Hey /jp/, I've been a lurker here for a bit. I wouldn't call myself a /jp/ member, but I enjoy the board thoroughly. So I got a question now..

Should I take a Japanese language course at college or just teach myself?

I love playing VN games and a lot ones I want to play haven't been or wont' be released in English. Learning how to read the language would be great cause it could expand further than visual novels. I kinda also would like to visit Japan one day for vacation and speaking the local language would be so helpful.

For the /jp/ members that know Japanese how did you learn? From school or online videos or Rosetta stone? Thanks!

Don't ever use Rosetta stone, look up VNDB, stop making us spoon feed you and conquer Japan.

That's a pretty bad idea dude, so No.

Taking some Japanese classes formed an excellent basis for me to later build upon in my self study. However I can only speak to my own experience with my college's Japanese program. I'm not going to be like those people who unilaterally write off all Japanese classes because of their own limited experience (assuming they even tried classes at all).

Hi, OP.

I think it'd be best for all of us if you'd just use the archive to search for this kind of stuff. You see, we get these kinds of threads all the time. You'll find the answer in no time if you just use the search function.

The reason most people here write off japanese classes is that you don't need professional help to teach yourself the alphabets, most kanjis, basic grammar and a small vocabulary list, which is what a few years of japanese class will teach you.
And making conversation is useless for most of us.

I'm sorry then for making a cliche thread. Thank you for your alternative answer, I appreciate it!

I will take this to heart. Thank you for your input!
