How do you deal with the overwhelming sadness after finishing a visual novel?

I've been trying to catch up on all of the VNs that I haven't played, but I find myself getting so depressed when I finish one. I'll get really immersed in the story and then fall in love with one of the characters, but as soon as I finish the game I start crying and I usually can't stop for at least an hour or two. It feels like the girl I love has just died.

It's getting to the point that I don't even want to start any new games because I know that it's just going to make me cry my eyes out when it's over and I realize that I'm never going to talk to her again.

>> No.8189040

I wish I got tied enough to the characters that I could cry when I finish a VN. You're one lucky bastard.

Try reading an eternally ongoing series like Index or something.

It's both a gift and a curse.
I can only suggest picking up a new VN/video game. Something short and meaningless, like a generic eroge or a shooter/fighting game.

>> No.8189065

I feel this way about everything. Even generic moeshit/harem anime. Not sure why.

As long as you have another one to immerse in you can continue the circle, is the best substitute of real life drama if you can't get it somewhere else.

>> No.8189071

Just keep a gigantic collection of every VN that you think you would enjoy and then immediately start a new VN after finishing the old one. The sadness won't hurt as much if you don't give yourself a chance to think about it and then before you know it you'll be falling in love all over again.

>> No.8189085

Why not try to play two visual novels at once, when you finish one, start a new one.

This sounds like a wonderful curse.

I have the same exact problem.

I was watching an educational Japanese language series the other day and the majority of the lessons are somewhat cheesy live-action skits that follow the life of a new transfer student. I started sobbing when it was over.

>> No.8189094

I always get bored after I finish the first route in a game and play through the rest with the shift key held down (and often with a walkthrough open), with very few exceptions.

Am I alone?

>> No.8189109

I know what you mean. I can't even play the other routes because it feels like blasphemy towards the story I just read.

>> No.8189115

>>8189094

I don't really get bored, but I feel unfaithful if I try to start a new route. It's rare that I'm ever able to play through more than one route. Seeing my girlfriend from the last route and knowing how lonely she is as I pursue a new relationship just eats me up with guilt and I stop playing. Strangely enough though, I have no guilt about starting a new VN.

I never know what to do after the first route. Do I re-read the whole thing? Do I skip the bits I've read? Do I trust the program to do it for me? What if I've forgotten something?

I too hate that empty feeling when I finish a VN, usually I don't have anything else lined up to play so I get that malaise funk where I just sit on /jp/ for hours.

>> No.8189141

>>8189134
I always just skip everything that doesn't involve the girl I'm aiming for.

>> No.8189155

Sometimes I wish I could constantly wipe my memory and replay the same route over and over again. Sure, you can play it again and see her, but it's like watching sad home videos of your dead wife. You can still see her and hear her, but she doesn't really feel alive anymore.

>> No.8189173

Do you guys listen to the full voice or do you just click once you've finished reading?

>> No.8189181

>>8189094
You should probably just drop the VN for a few months and read another route after you've forgotten most of the stuff you've already read.

I just click after I read.

Depends on if I've fallen for the character yet. If I love her then I savor every word and listen to the full voice.

>> No.8189210

>>8189173
Depends on how good the voice acting is.
Not really, I just click at my own pace. No point in hearing a bunch of girls speak a language I can't understand.

I always wait for the audio to stop before I move on. It's rude to interrupt people, even if they are imaginary.

>> No.8189247

>>8189240
Doesn't it take you a really long time to finish the game then?

>> No.8189250

Only really happens to me when the end is a bit too "final." I really don't feel that routes need to carry me through 60 years to when the character dies peacefully next to their grandchildren and ascends to heaven, thanks.

I only pick games that are voiced by people that I like to listen to so I never skip voices. I usually just put it on auto.

>> No.8189957

I have the same problem with visual novels, video games, etc, OP.

The only way I make myself push through it is just continually reminding myself that it's not real and that the girls will continue to live on in my heart even after the novel is over.

>> No.8189969

Crying myself to sleep helps.

>> No.8189970

I have the opposite problem, I want to finish things as fast as possible because it makes me feel like I accomplished something.
