"Manly" shit aside, scotch. Once you adapt to the taste of alcohol, it has the richest most complex tastes outside of red wines. I don't believe in mixing drinks for the same reason I don't put milk or sugar in my tea, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

Suntory makes a great whisky marketed as scotch which I find to be incredibly smooth, but with the smoky flavor I'm looking for. Great introduction to scotch, or anyone looking to expand their pallet.

You can't go wrong with a nice beer. If you're American, you'll have a hard time finding a good beer though. Start off by buying a bottle of middle-shelf vodka, and sip it. You might mix it with coke if you don't like the taste. Just slowly adjust to it until you like it.

I would hold off on telling anyone to get into alcohol by starting with mixed drinks (though drinks mixed with other alcohols, martinis and all that are fine if that's your thing) as it will take significantly longer to adapt to it.

"Sweet" or rose wines are a good place to start, I found. Plenty of variety so you can usually find something you like, decent taste on it's own, and very cheap.

That's how I got started anyway. Not a fan of beer at all though, so I guess this is advice from the other side of the tracks.
