Arcades are one of the main reason I want to go to Japan. I feel so jealous, arcades died in like 2000 here. Now all we have is shitty "arcades" with 2 DDR games and one Time Crisis.

>> No.8359775

Sadly no arcade around me, and even if there were I doubt they would have games that interest me.

On a side note, does anyone know how much Japanese arcades charge per play? I was wondering if they maintain their popularity there because they are cheaper or the market is more devoted.

we've still got some arcades up here in the pacific northwest. gameworks in seattle has all the latest brawlers in those sit-down cabinets like in OPs pic. and more importantly there's skilled players to challenge. there's something very satisfying about beating someone good and proper when they're sitting right next to you, unlike playing online. there's also a fuckton of cool import games, like taiko no tatsujin which is much more fun with bigass taikos to bang on. oh and the wait staff will bring you alcoholic drinks without even having to get up from your game.

Not many of us, but there are a few. I started out with DDR since it was the only thing available here for the longest time, then our mall arcade closed and the other one converted over to shit tier ITG. It just didn't have the same charm as DDR so I didn't bother going back after giving it a few tries. I never got a decent metal pad or PSX/USB converter for the PC, so that's pretty much where my DDR days ended.

Sometime later I found a copy of BMUS with KOC for $30 and I've been playing IIDX casually ever since with the AC rips floating around the net. I still haven't managed to pass anything over a 10 (and that was the joke that is Rising in the Sun Another) but I enjoy the music and it's what ended up introducing me to j-core.

I went to an arcade in Vietnam once. I was playing Tekken 6, getting my ass kicked by Kuma in story mode. Right about as I was about to die, some dude watching from afar popped in a token and challenged me, essentially saving my ass. I played as Hwoarang and he played as the cute robot girl, Alisa if I remember correctly.

I managed to take the first round from him, much to the surprise of me and my friends. He then decided to turn on the jets (both figuratively and in-game) and ran me over the next two rounds. It was a pretty humbling experience.

The Philippines where I lived for awhile has a healthy arcade scene, slight semblance of Japanese arcades. They have a chain of arcades called timezone where they issue cards instead of tokens to play games.

The only thing I would complain is there's not as much variety compared to Japanese arcades. Good luck trying to find GG, BB, Melty Blood, Taiko Tatsujin or any Cave shooters there. Tekken is big over there, but I don't like juggling fighters.

Still better than the piss poor excuses that America calls arcades.

Single buttons are easier to replace and the whole system is generally more robust than a single multi-button controller. Look at the demo console units in a store and you see what I mean. Most of them are busted to shit.

I miss my local arcades. I miss playing DDR and Drum Mania. I also miss the "being less fat" that comes from regular DDR playing.... I've gained about 20kg since I was forced to stop.

>> No.8364951

I always have this fantasy that I'll go to some arcade and play DDR and be awesome at it and look super cool. In reality I played I think once and sucked and looked super gay for playing a girl's game.
Damn it cheesy American 80s/90s pop culture. Why did you lie to me?

>> No.8364964

The single biggest hurdle in playing DDR is not lack of stamina or skill, but learning to accept that WILL look like a total retard while playing, and just accept it and play anyway.

Though if you hug the bar I will personally come over there and cut off your hands.

Not where I used to play. We would actually hit people's hands if they did that. Learn to control your balance while playing instead of relying on an outside support. It's honestly not that hard.

I literally tried to do MAX 300 in a night club once. Not in a "such a nerd xD" way or even a joking way, I thought it might look cool.

I can still SDG it with no bar, but I'm still going to use it if I'm playing (somewhat) competitively. Besides, it's not like I use it for easier 10s and below.

Funny enough, I'm one of those guys that plays 1x exclusively. I started playing with 3rd Mix. There was a bar back then, but nothing other than 1x.

Personally if I used the bar and you went around hitting my hands, I'd get you tossed out of the arcade if you continued being a retard about how other people play the game.

It never struck me as a "skill" until I started playing with others that couldn't survive on anything slower than 2x. I actually have a hard time reading things faster than ~500 BPM scroll rate. I can do it (e.g. AA FC on MAX.(period)), but it's far from my comfort zone of 150-400. Playing with slow scroll rate makes me very dependent on the music, though, so I'm extremely sensitive to poorly synchronized songs.

Interestingly, I play IIDX with heavy speed mods, and I can somewhat sympathize with people that can't play DDR 1x, because I certainly can't play IIDX with HS 0. I prefer that game with a ~600 BPM scroll rate, or a 290 green lane cover number, if that means anything to you.

The reason Westerners are fat is because they don't go to the arcades, but instead stuck playing in the PCs and consoles.
