Quick American Football Primer:

The goal is to move the ball 100 yards down the field to score.
The offense has 4 tries or "downs" to move the ball at least ten yards , and if they succeed then they get a "first down" meaning that it becomes their first try again, until they fail or they score.

If they fail after 4 downs, the other team gets the ball at the same location.

Typically you start around the 20 yard line and have to fight 80 yards, but let's say you only make 7 yards total, the other team only has to move 27 yards to score.
So to prevent that, at fourth down you can punt the ball, and where ever it ends up is where the other team has to start.

If you're the kicker and you fumble the snap, you can pick it back up and kick it. However, your offensive line is trying to prevent the defense from breaking through and getting to you to either block the kick or pick up the ball that you just dropped. And no mater how good they are, you can only expect them to keep you protected for maybe 5 seconds before someone finally gets through.
