Lets have an old fashioned JRPG General shall we?

Personally only gonna play through Dark Cloud 2 because it's pretty awesome. Level 5 really outdid themselves. Story is pretty shit but nice combat system, weapon enhancement system, village making. Dark Cloud series is really a gem of JRPG's that I haven't seen in awhile. If you want a good JRPG play some Dark Cloud. Only reason Dark Cloud 1 is not so good is because your weapons can break so easily... hours of work destroyed in seconds.

I loved Dark Cloud 2, the game has a lot of charm. Some of the dungeons get pretty monotonous, though. I can't motivate myself to play anymore of the original Dark Cloud, it's easy enough to stay alive and not break weapons after awhile, but it lacks that charm and comes off as rather bland.

I'm playing Strange Journey now, after quitting Shadow Hearts: From the New World because it was terrible compared to the original two.

The terms were coined by American game reviewers with an obvious bias. They crafted this term out of their asses, and in practise, there was no coherent and or underlining thought of which the games shared or had in common other than their country of origin.

Not to be speaking of how they at the time already used terms like "computer RPGs" or "console RPGs", or even terms like "light", or "simple" RPGs. These are terms that directly describes the content.
The "J" merely represents the country of origin, and cannot represent anything that has to do with the content, and is in all honesty, irrelevant to the actual genres of the product which in a sense makes it flawed to be paired and stuck right next to the title.

Also, if you just look a bit at gaming history, you should realize that America were the first pioneers of turn based combat, random encounters, etc etc etc. Which is a train they rode long and far, even after Japan and others started doing games like that as well.
It is also a flaw to believe that America are the only ones who makes games brandished with labels such as "W", given the many open world RPGs that have been made outside of America too, or Europe.

Some are just too attatched to irrelevant letters such as "W" or "J" coined and enforced by people only to strengthen their bias.
It's also even funnier when some of the largest RPG series of America (or "the West", as if the west were magically one united region or something), have been ported and more or less entirely copied at the core, by Japan, and you have "W" or "J" enforcers dividing them apart as entirely different games when they are in truth the same.

>> No.8265778

>>8265775
People also tend to forget Roguelikes, or Strategy RPGs, and the many other variants of RPGs among computer/console RPGs, all of which shares common ancestors. One of the most common scenario is actually that people who speak of "WRPGs", simply don't know all that much of actual American RPG gaming history, and instead repeat and speak of the same old games over and over again, be it Baldur's Gate or Fallout, TES or whatever, most such peoples' knowledge stop there, and their knowledge tend to turn foggy if asked what led up to that point, and what other games there have been and what others there are.

The terms "WRPG" or "JRPG" as far as actual game content goes happens to be so ill defined that they practically lacks a definition altogether. And with all that disregarded they only serve to declare the product's country of origin, and nothing of its content. Which in turn makes it a fallacy to bind them together with the genre to begin with. To have a "J-RPG" suggests that a J-RPG is a different kind of RPG with a different content considering how the genre of computer/console RPG serves to describe the content. But as a computer/console RPG is the same in concept no matter from where it is from, it is completely and utterly irrelevant, and the sole reason the terms even exist beyond from what terms that have already existed and been in use, is only because of people with an extended bias.

>Some are just too attatched to irrelevant letters such as "W" or "J" coined and enforced by people only to strengthen their bias.

Take a look at this random list:

Wizardry
Bards tale
Might & Magic
Class of heroes

Despite very similar game play (a painful grind in a dungeon maze, where each floor is a 32x32 grid, or whatever) one of these games is not like the others. Character classes are the same.. there are mages and healers and tanks and thieves. The classic races are represented as well in most cases, with men, elves, and dwarves. The D&D roots are strong in all these games.

But one of them stands out... While the rest feature adult men and women on a quest to kill some evil bastard and save a princess (or even the world), one of these games is a group of middle school students who explore the dungeon as a part of their schoolwork. They wear school uniforms into a dungeon and fulfill quests for their teacher or principle.

