Giving virtual hats in exchange for some guy/girl (probably a guy) to talk you dirty in some games chat window.

I seriously don't want to live in this planet anymore

What you guys think about this /jp/?

Should I feel uneasy about this? I know /v/ has some kind of retarded meme about hats, what's the big deal with them?

I'm upset.

it just TF2 hat's trading for money and other goods via steam trade.

Ok I'll give you a history lesson, during the an update for two of the class ( The sniper and the py in particular) valve decided to release one cosmetic item i.e. a hat for each class.
The autism that slept within TF2 erupted and everyone wanted one because there was a 3% chance it would drop in your inventory at random.
Due to this explosive popularity Valve started making more and more and more and more to the point where they didn't even bother adding new weapons or maps or game modes, just hats.
about a year down the line the game was pretty much filled with useless hats that server no purpose with hats (but also at this point there was roughly a few new weapons) Valve introduced the manneconomy which presented itself in two parts. One, a mann co. store where you could buy hats off Valve from an in-game store for actual dollars, two a trading so you could trade hats to eachother. This blossomed a massive hat based economy within the game, using craftable metal, mann co supply keys( you buy them from the store to unlock crates) and promotional items such as the earbuds during TF2's port to the apple iMac and Bill's Hat during the L4D2 pre-order promo.
This economy still continues today and now even the community makes a fair majority of the hats and miscellaneous items that all server no purpose other than be cosmetic. People have literally made a profit from hat trading, I know one unusual hat of mine is appraised at $200USD I am not kidding because someone literally offer me $250USD for it, other unusal hats can be worth much much more. I recall a burning Team Captain (a hat in the likeness of M. Bison's signature cap) sold for $1500USD.
This tradition of piling hats upon hats is one of the reason on what killed TF2 even though there's still an average of 2000 per day so I wouldn't necessarily call it killed.

it's not gay, it's probably the embodiment of faggotry.

Part two.
During the manneconomy update these new hats, called 'polycount hats' were different. These ones provided additional effects to the class if the player wore the entire themed set the hat was apart of of. This cause a massive uproar in the community because hats now had a purpose, thanks to this massive autistic rage hats now only serve for cosmetic purposes because using to actually have an effect on gameplay just make the fanbase cry even harder.
As of now there are many trading sites such as TF2Trading post, TF2Outpost, Tf2warehouse, several forums and over 3 dozens trade servers in-game dedicated to the trading, purchasing, selling and collecting of TF2 hats. this trading only grew when it was possible to trade steam games through steam's in-application trading system for TF2 items. In theory it is possible to never pay a cent for steam games again required you're a shrewd enough hat trader. TF2 earbuds are appraised for $30USD each, promotional max heads at $80USD. These are real monetary values created by the TF2 community.
So yeah, they're kind of a big deal. That is if you give a shit about TF2 in the first place.

I am bad at video games, so I usually end up playing for about three hours at most. I never notice any improvements, so I usually just end up crying myself to sleep after most gaming sessions.

Having a learning disorder makes everything very difficult. Hell, it took me an entire decade to learn Quake 3 Arena. And that was from playing ~10 hours a day.
