Touhou has a crazy fandom, kind of like Marimite, only with Marimite it's like a small dedicated fandom that'll pair them with ANYTHING.

Nanoha doesn't surprise me, even though StrikerS was pretty crap the Japanese loved that shit. It wouldn't surprise me if most of that is more Fate/Nanoha pics. They have a character for everyone.

Yeah, I haven't checked the Japanese cg sites list in a LONG time, as you can tell. Used to only check the Nekomimi sites because going through 400 or so new cg sites a day is unpossible.

Think of it like this, Touhou is always adding more content to the point we're easily over 50 girls before we even start considering the Win98 exclusive characters, oh and one guy we see a bit of with a couple others rarely ever referred to.

Hell, these days the games are only really half of it. You could keep the new content moving through the fan made doujins and art alone these days. ZUN adding new characters and a little more information is just a formality now.

Nanoha fanart is probably the best thing about it these days, most of it is hot/awesome/both. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the H-doujin works which either fall into futa territory or rape (most often with faceless assailants), good yuri seems rare for a series with so much gay subtext. Some of the doujins otherwise are kind of cute, one or two fairly awesome (RAID SLASH fuck yeah).

Marimite community amuses me to no end though. The series wasn't that great, mostly dull with a few good moments, but it's fanart is crazy. Pic related.

The music is part of it. I think though the popularity is from the girls themselves. That and the fanart (i.e. IOSYS, McRoll, etc).
