Several things happened. Most of our user base is gone, the levelheaded sensible people left a long time ago.

What was left were the hotblooded, the desperate, and those too autistic to handle the change to another site.

From there, either they were forced to leave as things continued to plummet, they adapted into the very shitposters themselves either believing they would make the board unsusuable and the shitposters would leave, or that they thought they were shitposting ironically. In the end the result was the same, there were even more people shitposting.

More people left, so more outsiders felt at home, so more of them came.

Now only a few regulars are left, none of them are well adjusted, no one knows where to go, and every project for a /jp/ replacement is a dud becuase most of them are started by the very shitpsoters themselves who then spam the fuck out of the board over thier new site.

The best are gone, we're outnumbered, and our culture has been trampled. Basically, give up, make a circlejerk on irc, or adapt.

This really got out of hand in mid 2010, then when AoC left some people saw that as the last straw and left, shitposters jumped up out of spite, and things got worse making more people leave. Furthermore, some people left becuase of now established /jp/ refuges on other sites. Basically they decided that posting on a board overran by shit wasn't worth their time. Other people thought we'd get a new janitor and that they were overreacting.

As a board, we used to be pretty close. But once hostility became the normal attitude for posters here people stopped liking what originally made them feel at home here. I know we got hostile to remove the invaders and all that, but that's how it is.

Since the new year I've been reporting and hiding threads non-stop. It's actually quite tiring and tedious (no thanks to captchas and report delays) and I have found myself reporting more threads and posts and finding I've had very little time to actually post in threads relevent to my interest. Moderation is a cure for the symptoms, not a cure for the condition. The problem isn't the shitposts, it's the shitposters. Through moderation you can try to remove the shitposts, but as the amount of shitposters increases it keeps becoming worse, and no amount of moderation can keep up with it.

It's not a problem of age; the only one you're fooling with your '30-40' age range is yourself. Even back in 2008 and 2009, the posters were mainly in the '15-25' age range. It is a problem of becoming more mainstream.

Remember how even /b/ used to be a decent board when 4chan was still new? New posters came in, trampled on the original board culture, and the posters moved to other boards. As /b/ started to reach its saturation point, the posters flooded to the boards closest to it. This process repeats endlessly until every community in a collection of communities is flooded with newbies and the original culture is lost. This isn't just a problem with 4chan, it even happens with the internet in general; just look up 'Eternal September'. Early adopters build a community culture, which is then slowly degraded as new people join. It's a disease without cure, and our only option is to escape to another community that has not been infected yet until that gets ruined as well.
