I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping GundamAce from even actively trying to get his translation officially released is the fact that the license lies by a different company (Cyberfront) than the original company (KID) and the original staff probably wouldn't see any of the money "earned" with it. If he gets such an offer for I/O (the rights to which still lie by the original developer, Regista) I doubt he'd refuse.

GundamAce here.

No, I have no intention of selling Never7, I/O, or 12Riven to JAST or any other company at this time. Especially not Never7, given all the additions and programming changes me and the hacker have put into this version (the patch will include things only included in the PSP version, and we fixed around some things, such as the fact you no longer need a CD to play the game's BGM. We will also be having a few more additions from other versions). I am not seeking to make any money off of my translations, nor will I actively offer to sell my translations to any company. All I want is for the rest of the Infinity series and related games to see the light of day in English (except Code_18. That can rot, for all I care). That's all that matters to me.

However, I still stand by Blick Winkel's decision for Steins;Gate. Personally, I don't mind if Steins;Gate gets an official release, and I certainly don't mind waiting. Patience is always an important part of the VN translation scene, so I quite frankly don't see what the problem is.

Look, I can understand that some of you may be concerned, what with the recently announced partnership between me and Blick Winkel, and may be under the misunderstanding that this has influenced me in some way. But I've said it before and I'll say it again- our partnership has no impact whatsoever on the Never7 translation project. And as he's said, I'm the one responsible for the decisions regarding the management of the translation. I will say it once more as an official declaration so that you all understand. No, I will not be actively seeking to make any money off of my translations, and intend on working as a fan-translator until my goal has been accomplished.

That's all I want you to understand.

>>8451540
I would rather you not think of me as a liar. I'd like to think that in the last year or so of translating, I've been forthright and honest about everything I'd do regarding the translations of my projects. If anything indeed changes in the scheme of things, I would be sure to inform all of you unless there were some circumstance that prevented me from doing so.

However, in light of the Steins;Gate incident, I can see why you and a large number of people would believe that anyone associated with Blick Winkel could be considered untrustworthy due to your views on the matter.

This isn't about you receiving payment, this is about the project becoming an official localization - it's happened without payment before. Are there any conditions (JAST/MG being interested? (Don't misunderstand, I would fully support an official I/O localization. But some people would be seriously offended if you did such a thing without announcement at the very start of the project, especially after your >>8451540 post.)

You're misunderstanding again. As I've mentioned above, I'm not in it for the money, just for the chance to translate the games I love and to have them out in English. Let me try to be more specific- I would sell the translation to them if and only if they already had a license with Regista. If they didn't have a deal with them, then I wouldn't sell it to them. Not unless I had some affirmation that the deal was solid too. I wish you good luck and good fortune in your future endeavors with BlickWinkel, and I hope that the community doesn't continue to blow certain events out of proportion to the point that it effects your projects.

I'm tired of people assuming I dropped the project, or impersonating me for that matter. I've been working on Dive1 at a steady pace for a few months now, and it should be ready by mid 2012. I have one route finished, but I'll abstain from releasing partial patches before I get someone I thrust to quality check.

There have been several reasons for the lack of progress and updates, but I won't make any excuses because I don't owe any. I will finish the translation of Dive1 because I had both already started it and promised I'd finish it, but I don't think I'll be doing Dive2. I've talked to Ixrec about it and he says he'll continue the series if he's convinced with my work. I think he's likely to redo the whole thing, but I don't personally care. So yes, you'll have your translated game, either by my hand or Ixrec's.

Want to know how fucking incompetent and useless Koto is? I don't fucking know what the status is on Sora route, and I was fucking translating it. I kept asking him, over and over, to tell me what lines he had actually finished, since I was told I only needed to do the first (roughly) half of the route.

For all I know, Koto's contribution to it has evaporated, since I can't get *anything* out of him. Unless someone can convince him to put up the 4-5k lines he did, they'll have to be redone.

And if you're interested in translating YnS, it would probably be best to get in contact with the guys at trjr.wordpress.com. I think the problem with the VN scene is the people involved with the translations

With things like published J-RPGs the people working on the translations probably have vastly greater experience with the Japanese language compared to people working on VNs on the side. Yeah, actually, if the translation he did for Sora's route was done before the little bit of work he did on Sorairo(around February of 2011), and I'm pretty sure it was, then it might need to be redone anyway. Japanese: Easy as fuck grammar but have to learn 2000+ characters.

True but also not. The rules are easy, but so much of it is contextual that the same sentence could mean a ton of different things since the objects and subjects are omitted. It's probably more natural for a native romance language speaker since they also omit pronouns, but thinking like that for a native English speaker can be extremely hard since that's not how our language works at all.

