I recently started playing on a low rate (2x) UK based Ragnarok Online private server.
The population is low as fuck and I've been in no parties or had any communication with any of the other players (most of which are AFK vendors).
The only thing that's keeping me playing is the fact that I've obtained like 6 or 7 cards and my swordsman is only level 31.

As far as I know the official RO servers (which are now F2P) have no pay-to-win solutions. You usually only find that kind of thing on private servers with "donations".

There's a 40 hour (in game time) Tera trial going on right now for new accounts, so I and a few others have been playing that. The price also went down to ￥2000 per month, so I'm fairly heavily considering buying another month and getting my 48 Archer to endgame.

Otherwise, I bought L4D2 and Serious Sam HD in the Steam sales. I've been playing those a bit too.

Although it is going to take a while to memorize the card system.

If you try GvG, then it has a pretty hard learning curve.

You should go to the official server which is free to play. You can advance all the way up without paying so it is quite unlike other free to play servers. playragnarok com

There are lots of people on the official F2P and an active economy. Lots of events go on all the time in which lower level chars like yours can participate, have fun, and benefit. The player-run info site for it is at:

You do not have to P2W (pay to win) on official servers. In fact, that is considered ANATHEMA over there and the playerbase often mocks the private servers because they collect "donations" and when those slow down, they close the server and open a new one under a different name. That's because their "donations" occur mostly when lots of low-level people are struggling to level up using P2W. Thus, those servers don't have longevity for your chars.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean it is legal. That is part of why it is a RPG because like in life, you can do lots of things (and get away with it) but that doesn't make it legal. But I have to agree that they do not care about their players. As I posted above in the thread, I had played legitimately for about 2 months with a couple of friends, both of which used windower with multiple plugins. I hadn't even used that, let alone the thing the GM banned me for. In about 10 years of playing MMORPGs on and off, that was the first time I had ever received a ban.

Sounds unbelievable, I know. I couldn't believe it either when it happened.
After appealing as honestly and truthfully as I could, I still didn't get my account back. I simply refuse to trust their judgement from now on.
And yeah, it's an RPG because it's like real life: you can get punished for doing nothing wrong/ being framed for crimes you never committed.

There were no rules about the flaw, the company released no info regarding it and let it go on for months. Also, the large majority of the players banned were NA or at least non-JP. SE is VERY racist when it comes to things like this and basically give JP players a pass for all kinds of shit. A lot of the people who had their characters banned for long time players for years and year and their toons were worth thousands of dollars with countless time logged in to the game. What they did with the bans was basically wipe the top 5% of all non-JP players off the servers One guy, the top player for all worlds who was banned, his character was worth tens of thousands of dollars. I know that doesn't make a difference but when you put in a very large amount of time in a game like that just to have your character wiped for something that was basically the devs fault is shitty.

When I played everyone used widower with plugins if you played on the PC, it just wasn't a big deal and makes a huge improvement to the game. It was never really considered cheating and you were limiting yourself by not using it. Hell, I even ran scripts overnight to cap shitty skills like summoning and bard songs, though I never actualy ran bots myself.

Thing was, a lot of the people who actually did bot never got caught for it, even though it was well know who, what linkshells and what characters did. It was so much of a problem that you HAD to bot yourself if you were in any kind of competitive endgame shell and wanted to have a chance at pretty much anything. True, I might have been limiting myself and it was universally agreed on being "safe" to use by the player community but using 3rd party tools is against the Terms of Service and I am vehemently against going against ToS on online games.

It's probably because of this characteristic of mine that I was hit so hard by the ban I had received.

For those who were interested in playing iRO, I left my patch client to run overnight and I'm now about to pick a server.

I'm going to make a character on both Yggdrasil and Valkyrie since I have no idea whether people went ahead and made characters already.

Those were indeed good times.
All the areas have been remade so grinding there is more difficult now, nobody ever bothers to make parties there anymore.
I imagine that finding grind places is still possibe, you'd just have to get people to team up with you there somehow.
But there are quests up to level 200 or something now so maybe that's why nobody is grinding anymore

They are revamping the first areas (Desert Beach, Megalopolis, Caballa, etc.) and making the quests a lot better in terms of exp, but last time I played the revamp stopped at Oops Wharf; after that it was all the old quests which involved digging and digging and digging, not to mention the nerfed drops in Vamp Castle; 1%~ drop rate of an item and you need 25 just for 1 quest? Very annoying.

And I meant lower level places, like path to oops or bugbears.

Like I said bugbears is alot more difficult now due to the jokers being able to banish, but I don't see why path to oops should not be suitable for grinding anymore.

I really want to play some cute mmorpgs, but they tend to be done in a terrible quality and also bound to griding, partying and shit, without changing anything during 100 or more levels. So, in the end you spend half a year on a game you could be bored in a couple of days because of that.
I really wish they would just remake them in a single player fashion instead.

playing with a guild just makes things worse, because you can see everyone getting ahead of you in levels and dropping the game before you actually get a hang of it.

Hmm... You know what I'd be interested in picking up? An mmo that can let me travel around the world and do engaging quests, all the while, not making me want to fuck all of it and just grind to the top.

Honestly, I've never really picked up an MMO which had quests that actually piqued my interest. It's always go here, talk to that, kill this and get reward, rinse and repeat. Fuck that. I probably liked it the first time I got it, but not if it's the only quest ever.

How about working as a fucking caravan guard, escorting some merchants through some dangerous terrain? On that note, how about being sent to ambush the said caravan? I don't get why all MMO quests tend to be so simple and uninteresting. I don't feel, you know... Engaged.

I've been playing a bit on both of the iRO servers and it's just too god damn laggy. I'm playing from the UK and it's just rubberbanding everywhere, clicking doing nothing etc.
I don't remember having anything this bad on private servers.

I did see them advertising services which apparently reduced latency but this only leads me to think that they are fucking up the servers on purpose so that people pay to use these services. If that's the case then that's pretty sickening.

I did try the TCIP fix which is in one of the forum's stickies but it hasn't seem to have done much.

been playing DAoC on a freeshard. Multiboxing with a buffbot, pally and inf on Uthgard Albion. They've got a more classic version of the game running (1.09) since mythic refused to release throwback/classic servers (ToA is not classic, Mythic...)

I'm having pretty major issues with the lag too, not sure if I can handle playing like this.

My last run at RO was on some private server a few years ago and I don't recall there being even the slightest lag present in the way that playing on these servers feels. Trying to run in a straight line while 5-6 tiles away from an aggressive monster results in me hitting get hit at least 2-3 times, with the monster often magically ending up in the tile directly in front of me after I rubber-band a bit. It reminds me of the lag in Ultima Online back in 1998.

It really saddens me to say so, but the Brazil free-to-play servers have absurds such as a cash shop with ALL game cards (including MVP's in frequent "special sales"), boxes with EDPs and ADs, consumables that instantly enchant gear to +20, items that open slots on gear (including mid-head), servers where there is no way to get fly wings and butterfly wings without playing cash for them... and so on.

I hope it's not as ridiculous as this on the others.

It must be the connection's peering agreement somehow. A lot of people don't have that lag.

Different systems on the internet can have huge imbalances of byte transfers. Typically, if both the TO and FROM byte loads are fairly equal each month, then there is no additional charge for passing along those bytes. But if there is an imbalance and the ISP won't pay the other ISP monetary compensation for the byte imbalance, then throttling occurs.
