Indentured servants.

Women could be born into prostitution as children of the quarters residents, but often brothel owners would pay poor families or those suffering unusual hardship unable to support all their children for their daughters. Professional people called zegan scoured the countryside for this purpose (analogous to talent scouts of modern times). The shogunate banned the outright practice of selling people, so instead the girls were indentured for fixed contracts (usually 10 years) but often these contract periods were extended sneakily and many girls did not outlive the initial contract period. Parents who sold their daughters were payed 'minoshirokin' (money for the body) and the girl became almost a slave of the brothel owner. If parents or a kindly patron could come up with the money to buy her out of her servitude at a later date she could leave the quarter. This was known as miuke (redemption).