After that there are lots of different ways to go about it. What I planned on doing was getting down the basic grammar and a few important kanji, then to try to go through some easier VNs with aid of a dictionary and hope to pick up as much as I could as I went. SPANISH IS FUCKING EASY COMPARED TO JAPANESE. BETTER THAN HALF THE WORDS ARE THE EXACT SAME, THE SENTENCE ORDER IS LARGELY THE SAME, THE GRAMMAR IS LARGELY THE SAME, MUCH MORE OF THE CULTURE IS SHARED, ETC. ETC.

Spanish literally reads like fucked up English. If you seriously think it's anywhere near as hard as Japanese, you're fucking high. Japanese is easier to learn for Spanish speakers, both phonetically and grammatically. This is widely accepted. However, in my opinion there is almost a genetic predisposition to be able to fluently speak multiple languages at the near-native level. I've seen people who've studied French for years in an academic setting have worse pronunciation than the beginners who happen to "get" French pronunciation. Same thing with Japanese, and in fact any language. You either "get" it, or you don't, and it'll end up sounding very forced.

That's why many beginner's French classes don't start you off right away with pronunciation or grammar. Hell, most instructors even advise against getting a F-E dictionary because it's not really helpful if you don't "get" the language.

Also fan translators are poseurs (I think I said this like, 3x today in 3 different threads). People who are serious about translating need a wider scope of material to translate than manga and anime. It really ticks me off when the so-called "pros" like Daiz and his crew preach about his idea of translations on /a/ as if it were gospel, and that there MUST BE one way to do all translations, and everything is WRONG. 8thsin probably doesn't even have a strong Japanese background, he thinks karuta is hard to understand. They're fucking idealists who probably have never translated anything in the professional capacity. Because if they did, they wouldn't be in fan translation.

That is my personal opinion as a grad linguistics student who has intern'ed at an interpreter agency.

TLDR

Anybody can learn a language, shit is easy if you're committed. What everybody may not be able to obtain is the ability to "get" the language, an intrinsic understanding of the language-- to be able to re-wire your brain to think in that language, rather than to think about it in your native language first, then translating it.

Nobody said Spanish is hard except for that Spanish dude. Everybody wants to think that their native language is hard.

Also, 100% of the time, when somebody says "X language is easy," they're either bullshitting, or they suck. I'm not the guy you're responding to, but I think he's right to some degree. Nearly anyone can become fluent in a language given enough time and effort. Of course, I guess it just depends on what you mean by fluency. I agree with you that speaking is one of the hardest things to get right, especially if it's a language that has sounds that aren't used in your native language. However, of those interpreters you mention that can't speak well enough to satisfy a native speaker, how many of them have truly put in the time and effort to be able to speak properly?

To give an example, I've been studying Japanese off and on for the past couple years, and my reading, writing, and hearing abilities have skyrocketed, but my speaking ability is probably about the same as when I started. It's just a lot easier to do the other things. Learning how to speak properly usually means carefully practicing, listening to and mimicking native speakers, and possibly having a native speaker help correct your mistakes. It's a lot harder to do that than it is to sit there and memorize 5 kanji or what have you.

You are right that some people just "get it" when it comes to pronunciation. I've met people like that. But I still think if someone truly put in the effort, they could speak well enough that it wouldn't be jarring to a native speaker. Think about actors who learn how to speak different accents or languages for their roles: were all of those actors somehow gifted with the ability to pronounce things properly?

I know this is just speculation, but those are my thoughts on the matter.

Just because you’re near the water, that doesn’t mean you’re taking a bath — one must actually enter the tub. You will find that these people continue to mostly/only read books, watch movies, work with and talk to people in their primary/native language. There are many Western men married to Japanese women, with Japanese-speaking Eurasian children, who know no Japanese beyond the basics. Many first-generation Chinese immigrants in the US may have lived there for decades, yet can barely speak English. This is called a "gaijin bubble". You see that he's an interpreter, but how often does he have normal conversations with Japanese people outside of work? Translating is different from comprehending; it's a different approach.

Unless you can attest that he was speaking, reading, and comprehending real Japanese every day then "working in Japan" is no different than, for example, "working in America and being a fansubber". If one is comprehending and speaking Japanese with natives every day he won't just sound *like* them he will *be* them; a Japanese speaker. This is how the mind works. It is a fundamental truth.

If one practices Japanese every day he will get it. Nothing can stop this. There is no magic involved. There is no "some people are special". They're not.

