If you ask me it's just really mediocre storywise. Art is good but the music isn't something to write home about. However it's still better than most other western VNs out there. I can go on and on about the goods and bads about the thing when it comes out but I think the message to take home is that it's an okay Western VN made for free by some indie guys and that we should build upon that. Here's hoping the producers listen to their criticisms and praises and make something that will blow your socks off next time.

Katawa Shoujo is the entry level game made for the secondary fans of eroges. Not once has this game tried to make itself unique in any leg splitting way. You're also making pretty baseless assumptions about the development of KS. Lets say you wrote a part of it every single day for five years, you come out to about roughly 281 words a day, which is doable for even a retard.
If you did some game art, like one unique piece per weekend you would have 260 unique art assets with some variations. That seems pretty reasonable.
Next if you worked on a track each month you would have a sountrack of 60 different tracks in that time period.
Programming and GUI really shouldn't be more than a months work, unless you made it completely from scratch with something like primitives in OpenGL, then I can imagine taking two or three months to program a millionth variation of a rather basic "game" engine.
So there are what, 17 staff members... Lets round it off to 15, then give them each an hour a day to work on their respective tasks. After five years they would have worked 26,700 hours total, which is roughly 3 years for a single person constantly working without sleep.
But that is only the case with the premise that the work on KS is a great achievement as it seems to be claimed.

There really isn't a way to quantify the effort and man-hours in such a was to give a satisfactory representation of the quality of KS. Most eroge companies are extremely small so on the premise that KS is good and KS Devs produce good work, it's fair to assume that their game is comparable to the very best VN you can find, which it isn't.
