Is it just me or is smoking far, far more common than it is on this side of the Pacific? Smoking in doors, not even separate smoking sections. Smoking in trains. Smoking in government buildings. What's the deal with Japan and smoking?

Restaurants generally have non smoking sections, some ban it outright or ban it at certain times. There is no smoking on trains.

The annoying thing to me in Japan is smoking in arcades. Sometimes they ban it on certain floors at least. Also at even otaku geared bars / clubs they allow it, but I can't really expect them to ban it in that kind of atmosphere, I guess...
