Why not make a free Japanese account and purchase the lowest amount of points available and grab the avatar(s)? That's pretty much what I do for my NISA games since they're American and my PSN account is UK/EU. Any stuff you download on your PS3, regardless of the account, is available on all of the other accounts whether they downloaded it or not.

I'm not sure about America but around February Europe is getting the MGS HD remake bundle, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Tales of Graces f, Neptunia 2 and Meruru. This is pretty much directly after Steam is done emptying my wallet too with their Christmas sales. My body is ready, my wallet is not.

I have a Japanese account. Yeah, I bought the avatars. The thing is, I use my US account to play fightan. But I want the Azusa avatar because it fits my handle. I'll just make do with Mimi for now.

> Any stuff you download on your PS3, regardless of the account, is available on all of the other accounts whether they downloaded it or not.
Not true. I downloaded this premium Catherine avatar from JP PSN and I can't use it on my US account. It seems that the avatar you get will only be associated with that account, so no Azunyan avatar for my US one.

Yeah, that would make sense. AT3 had an entire second party's worth of characters who could easily have been party members.

Though I think I like it better that AT3 had a static Vanguard party, as it let the vanguards be regular participants in the plot as opposed to 1/2 where they just kinda hung out in the background until their own subplots became relevant.

Make a UK PSN acount. i dare you not to laugh your ass off how terrible (and overpriced) the EU PSN store is. when your done laughing, picture even LESS content for other EU countries due to SCEE's retarded submission policy's.

holland and belgium dont have the totori DLC for example because even though there is not a word of dutch in the game, they still have to translate the fucking store description to dutch and apparently NISA did not feel like doing so.

Say want you want about the 360 but at least MS makes a decent effort for the EU.

They figured Rorona would be 'too old' so they turned her into a loli. I'm indifferent to loli Rorona though her voice is mildly annoying but her older self shown in the 2012 calendar is extremely delicious. Actually, here's a breakdown of the space used on the Japanese AT2 disc:

4.3M erxs
274K modules
1.9G movie
350M rpk.bin
9.0M SLPS_732.63
1.1G sound
2.0K SYSTEM.CNF
774M vpack

Just duplicating vpack (the .afs files with all the voices in them) would already put them over 4.7GB, and that's assuming that the voice clips were on average as long as the original ones, which is hard to say... It's definitely feasible that they ran out of space.

The problem is that the GUST games use relatively wimpy compression for audio - 4bit ADPCM. For example, let's take Harmonics Frelia as stored on the game disc. It's 147 seconds long (just over two minutes) and takes up and takes up almost 8MB of storage (7940614 bytes). Ogg Vorbis at 163kbps takes 1 million bytes less to encode 3.75 times as much audio (5:44). If they'd been able to use a better compression algorithm for audio data, they could have stored SO MUCH MORE audio - note that the sound/stream directory (the BGM) is 1.1GB. You could half that easily with better compression, and that alone almost gives you enough room to duplicate the vpack info.

>> No.8188327

>>8188321
The movie directory is also 1.9GB - it uses MPEG1 video for everything, which is not the most optimal codec in the world. (They also apparently encode silent audio in the movies, but that only accounts for like 7% of the movie space.) And there are a lot of videos:

36M movie/3d - 3DCG of mostly Infel Phira related stuff at low and high resolution
87M AT2_OP01.sfd
95M movie/AT2_OP1D.sfd
186M movie/cs - a 6.5MB, 10 second clip for EVERY Cosmosphere entry scene
408M movie/csl - a 15MB, 19 second clip for EVERY Cosmosphere "Level Cleared!" scene
140M movie/eff - all the special magic/super move clips, flashy song magic effects, Synchronity Chain, etc. - most of which is actually there twice, once at a really low resolution, once at 640x480
344M movie/event - the zoom outs/pans for when you first enter towns, special effect backgrounds, panning over Frelinlinlililin's body sleeping in the pod, flashback scenes for stuff like Infel Phira, the cast roll for the Binary Sphere, etc. For some reason the Syureria - The singer angel opening is in here, too.
476M movie/event2 - cel-shaded FMVs and stuff like the activation of the CV/DV during the creation of Gaea (two versions), airship videos, Rim sector purges, and so on
5.8M /movie/event3 - a couple of other incidentals
91M movie/is - InfelSphere level start/clear videos

They probably could have cut 50MB by just not including videos at low AND high res, and probably another 150MB by not including audio (since it's silence anyway). Who knows how much better video compression would have netted? I doubt there's even a half hour of FMVs...

