and just to clarify on the benefits of a kanji captcha:
1. It would keep out raids from /b/ and /v/.
2. It would keep out the "can you translate this Japanese for me?" threads.
3. It would keep out some of the shitposts, like "why aren't you playing Train Simulator 2008 on Japanese servers?"
4. Most of the people on /jp/ who make quality posts already know much of their kanji, from playing VNs and the like.
5. A hiragana/katakana captcha would be useless, as they can easily be translated/converted by /b/tards, by software or via a conversion table. It would be more difficult to do this using Kanji.
6. It would keep out the /trv/, /lang/ or /int/ related threads, like "I'm going to nippon, where can I buy a kawaii bento box? <3 :3 xDD"
7. It already works on other English imageboards and Japanese BBSes to keep out spam. Practically all Chinese websites use a Chinese captcha to keep out spam as well, even though it's not quite the same as Kanji.

I'd suggest starting off with the 1,006 kyoiku kanji, the most basic kanji required for literacy, and the ones taught in primary school. Once /jp/ stabilises a bit, increase the number to the 1,945 toyo kanji. Wait a few months, then make it the 2,136 Joyo kanji officially used by the Japanese Ministry of Education. This should be enough for the purpose of keeping /jp/ clean; I don't think it's necessary to include the 861 Jinmeiyo kanji as well, as they aren't as commonly used.
