Real time battle system like in the Tales series. And the affection system from certain Tales games as well. It never goes as far as dating or whatever, but depending on certain dialogue options chosen throughout the game, you get special endings with certain characters.

"Xenoblade is the best JRPG of this generation at the least; it may be the best I've ever played, period. This is the game that Square Enix has been trying to make for the last ten years and failing every time. It's the game that the last two Final Fantasies wish they were. It has well written, realistic (especially for a JRPG) characters, a story that seems very down to earth and relate-able but at the same time manages to surprise at multiple turns, a combat system that takes the best aspects of MMO's and never really lets you get bored, and a quest system that any new RPG coming out should adopt immediately. It has taken most, if not all the tedium out of the genre while keeping all the fun (and numbers) intact. It's not without its weaknesses but they are so minor and so cosmetic I'm not even sure every player will notice them. For the record, I put nearly 110 hours into the game before I beat it - none of it was grinding either. Just exploring and finding shit and expanding the story through optional cut-scenes between characters and extra quests. The best part is you can skip all of that extra stuff and still have just as much fun with the game. Xenoblade is literally as little or as much as you make of it. Play this game."

Because it's designed to be challenging? If you can freely grind to increase your character's strength, then all hurdles in a game can easily be bypassed. I thought Fire Emblem didn't allow grinding (or it was limited, at least), so I thought there may have been more games like that.

there are games where all "grinding" will not help you much because strategy is much more important. Fire Emblem is like that. (I recommend 7 as the first game if you never played one. 4 Is the best game though.)

Also the touhou fan RPG GoS is very strategy-based.

Of course, that made it terribly difficult to beat the latter dawn brigade chapters on hard mode, what with only have three usable units. Especially during the last chapter when you have to hold off Ike's attack in that one fort.

Vika, the stoner raven chick. Man, I love her. I hate how she was so utterly unusable. You get her in Part One, for three chapters. Then next time you get her it's in Part Four, near the end. Unless you've been saving BEXP, she has no use whatsoever. And even after pumping her full with it, she's still rather useless. A terrible loss because I love her art.

If by rgn you mean RNG, then yeah it is still random. But to me, it felt like the stat weights were much heavier for appropriate classes. For example, to me it felt like Mage classes only had a 10% or less chance to get a point of Str on level up.
And besides, a LITTLE bit of Str is okay on even Mage classes for the more powerful, heavier tomes. Of course, Illyana goes too far with that and her stat weight for Str is way too high, but I love her too much to not have used her anyway.

Yes, they do have random stat gains (mostly), but you can abuse BEXP and soft resets in FE9 to usually avoid that, and you can abuse BEXP on characters with maxed stats in 10 as well, due to how they tried to fix BEXP abuse from FE9.

Problem is, growths don't really mean shit when you'll only level her up three or four times. After that it's BEXP, which grants you a guaranteed bonus in 3 stats, but randomly. So you'll only experience those nice growths two to four times, other than that, it's twiddling your thumbs as you pump her full of BEXP.
Don't get me wrong, I love Vika. Used her in Endgame one or two times, but she really pales in comparison to other units. It's ridiculous to have the best chick only be available in 5 or so chapters.

It's not easy, of course, and I've only done that on regular difficulty. On hard mode I doubt that it would be a viable option.

So has anyone on /jp/ beaten Primevil without cheating?

I used a guide that showed what all of his moves would be up until turn 60 if your team had only one buff active and stuff like that. And it was still very difficult.

I can't imagine not cheating... I mean, are you just suppose to guess when when Primevil is about to use his thunder/frost/fire kill everyone attacks, so that your paladin can use a corresponding block? Or when he's about to use his automatic kill everyone attack, so you can have resurrection ready on one character?

And then he has immunity spells that need to be dispelled, and I think that he heals himself, and all of those status ailments... fuck's sake.

And does anyone have any idea what picture I'm talking about here? I can't find it anywhere.

New Year's resolution was to work through my backlog of anything I've legitimately spent money on. Started with Vagrant Story, but gave up after about 7 hours of pure torture. Opted to send it to a friend that wanted it to get it out of my backlog. Interesting story, though. I need to find a decent LP for it.

Starting with my PSX games, so I've got Thousand Arms after I finish Grandia.

FE10 is a fun game, and it can be pretty hard, but the story is fucking stupid.

Even for an FE game, I mean.

And the way the game is organized into segments, and you can only use certain units in certain segments, is just awful.

I started playing Chrono Trigger since I never played it when I had my SNES. It was good until my keyboard crapped out on me. It's difficult to play with an on-screen keyboard, as I'm sure you can imagine. I think I'll purchase a PS3 controller to play with. The game was pretty good. Hahaha! Where do you want me to start?

The entire world trains kids for war and throws them into battlefields for their exams.
The protagonist is an anti-social wannabe who doesn't tell his friends to fuck off only when you have a choice for it. After several hours, it gets annoying.
TWEEST!
And this is want I remember about it from when I played on 1998.

Due to the junction system and that everything depends on the amount of magic that each character has, you can spend hours doing Draw until everyone has complete sets of magic and because of that, you easily reach Lv.99 before you even get Ifrit, which leads to all the monsters having high level magics right at the beginning of the game.