The PS2 main CPU is 300MHz, but it has a bunch of DSP extensions, so doing all the extra audio/video decompression PLUS the rest of the game logic may or may not be feasible. This is probably why GUST (and other companies) like Sofdec - it's easy to decode, at least.

Disgaea 4 came out two months later, it has the same bugs it had on release in the US, and doesn't even have a patch yet. So EU players can still use the shop to clone items. Obviously, no DLC characters yet, either. I swear all the DLC for Neptunia was published weeks after the USA(it's not just NISA tho, Konami also hasn't released all the DLC of Harmony of Despair, for whatever reason. Consider this: since it's a 360 port, the US version of Harmony of Despair already has all language settings, so I, say, play that in italian with no issues at all and all DLC. There is no foreseeable reason Europe shouldn't have them already, since the game was released around the same time, too.). That's not even getting in the fact that the same game can cost 15 dollars in the US and 15 Euros in Europe, which despite the recent crisis, is still a good 40% more. Speaking of translations, I don't see why NISA wouldn't make ones for the dutch market, considered that the ones it does make are WORSE than what google would do. That doubles for the translations on the back of the game cases. Disgaea 2 and 4's italian ones are so bad it hurts to read them.

TL,DR: Being europe is suffering, save for the very occasional benefit like, uuuh, FFX with Dark Aeons, Terranigma(which I never saw personally), Xenoblade Chronicles(which was pirated by anyone who cared anyway).

P.S.: I just remembered we almost never get decent limited editions for non-mainstream games and had a small fit of rage. Last one I can remember for GUST is Mana Khemia PS2.

The only EU publishers that make decent limited editions are Ghostlight (P3P, Argarest), PQube (Blazblue, Arcana Hearts 3) and Rising star (Deathsmiles, Donpachi).
Sure their still kinda late but at least they make a good effort unlike most publishers.
Hell, PQube even included the NA DLC on disk with Blazblue CT due to the lateness.
Also apparently Deep Silver is bringing Catherine to the EU with the Pizzabox special edition that the US had.
http://www.siliconera.com/2011/12/02/one-stray-sheep-pizza-served-with-a-side-of-catherine/

But for some reason NISA clings to those assholes tecmo-koeie who keep the artbooks exclusive to the UK because "we are a UK publisher". yet NISA touts them as the "European" publisher.
Of course if you point that out to their sales department they conveniently start ignoring you.

And yeah, most dutch on game boxes and the PSN store is obviously machine translated as well so NISA has no fucking excuse.
I for one, am holding off new NISA titles until they sort this bullshit out. knowing them it would not surprise me if future titles will not have DLC in holland&belgium as well.

Personally, I have both a US and a EU one, but my main problem is getting ahold of some of the games, since shipping from the US costs. A lot. There has been the occasional US game in a local gamestop, like Catherine, and suprisingly, Agarest Zero(yeah, I don't know what the fuck either). I ordered Totori from the US, and I got it from Amazon since shipping was a bit cheaper, and I could get it with another game and save further on the shipping(does Rune Factory Oceans even have an EU release date yet?).

Also for some reason, I've had 2 US games (BlazBlue CT and another I don't remember right now) that showed their trophies in Japanese. This is a minor issue, but it's probably because the game wasn't yet released in Europe and it was like 'eh, system language is not English, let's default to Japanese'.

On another note, BestBuy for US PSN cards. Accepts credit card not issued in the US, sends code via email, sells them at face value with no additional charge. They might not be the fastest, but I always got the code in less than one day. You have to enter a specific address they give for international 'shipping' when filing the order, but since it's an email delivery, and you're not actually getting it at their stores, it's not a problem to do so. Considered that every other service either has problems with where you live, or had additional charges, I find it pretty convenient. Also, after the first time you enter everything, it literally takes less than a minute to order another one.

Well, getting to mainstream games, Square-Enix Europe made pretty good limited editions:

FFVIII was mighty fine, with a white memory card and a good quality T-shirt I wore until it had holes in it.

Unlimited Saga had a limited edition that was better than the game actually was. (To be honest the game had a redeeming quality or two, but it was mostly plain boring to me. And I tried. I really tried.)

Star Ocean 4 had a limited edition for the Xbox 360. I made triple backwards somersaults hunting videogame shops around the country to find it. 2 years later it magically reappeared in every Gamestop I see around.

FFXIII had limited editions in both 360 and PS3 version. FFXIII-2 apparently will have two limited editions(a 79.99€ one, and a 119.99€ one, which I hope comes atleast with a figure).

