What's the distinction between tenshi and megami? Do Japanese people use the word interchangeably?

>> No.833476

tenshi - angel
megami - goddess.

>> No.833482

I think he's asking in terms of Shintoist belief.

I don't know if there's a distinction but I'm no expert.

>> No.833487

gigami - high goddess

Does anyone else think the "goddesses" in Ah! Megami-sama behave more like the western concept of angels?

>> No.833494

My knowledge in Shintoism is limited to Suwako and Hanyuu.

Well, given that western (Read: Christian) mythos has one allmighty male god... Yes.

But the mythology being depicted in the series is clearly non-Christian. Three of the female characters are the Norns from Viking mythology. Verdandi (ah, Japanese b/v and l/r ambiguities), Ord and Skuld. Not to mention that Fenrir turns up, I recall.

A single answer: anime.

AMG is all about Norse. Yggsdrasil and all.

I managed to erase the events of the series from my mind, just remembering enough to rage at people saying "Belldandy".

>> No.834027

Considering that the character has practically nothing to do with the Norse goddess I don't see why you let the variant spelling concern you.

>> No.834038

>tenshi - angel
"tenshi - heavenly being" is the more accurate term.
