I really do think ZUN's earlier art style had a nice charm to it, especially with the hair. The hair always looked really great. I don't like it as much in the newer games.

You make it sound as though he drew things to please people.

ZUN makes these games because he enjoys them. It's not about pleasing people, but pleasing him self.

The only reason why his art has gotten better over the years is because he has been able to refine his style. It has nothing to do with objective improvement.

He's right though. The art is terrible.
But that's okay. It is charming, I agree. But it's still terrible. The scribble my nephew drew today looked like shit. But it was cute. That's what ZUN's art's like.
I hate people who defend it as good because it undermines the things ZUN is actually good at, like music and programming.
