much better overall if he/she made the white of the lineart layer transparent and put a color layer underneath it. That way they could have painted without worrying about the lineart.

I hope everyone is doing this. If you're using Sai, go to "Layer->Luminance to Transparency" on the lineart. Then make a new layer underneath it for coloring. This way you can paint underneath the lineart. Also, make sure that the color layer is selected while you're coloring obviously.

Don't be afraid to use strong shadows. Your coloring is smooth, but flat.

Also, a shadow doesn't necessarily mean the base color slightly darker. Shadows have their own colors too. Usually blue, depends on the lighting and the mood you want to give the picture though.

Thanks, the image is very illustrative.
I think I need a better grasp of shapes before doing that, though.
As you might notice, the shadowing is largely at random, and the strokes from the earliest images are very shaky, which made the soft shading I used afterwards seem way better.

I've got loads and loads of layers, and the hair is composed of one base layer, and then two for the soft shading.

Yeah it's good, the problem is you only added a lighter decolouration, now you need a darker decolouration the roots of the hair.
otherwise the only thing you are doing is make it lighter.

Thanks. CTRL + Alt + 2 selects all the white on Photoshop, and if you then lock the transparent pixels, you can simply ALT-Del so that the lines are filled in with black.

I use GIMP but it might work too since they have a lot of common hotkeys.
Also the hair looks much better now IMO.
If you want you can add 2 more colours and such, for mine i sued 5 colour gradients for hair, 5 for hat, 5 for eyes, 3 for skin, 5 for clothes 3 for sip/ hairbands. and 3 for hat eyes.

I think it looks way better now too, but very different.
The color-scheme is shamelessly stolen from >>8455880, and using this dark shading makes it feel very different.
Personally I find your kind of shading to be more akin to real paint that digital coloring. Of course, this is subjective, but I much prefer the digital method, but I can tell you that I'd never be able to color anything like this if it had been real paint, where your style should make it easy for you to "port" the drawing to a painting.
If I were to color this from scratch, I'd use a larger brush, with more a more defined shape (Like in the hat, not the hair), and with a low opacity.
That way I can easily add up different shades.

Yeah I guess so, I normally draw in paper and paint, i had never painted with oils though so this is new to me. But I get what you are saying, painting this with a touchpad has been a pain though, I wish I had at least a mouse or a tablet, thugh people says that getting used tot he tablet from paper and pen is hard.

Also i changed the background a little and some shadows.

I got my tablet this christmas.
This is the first I've used it for real, and it's pretty different from pen and paper, since the eye-hand coordination is very different.
But I think I'll get used to it eventually.

Personally I use Photoshop CS5.
I'd like to be able to use SAI better, as it seems very geared towards drawing sketching and coloring, where Photoshop is image manipulation.
Corel Painter seems fun if you're into "paintings".
I'm currently trying to make a vector in Adobe Illustrator (And Inkscape), but it's a lot different compared to SAI, and I'm not really friends with the hotkeys and beizer curves yet.