This is what makes it a JRPG. It has nothing to do with game mechanics, it is about "teenage boy looking for adventure with his friends, and being respectful to his teacher". This is UNIQUELY Japanese, and this is what defines it as a JRPG.

They also turned the dwarves into a dangerously furry kind of catgirl (doggirl?), although this should not be confused with the other catgirl race, the Felpier, who are less furry.

tl;dr

I love both JRPGs and WRPGs and the distinction is almost always crystal clear between the two (with rare exceptions like dark souls out there that blur the lines).

i'd like to see you give an acceptable explanation of the term without being ripped apart by somebody. in any case, i doubt there are more than a few people on the site who can, which means you're in the wrong, since there's no harm in questioning a word without solid definition.

just like most terms that originate on 4chan, it's not a well-defined term and its use here is questionable at best. but that's to be expected of a term probably created to help criticize weeaboos.

The history of this happens to be that Ar Tonelico is very obviously and undeniably /jp/ related due to being a full blown galge, with selectable heroines an routes and everything, as well as being 50% VN based.

If anything, it initially expanded for the reason to prevent those other topics from being created stand-alone from the Ar Tonelico threads, which would only bug even more people, than if it was at least all condensed.

Though that part of things might have their own fans now to some extent, and even many who liked Ar Tonelico have tried out the other games due to being console games of the same publisher (not same developer teams) etc.

But the cue point is still that those threads have never been here because "RPGs" are /jp/ related or anything, but because Ar Tonelico as a genuine galge happens to be, and because people tolerated it to expand for better or worse.

You don't want the phone version of Disgaea. They went full retard and made it android exclusive and microtransaction based.

Disgaea: Netherworld Unbound

This is a stripped down version of D1, except you only have one prinny as your entire army and have to buy the rest of the characters through micro-transactions. They also removed the main story/quest and instead focus entirely on itemworld.

I'm on like lvl. 140-how goddamn long does it take to get to 9999? I play mostly to kill time now that I'm done with the story.

Disgaea 1 is great, the only one that tops it is Disgaea 4 in my opinion.
If you can, get the PSP version, it's the best one out there. If not, the DS version is a good substitute, but not quite as good.

i have a PSP as well so sure. i was under the misguided belief for some reason that the DS and PSP games were different games, not modified versions of the same game.

I personally always preferred Disgaea 2 over Disgaea 1.
Yes, the plot is incredibly cheesy, but the characters and character development is the best out of all the games, and the story was still nice as the journey made you feel that things were moving along.

Agreed. Only thing I liked about 1 was Captain Gordon. 2 was great.

If you can, get 1 and 2 on the PSP. They have more content added on those ports.

>>8275040
I enjoyed every Disgaea game but 3. Overall D2 didn't seem as enjoyable as D1/D4.

2 seems to have the best music.

I was wondering about that one... reviews say it's a rather lazy port, not using the full potential of the 3D for example.

It IS just a port, with nothing added at all. And the only 3D is the text boxes popping out of the screen a bit. And no, I haven't played it yet, but I don't really care, as I've never played Abyss on the PS2 anyway.

Is Neptunia supposed to be regularly priced? It's $60 on Amazon and Wal-mart's website but it was only $29.99 new at gamestop. Atelier Totori was only $39.99 too.

Getting the weird look from the cashier was worth the extra 30 bucks.

Recently I can't stop playing Legend of Mana.

I'm so addicted to making my own tempering recipes and pet raising. 500+ hours of DEPTH.

Before that it was FF Tactics and spending countless hours perfecting my roster with unique classes/squads.

Why do I find older JRPG's gameplay so deep and enjoyable?
How come they don't make them like this anymore?
Do I have autism?

Because compared to a lot of games, the older ones are 'deep' (or try to be). Compare it to GUST or neptunia nonsense now.

Bought both Disgaea 4 and Neptuna...

Disgaea is really good (not sure if I'll delve deep into it due to work).

Neptuna...within 5 minutes I realize that I can't play this while family is present...FFFUUUUUUUUU-

Fun note that HD Asagi is free dlc for Disgaea 4, find a reaon NOT to get her.