And after you get Aura and Meltdown/Doomtrain, the only strategy that you will need for the bosses is Aura->Meltdown/Doomtrain->Renzokuken ad infinitum. When you fight Omega, if you die before you can do anything to it, you only need to spam Hero Drinks and repeat the previous strategy.

I only spoiled it because I'm jealous that there will be people who get to play through the game without knowing it.

Can't believe this thread is still here.

Finished my run of Grandia, despite the game trying to freeze up at the Zil Padon destruction cutscene (it figures my disc would be scratched that far into the game). Finished at around 65 hours. Taking a break to watch Aquarion and do the PSO2 second alpha before I start Thousand Arms. I'll be doing Rhapsody after that and then... probably moving on to my Gamecube list before moving to my larger PS2 backlog.

'Bout how long should I be expecting on Thousand Arms, you think? I'm kind of looking forward to getting to Tales of Symphonia as soon as I can.

You have to buy them, Schiavona (Long Sword) and Morglay (Two Handed Sword) are some of the best shop weapons. You can also buy Garal weapons in Uso, and Kjar Bow in Kjaraht/North Estamir if I am not mistaken, the weapons are expensive though.

If you want better weapons, you have to forge metals onto them, but that makes them near impossible to repair unless you use the same metal you forge them with.

If you see a red text during the forging process, it's a harmonic metal, which means the weapon will advance in level after you use techs that consume Weapon Durability. If you need metal, go to Bayre Plateau, Aurefont, or the underwater caverns of Crystal lake and mine ore.

dunno how you might feel about the stories but I can list some games you can't grind in.

Unlimited SaGa
Last Remnant
Romancing SaGa
Lost Odyssey
Chrono Cross
Suikoden

Off the top of my head. Also several SaGa games get harder as you grind since enemies scale with your stats. You need to fight some to fight bosses but if you level enough for dullahans and such to start appearing you're in for a world of hurt.

Also why isn't this on /v/?

>> No.8478187

>>8478181
...Uh, you can grind in most of those.

>> No.8478191

Lost odyssey and suikoden use scaling exp. You can grind but you would need 1000 fights per level.

chrono cross gives you stats after every boss, you cannot grind.

Last remnant and romancing SaGa PS2 use the BR system. Trying to grind in the usual sense will cause you to not gain stats or get shit stats while the enemies jump up past you and bosses wreck your shit. You can grind in very specific ways in TLR but anybody not familiar with the game won't figure that out.

Unlimited SaGa has your stats determined by the panels you get after a quest. fighting serves no purpose other than leveling magic and getting items, and the more you fight some types of monsters the opposite grow in power.

So how exactly can you grind in these?

So fighting shitty monsters, gaining no stats and inflating your BR is grinding?

You know your BR isn't your character level right

>> No.8478207

>>8478198
It's a poor question in the first place. You can grind in anything where any act that can be done indefinitely yields reward every time. I don't know if he meant grinding for exp or not.

>> No.8478219

>>8478198
Diminishing returns are still returns, champ. Are you unfamiliar with what grinding actually is? Taking forever to get an inconsequential gain is very much grinding. By your definitions, very few SRPGs have grinding because the gains are so minor for the effort required. Some RPGs using geometrically increasing experience requirements to control progression, some use progressively lowering experience rewarded. It's the exact same principle.

>>8462964
Oh wow. Someone that actually knows about it and the translation? I thought it was just a few people on a forum and a handful of others.

It's a good game. However know that you're in for a very frustrating, completely bullshit game, but I like how many classes there are, and the branching story paths add replayability.

There are four story paths: Light (generic), Imperial, Independent, Chaos/Dark. From your screenshot it looks like you're on, well, not Light. I'm not sure exactly which that is.

Get shit stats means your stats remain the same. BR is not your level. BR is not your stats. BR is only a reflection of how many fights you're completed.

If you're referring to people actually fighting 1000 battles to level once they hit the 1 exp limit I suppose it's possible. If they spent a few years doing it

>Is Last Remnant any good? I've heard so many different opinions.

Last Remnant is alright, although most people think the main character is a total idiot. The PC version is the definitive version, with a whole lot of tweaks (like no requirement to use the stunted generic members) and some new content. It can feel a little hands off at times, since characters don't always have the right option available for them and sometimes all your options can be condensed into "keep attacking" and "get out of deadlock".

There's one event that earns my ire (or at least annoyance), because it's just so utterly pointless. You can probably guess what it is if you've already played the game before.

You may want to wait for a (probably Steam) sale regardless.

Anyone care recommend any "easy"(=doesn't require much grinding) jrpgs with good story. I've played all final fantasies before 10, Suikodens, Valkyrie Chronicles and Dragon Quests. I like to play jrgs because of their Japanese styled stories but I really dislike time consuming grinding. Thats why I mostly just read VNs.

I find it quite hilarious that /jp/ is infinitely better at discussing games than /v/ is. That place is a shithole, only good during the late night/early morning period.

Is it because /jp/'s users are significantly older?

Nowadays I only bother with RPGs that at least allow me to steer the story in the direction I want. Sadly, in the last five years not a whole lot of RPGs from both sides of the world managed to pull that off.

Luckily, there's still this. Feb 28, all of my hype.
