First time on /jp/

Recently I've started playing Touhou and I'm loving it but i feel like i don't know anything about it.
I went to /v/ since it was a game but that was a mistake so can anybody tell me more about this franchise?

Also two questions
1.Why does Reimu's appearance change?
2.Why is this fan base so hated outside of /jp/ ?

I pronounce it as Toho (both o's pronounced like the o in "soft")

Most westerners seem to pronounce it as "Toe Hoe" so that's fine too.

There's also others that pronounce that as Tohu, kinda like "Tofu" but has an "h" instead of an "f", and is the most retarded way to pronounce it.
