What other Japanese shootan' games (either commercial or doujin) do you like besides Touhou?

Let's enjoy and discuss the Jappo shootan' genre.

Fanarts and nicovideo links welcome.

Well, you're bitter over something silly. I don't see how the sprite makes a difference in the gameplay experience, espeically with a shooting game.

Now with your Metal Gear example, it would have probably been different if Snake Solid was a woman, since it's a plot-heavy series. Things would have obviously been different there.

But that's comparing apples and oranges.

Hey, you can't really compare the two. In bullet hell games, all you see is a static sprite shooting bullets. I don't give a shit what the sprite looks like.

You're comparing MGS, a series involving the control and interaction with the environment in 3 dimensions and a strengthened connection with the character through total control of him, with these shooting games, which are 2 dimensional and lack any sort of interaction short of moving them back, forwards, and side to side while shooting.

Huh. I suppose a few of us (well, me at least) mainly remember the music by association with a certain character. Yeah, I know your views about the whole doujin scene, but I do enjoy some of the portrayals of the characters and some of the arrangements that I think fit with the character better. Since you're plainly not as much of a fan of the characters, I guess it's easy to see why you'd view the songs as unmemorable.

Then I'm stuck there.

The absolute best response I can think of is that their character designs somehow can fit the theme, and to a VERY broad respect, I can somewhat understand that, but the character design (note, design, not artstyle) in Touhou isn't exactly a pinnacle of varied meanings and depth.

So, yeah, infinite loop. Could just be confirmation bias.
