Would an unlocked american cellphone work in japan? I heard they have a different wave length for telephone connections in japan is this true? If so where would i be able to obtain a prepaid phone easily(like name a common store) without knowing japanese?

Japan has this fucked up network, it's really gay. Your phone will work IF IT IS 3G CAPABLE. If not, you are shit out of luck I'm afraid. You could rent a phone at the airport though if you really needed to.