I'm pretty sure most of their PSP releases came with limited editions too(Dissidia, Lord of Arcana, etc.).

Nintendo also has been pretty decent with its first/second party titles. Skyward Sword has a pretty good one with a golden Wiimote that only costs 10 more €, and both editions have the soundtrack included.

Capcom had a few good limited editions, but lately I feel like Capcom should be renamed to Jew Inc., considered the amount of useless DLC-that-should-have-been-on-disc they're releasing.

Other than those, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls also had very good limited editions. Dark Souls might be my favorite limited edition released in Europe. Also well, a ton of other, non-japanese games had limited editions, but who cares about those?

Still, I need to import if I want a limited edition for Disgaea 4 or Neptune. And it took a long time to see anything comparable to WD's Lunar 2 EBC box (probably still my favorite limited edition to date).

It's likely my favourite AT3 song period.

I must honestly say, from comparing both, Kokia has the better singing voice, but Shikata uses her voice to wider effect. Both have very solid composing ability, with the difference being Kokia integrates instrumentation and singing as complements, while Shikata has a heavy emphasis on highly technical singing supplemented by instrumentation. Shikata's songs use very unconventional singing techniques to create unconventionally structured pieces, while Kokia uses her strong singing ability to create strong and relatively conventional pieces.

I get the exact same feeling from Mitose as well, Mitose in the place of Kokia.

Kokia relies a lot on her traditional, formal Opera training which is why her songs sound that way. From what I have of her discography, however, her range is rather limited. I think it's a blessing that she was brought in only for AT3 since I doubt that she'll be able to compose distinctive songs for more than one 'character'.

I'll have to agree as well that Shikata Akiko's forte is the fact that she has such a diverse range and mastery in composition and arrangement. The Orgel mini albums are testament to her arrangement skills since it's very easy to just swap the instruments with tinny glockenspiel samples but it's another matter entirely to give the impression of standing in the middle of a complex clockwork musical engine. The main commonality trait between her songs is the complex vocal track. And even still, she doesn't always employ it if it's not necessary.

Personally, I like Shimotsuki Haruka's singing voice over Kokia's when it comes to a 'clear' voice. Incidentally, the song that I use to introduce people to Shimotsuki Haruka is HISTORIA from the Radiant Historia soundtrack (composed by Shimomura Yoko [Legend of Mana, Kingdom Hearts series are some of her previous works]) which in itself is a very very good soundtrack and I highly recommend people in this thread to listen to it.

Just two things:
A) removing an account also prevents you from using(or deletes, I'm not sure) all content related to that account, so keep the account on the PS3.
B) PSP works a bit differently, since you can only have an account per PSP, and while you can copy stuff on a memory stick from any account, it will only let you play games if you are on the same account that originally had it.

I actually wonder how the VITA will be, since I plan to actually buy some PSP games for the VITA, but if I have to stick to one accont, I'd have to pick one (most probably the US one).

>Is that iPhone only?

Sadly yes.

Even if they made an android version, they would probably fuck up the region like they did with Barcode kanojo on android.

There are a lot of stupid moe/otaku apps:

-Meruru App
-Steins gate clock/Divergence meter app
-"Moe Calculator girl" app (she speaks the numbers you enter, and reads the answer out loud. And you can dress her up)
-A "moe custom playlist" app. I was torn between the S&M girl and the catgirl, but the catgirl won.
-Oreimo App (similar to meruru, only more tsundere). App is free, but kuroneko and extra outfits cost $1.99
-Touhou BA app (just an animated wallpaper)

Also I have two "Sleeping with girl" iphone apps. You can adjust her breathing/snoring and change her position, or rub her like you can all the other iphone app girls and hear her complain/squeak. She also works as an alarm clock where she gently wakes you up with "oniisan, it is time to get up...

tl;dr

Apple is winning the "pointless weeaboo app" race.

If you move your finger on the screen she follows along, and if you tap the screen she jumps to the side out of the way and complains.

If you touch the girl you get comments ranging from idle banter to angry "Where do you think you are touching" kinds of comments.

Then there are a dozen more more calendar based events, where she wishes you merry christmasu or gives you a valentine gift. Also you enter your birthday and on that day she has a special scene.

The Meruru app is way more laid back than the Oreimo one, and she doesn't really get mad or upset, even when you pet her too hard. And I don't have Yozura app or Kuroneko yet.

Sort of, but it's a total nonissue as long as you're playing with your brain instead of with the controller jammed up your ass. You have to do well on the required quests/classes or you're forced into remedial quests instead of getting to do character events, but nothing is hard at all to ace even without an FAQ. If you ace everything, you end up with more open time spots than there are character events to do.