>Simply listening to a new language sets up the structures in the brain required to learn the words.
>And the way to build those neural structures is by listening

>And a few studies suggest that disfluency works well as a prompt to get people to think carefully and catch mistakes. Alter and Oppenheimer found that using a more difficult font can get students to do better on the Cognitive Reaction Test, a three-question test that usually trips up people answering intuitively. In another study, they found that disfluency also led people to think more abstractly. Schwarz and Song found that a difficult font can dramatically increase the number of people who correctly respond to the question, “How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark?” (The answer is “none” - Moses wasn’t on the Ark.)

Just give up on trying to debate this. My statement

is not a hypothesis that needs to be refuted. I certainly won't use it as a premise to conduct research. It was just a casual statement, and as an opinion of a polygot who had experience with polygots of many different backgrounds.

YOU'RE the one going on about how I'm being fallacious, and that you don't need to prove anything. Well no shit, it would be fallacious if I were arguing my case for it. But I'm not, I'm just saying that "I think some people will never get it."

If you have a problem with it, say something to back it up. Don't be a faggot who says "NOPE NOPE NOPE, BURDEN OF PROOF IS ON YOU, I DON'T HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING."

Not the guy you're arguing, but I can use this phrase to make a statement that if you listen to Arabic radio long enough, you'll eventually pick up on it.

It doesn't really prove anything, much less the guy's argument that not everybody can acquire native fluency in a language.

I'm sure everybody has the ability to learn a new language, like I've said.

Pronunciation on the other hand, has nothing to do with learning words. I'm not very familiar with the psychological aspect, but oral speech works parts of the brain different from cognitive reasoning.

Not it doesn't bro. It just means that a retard can eventually learn what 2+2 is.

Also, what makes you think I'm a samefag? There are 3 guys 'against' you, which you accused of proxying. As if anybody is autistic enough to do that.

My two cents on this.
I started Japanese at college a month ago (classes everyday), mostly to help my speaking because it was pretty lacking when compared to other areas, but decided to start from zero anyway.

False.

>When we are trying to learn new foreign words we are faced with sounds for which we may have absolutely no neural representation. A student trying to learn a foreign language may have few pre-existing neural structures to build on in order to remember the words

Lots of exposure modifies the brain in a way to output properly.

>>8467836

It does by definition; this is called "you in denial".

But they're not, everyone else is going at a steady pace. Sure, there are others that still can't tell the difference between ツand シ or ソ and ン at first sight, but nobody is as bad as her.

I guess retards are gonna retard wherever they try to learn, but it's not like they absolutely can't learn.

I'm going to stop posting. It's obvious that I've hurt your feelings or something (are you Daiz?). You can accuse me all you want for admitting defeat, but I've been on the internet long enough to simply not give a shit, kid. Afterall, I'm the one with a scroll, an internship at a prestigious agency, and you're some language guru who believes that having an academic background means absolute shit (in which you're right, if all you care about is becoming a translator monkey working for 5cents a word at some Chinese agency).

If I knew that I were going to be offending a formidable debater such as you, I still would have made haphazard comments like the cognitive dissonance man (pic related) because only people like you would go out of their way to argue with an anonymous person on the internet. No harm done, people like you will exist regardless, and meanwhile, people like me don't give a shit. I won't get credits for arguing with you.

>You don't need a proxy to samefag on an Anonymous board

I didn't even know that. Yet here you are, accusing me of samefagging on an anonymous board. Why don't you report this thread and ask a mod whether I was samefagging the other two posters?

One last comment:

>Classes are shit for learning language.

That's also fallacious reasoning regardless of how you derived this conclusion. You can neither prove nor disprove this statement, but I'm not going to hawk down on you for offending my philosophy, because I'm not out to change anybody's opinions on anything.

My opinion on classes is that when supplemented by conversation courses and lots of homework, it's a better way to learn a language than self-study.

I'm not in 'merrica and I didn't even know you could take Japanese on high school. In any case, the classes haven't been bad so far, maybe a little slow but still way faster than I expected them.

And they've done wonders for my calligraphy. God damn it did I write like shit.

Brb, making fallacious statements to further infuriate you:

- black people cause crime
- colonialism is bad
- learning a new language in an organized class setting is superior to learning by yourself with absolutely no guidance
- you need a university education to secure a middle class life
- not everybody can "get" a language

Now you're the one making a statement about a few people in here being a collective samefag. The burden of proof lies on you to prove it.

Anyway, your argument

>Lots of exposure modifies the brain in a way to output properly.

All it tells us is that the brain adapts to languages. It doesn't describe the extent of the adaptation, which I believe was the original argument.
