Black Lotus isn't even that "powerful". I mean look at something like Dark Ritual which is similar.
It can just be abused easily because they had no idea what they were doing back then. That's why it's not tournament legal and why it's so rare, and thus very expensive.
Plenty of modern cards can be abused in the same way too. Like there are infinite damage combos out there, even now.

That works too, but I use Proteus because Progenitus is the only creature in the deck. It only fails on me if I get to actually draw him, but that only causes delays.

Both of you guys are right. Power creatures are usually gimmicky in the sense that you need to build a setup around them. Proteus used to work. Also you always have ramping, there are tons of ways. I was pretty succesful using Shape Anew to sacrifice an artefact in order to bring out Blightsteel Collosus. I used it in FNM twice, both times got 2/3 victories.

Sadly I couldn't bring it into standard again because preordain was amazing. Oh well, it's still the deck I enjoyed the most. Here's a link to it if anyone wants to take a peek : http://deckbox.org/sets/88740

That's.. actually 7 mana for a 6/6 flying prored, assuming she has the typical creature sunburst, which is usually used in decks with artifact mana. Could bring her even higher with all five colors.
Not like I would ever even dream of sacrificing my waifu but that's actually not that horrible of a card, you could lock the other person down entirely if they aren't generating all their mana through artifacts. Pretty late, though. There are other options that do the same thing faster. Seven mana to blow up all lands is pretty poor. Artifact control ain't bad though, but again she's too expensive to play in the current M:TG state.