It's my favorite RPG battle system. Uses (almost) the entire party with tiny SP pools, so there's a huge focus on switching party members in and out during combat to regen SP and HP as well as constant support attacks and defenses. All of which, including basic attacks and skills, evolve in both animation and usage as you go. For example, everyone starts out with a basic support attack, but as you upgrade it, some change to area, some become status effect, some provide buffs. Same with defensive supports. Character balance is awesome in MK1, but a couple broken as shit skills mess it up in MK2.
Wish they were a little harder harder, but that's what setting difficulty to Hard and then fighting at night for boosted enemy stats is for.

No clue to be honest.

It really depends on the details. If the acquisition is merely a "We want direct control over the profits but you remain autonomous" ala the old Tales Studios arrangement with NBG, then it could be a mere formality.

If it involved expanding the studio or changing operations, then yeah it could be a bad thing. The advantage GUST has is that it's very small; it does things cheaply so it can continue to offer niche or experiment with their formula without having to worry too much.

On a more positive note: surprisingly, my proxy'd package from the GUST store arrived today after less than a week.

For those who were wondering, the vocal score is actually printed on one of those plastic folders (you know, sheet sleeve kinda things) ... kinda not what I expected, but I guess I would have known better if my Japanese didn't suck. Either way, I think the score is rather pretty and I'll probably use it to print a real score scroll or something.

Note that the scan to the right sucks since the score is a bit larger than a normal sheet and doesn't fully fit into my scanner. I'll either have to find a bigger scanner or do some tiling / shopping to get an adequate scan; once that's done I'll upload the high-res version.

Saw this on 4gamer earlier and my first thought was Cocona. The game has some pilot customization, so maybe the artist will try to sneak in some AT lookalikes.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/12/vita-accounts/

>Sony associate brand marketing manager Crystal MacKenzie said that PlayStation Network accounts will be connected to the Vita’s proprietary memory cards, not the hardware itself. Though you will have to restore the Vita to its default factory settings in order to change the account on each memory card, you can use multiple cards to access multiple PSN accounts on a single Vita system.

>> No.8207796

>>8207738
oh wow. so they make it region free but if you wanna buy DLC for an import you have to juggle memory cards? not to mention you cant play the import on your main account with the DLC since you have to download it on your account bound memory card?

on one hand i wanna wait for the inevitable CFW to fix this sort of bullshit. but on the other hand im afraid they pull another PS3 and remove the PSP BC on the next hardware revision or some idiocy like that.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me, to be honest. They received so much backlash regarding what happened with the PS3 but still went ahead with it so it's actually quite possible to happen with the Vita too.

>> No.8210708

>>8210046
The best option then would be to buy early, since the first editions are generally the easiest to hack and that guarantees you backwards compatibility.
The hardest part would be sticking to your guns and not updating it until CFW comes out because that might take a while, and with bullshit like on-disc updates that prevents you from buying games legitimately from a certain point onwards.

By the way, what kind of disc support does the Vita use? Some new Sony support that will die at the speed of light since nothing else uses it? I'm really starting to wonder why doesn't every game company ever just switch to downloadable videogames. They could still sell redeemable codes in shops if they really wanted to keep that market alive. Even leaving PC apart, we all know that many PS3, and a vast majority of PSP games were released (some exclusively) like that. Would it be that troublesome to release all of them like that? I can only see the problem with games like, uh, MGS4 and FFXIII that are freaking huge. But if it's not read from a disc, you can probably cut corners here and there easily (and such huge games usually have installs anyway).

>> No.8211338

>>8211281
Vita doesn't use discs. It uses solid state memory similar in profile to SD cards and the specification reserves some space on the card for save data, patches etc... It has additional external memory card slot(s?) for other storage capacity for movies, PSN downloads and the like.

Backwards compatibility to PSP games is done strictly via a downloaded copy from the PSN store. And yes, you have to pay to download a copy to the Vita. There's a 'Vita Passport' programme where you register your disc games via your PSP onto your PSN account and you get a discount to buy it for the Vita.

only games
- that are on the PSN
- where the developer/publisher agrees to do this

...so probably like 10 games in the US store, if any

the costs for the Japanese store were from 500yen to 2000yen (i.e. $5 to $20)

Is Totori's and Rorona's soundtrack recorded digitally or acoustic? I'm listening to it right now and it seems so... eletronical even in the passages of woodwind and string instruments.
