To be honest KS did exceed expectations simply by delivering some emotional moments that can justify reading it for people that have never read any notable VNs before, but to say that it's above average would require comparing it to NTR simulator 9000 and the like instead of games that were designed to deliver a story and emotional experience.
Hopefully team fourleaf hires an actual writer and some artists that can set themselves apart next time as well as find a story/narrative worth telling instead of just a gimmick setting piece that ends up not mattering much at all.

KS is good for everything that it is, but it won't compare to something made by veterans in the VN or writing field. That's all there really is to it, it was an adequate job, well done.

I personally had my own thoughts about some of the girl's endings back in the early days of KS, like I always imagined Hanako as a figure skater in the end. So naturally the ending felt unsatisfactory, but that does not make it bad. I liked how it ended with a kiss.

So I'm still ploughing through it and what really bugs me is that different authors wrote different routes. I haven't even checked the staff page to confirm this--I just know it.
As a result everything is completely different. I played the Emi route first and it was pretty damn good, but I'm now I'm 2/3 of the way through Shizune's route and it's like a different VN altogether. I mean whereas Hisao apparently wanted to ease into a relationship with Emi and it felt pretty real, with Shizune it was just like, "Lol be my girlfriend.", "K lol", *nothing changes*, *suddenly chair sex.*
I mean whata fuck man.

I don't see Hisao even "fell in love" with her. I mean that one fireworks scene was kind of cute, but it was just as likely he fell for Misha. Or Rin. Or anybody. He really has no reason to care about this girl and she has no reason to give two fucks about him. I can only hope that further into the route it turns out she said "No" when he asked her out and he misunderstood her signing. That would be great.

Scenarios are pretty decent, dialog is mediocre, characters are pretty good, art and animations are mixed, music is competent but far to generic.

Overall? Pretty middle of the road. Not as good as Popotan but not bad, the "cripple sex" angle is dealt with well rather than turned into a fetish thing (for better or worse, they could have had a Rin footjob but noooo...).

It's not spectacular, but it is pretty good.

The signing thing I whined about yesterday still bugs me. I wish they'd made the sign language like sign language rather than just dialogue in ｢｣s instead of “”s. I don't know if Japanese Sign Language has words that can map well to colloquial speech, but I doubt it does.
Just made the whole thing feel like a gimmick rather than a genuine barrier to communication. They could have done some pretty good things with the more formal and restricted vocabulary, but they just chose to write it exactly the same. I doubt any of the authors knew any form of sign language or bothered to read up on it.

That said I like how the disabilities turned out. I thought it would just be a gimmick but they handle it pretty damn well. I care about the characters and their physical problems without the story being preachy about it. And I'm actually glad they didn't just turn it into Cripple Fetish: The Eroge--you guys can go fuck yourselves.

As for the issues about the fetishes, my best guess is that it was subdued due to the high amount of controversy the game generated early on. Portraying them as actually being crippled and using that aspect of them for self gratification would have generated even more controversy, and possibly very bad outcomes in the end.
Focusing on the emotional aspect of it rather the the physical however, that is easier for people to accept. Which is why all the girls in focus appear to be so well adjusted in dealing with their disabilities, physically at least.

I personally don't see it as that big a deal, I mean why the fuck WOULDN'T you want to rid yourself of those inhibitions if you were having sex with someone you genuinely trusted and loved, crippled or not.
Then again, as I said, I am from /d/, we're not exactly known for our restraint. Oh well, there's always Sexy Losers.

It is generic, least compared to what it COULD have been, but I still don't think that makes it bad. You honestly think so? I thought the art was pretty damn nice and the music was great (as music-music it's mediocre, as VN music it's spot-on). The concept is good too, but it's not really theirs.

KS devs didnt do enough research so they basically sidestep the whole disability issues.

Just look at the background, where was the wheel chair lane, door handle and etc? Where was the dotted pavement for blind people? None of them were found.

This is where I call bullshit. I'm not really a fan of the VN, but they handled disability pretty damn well. It wasn't patronizing or preachy, nor was it hyper-politically correct or loledgy. The MC relayed exactly the sort of thoughts I'd be having pretty well, and people's disabilities and overcoming them came into play a lot.
Go lurk their forums. Plenty of disabled kids are praising how well it was handled.

I pointed this out a couple of days ago. It's entirely possible the wheelchair ramp was off-map in that one picture (specifically to the left).

I thought all the main characters were pretty consistent.
Though I'll give you that I thought this way about the art teacher (I can't remember his name--he only appeared once in Act 1) and Shizune's dad (who looked completely out of place).
I guess Mutou looked a little different too, but I just think it was because he was older and they wanted to show signs of ageing. He was also one of the few characters I really liked.

This pissed me off.
Granted the blog article mentions the original /a/ thread and such, but I feel 4chan as a community deserves more credit for getting this project off the ground. At least a "Special Thanks" in the credits or a mention in the history section of the manual.
I get that 4chan is super edgy and stuff and they don't want to associate with it, but it's not like it's some obscure website in the dark corners of the internet that you should be ashamed to admit you visit. Just fucking give credit where credit is due.

The way I see it that was to protect themselves from any potential backlash or controversy as a result of the cesspool of the internets making a game about disabled girls, they wanted to be different no?
Also Katawa Shoujo has received ALLOT more attention then random posts on a message board, you can't really compare the amount of focus on each.

I'm not denying that they didn't do their research as well as they could have, but it's a fanmade game with no support or backing in resources. I wasn't expecting them to go and check out hospitals and homes for the disabled and such in the first place.

Could have been better yes, is not bad as is tho. I mean ZUN makes the Touhou games on his own, and would probably be allot better if he brought in help. But they are not bad on their own, I enjoy playing them for what they are, and listening to the music every now and then. I especially love the fanbase that carries it and all the things they have done. Wonder if Katawa Shoujo would develop something similar.
