What you're referring to as Otaku Culture, is in fact, Autistic Culture, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Autism plus Culture

I read on the blog of one of my favorite artists that he makes 360 yen for every sale on dlsite. So I went and checked his last release, and found that it sold over 850 copies. That means he earned around 300 000 yen on that one set.

Obviously he couldn't make a living from it, since he's complaining about his creativity running out from just making 2-3 works every year. But it's not as bad as I thought, with people claiming that most artists barely make enough money to cover the costs of making their work.
